I've read a narrative on this board about the Ryan years blowing away the Edwards/Mangini years, and it lacks factual context.

Using six year blocks..........

Ryan (2009-2014) 45-50, 2 winning seasons, 2 playoff trips, 4 playoff wins, 0 AFCE titlesEdwards/Mangini (2003-2008) 43-53, 3 winning seasons, 2 playoff trips,1 playoff win, 0 AFCE titles
Parcells/Groh/Edwards (1997-2002) 56-40, 5 winning seasons, 3 playoff trips, 2 playoff wins, 2 AFCE titles

Here's a good read from a TOJ article from October 2014.

Another one from TOJ from December 2014.

I find it comical to read how Ryan was a scapegoat.

I find it comical that you bunch the Tuna,Groh and Edwards to get a winning record. Compare the QB's they had Vinny and Chad to what Rex had?? You weren't trying to be fair were you??LOL What did the Tuna do when Vinny went down in 1999?? I'll tell you the team started 1-6 before he gave Lucas a shot..

I didn't bunch anything. Everything was taken from TOJ. Qb's? Rex had the guy(according to his own book "Play Like You Mean It") that he told Tannenbaum they had to have(Sanchez). Did you read the links? If so, then yes, I do find it comical that Ryan is called a scapegoat. Under his watch, things fell apart and he was exposed. Once his great coaching staff started to move on, he was in over his head. Once his drafts started to take over the team, we declined.

Also, TOJ used six year blocks because that was Ryan's tenure here. It was trying to illustrate the two previous six year blocks the team had in comparison to Ryan's(whom we keep hearing had unheard of success). Once the previous regime's players faded/left, coaches left, Ryan was just a glorified DC without a clue how to run a team.

Ok then Rex's first 6 years was more successful that BB's first 6 years..LOL Look I understand everyone wants to crap on Rex etc I think Rex should have been gone when Tanny got canned.. But I did enjoy his time as the Jet HC.. I also agree that he has a lot to learn in order to be a complete HC.. I just get tired of the day in and day out Rex sucks threads. I'm very happy to have Mac and Bowles heading the team now and I'm looking forward to a great year..

The problem isn't that Rex sucks. He didn't suck.

But he never grew as a HC. He kept making the same mistakes over and over. He wasn't a great gameday coach. And while he got guys to want to play for him, those guys didn't want to put in the work during the week for him, and he never really made them. So you had teams that went 120 MPH on Sundays, but would go through the motions Tuesday-Saturday. And he never made them accountable.

He also was too reluctant to pull the plug on some guys, particularly at QB. He never acknowledged when a guy was just not getting the job done.

Overall, he was a great defensive schemer, a decent HC, but also a guy who will have players begin to slack off on him once he's at a place for too long. As soon as players see that they won't be held accountable, many will go through the motions except on gameday.

not a lot i can disagree with this post.. but anytime i read jet fans posting about rex's negatives as a head coach his two consecutive AFCCG's are either not metioned our heavily downed played..

i'm not old enough to have had the thrill of watching the jets win a superbowl.. so for me, 2009 & 20010 are my most cherished run as a life long jet fan & rex was the head coach.. flaws & all..

Were you old enough to remember the last four non winning seasons, culminating in our being "the best 4-12 team in football"'??

LOLz this is what I am talking about. Those two losses in Indy and Pittsburgh bought WRECKS four more years in which his quarterbacks and his offense became the laughing stock of football, his special teams and even his vaunted Dad's Defense got progressively worse each year

How many decades of failure should two losses in Conference Championship games buy?

Not even close

Bowles adapts his defense to the talent and abilities of his players. WRECKS only has ONE defense, his dad's 1980s model and player have to be rigidly squeezed in whether it fits them or not.

Thankfully, the players he has screwed up by doing this...Coples, Allen, Pryor and a few others are still young and Bowles will probably be able to rehabilitate them an get them to reach their potential

Good heavens, Rex is neither the worst nor the best. Can't we just all acknowledge that it's not nearly as black-and-white as it's being made out to be?

QFT.. Marvin Lewis has been the Bengals HC for 13 years and has never won a playoff game.. And he has had some Pro Bowl QB's..Hell from 1986-1989 Don Shula went 4 years with no playoffs just 1 winning season 8-7 (Strike year missed 1 game)with Marino as his QB..

Funny how the media perception is everything. I always thought Marvin Lewis was a good coach. 13 years with no playoffs? GTFO

As long as we agree that Rex should have been shit canned probably after the 2012 debacle when Tanny was sent packing, we are in full and complete agreement

As for the Bills, their fans will have plenty of questions to ask after Rex takes Marrone's 9 win season and runs it into the ground
