Rex Ryan (sort of) admits he made mistakes with Jets

Rex may be the least cerebral coach I have ever seen.

Which may explain some of his popularity.

Rex was the perfect coach for the team he took over at that particular time.
The problem is that his schtick was going to eventually wear off, and when that happens and the team stops drinking the kook aid, things go south fast.

Add on a clueless GM in Idzik, and a terrible QB situation and it just adds fuel to the fire. I actually expect him to have a big impact on the Bills this season, because he is exactly what they need right now. A firecracker to inspire the troops after a HC in Marrone who used methods similar to Mangini.

Rex inspires players at the outset and they will play for him. The question is how long Rex's shelf life is. I give him 4 years in Buffalo without making a run. If he guides them to the playoffs, you can bet that a team as starved for the postseason as Buffalo, won't kick him to the curb very fast.

There is truth to this. He does come in as a breath of fresh air, believing in his guys. He's especially good at following a more disciplinarian, or a more distant HC.

But you are absolutely right about his shelf life. Players eventually figure out that although they may play hard on Sundays, they don't have to work hard the rest of the week. There is no accountability, and unless you have a room of self-motivated guys who don't need the motivation, players start to get lazy.

My suspicion is that he may start out hotter in Buffalo, because he is stepping into such a good situation (minus the QB), but his shelf life will be even shorter. He is a known commodity, and some Bills players, watching what he did with their division rivals, will begin to coast even earlier than they did here.

so rex throws a hissy fit when amaro was critical of him. rex's defenders here blast the kid for "throwing rex under the bus"

now rex turns around and blames idzik for all the issues on the team (and yes, idzik deserves a lot of the blame...as does REX).

does rex realize what a hypocrite this makes him out to be? how about the rex-groupies here, who blasted amaro for doing what rex has just done to idzik?

i was always a fan of rex and really hoped he was gonna be our long-term, successful solution as a coach leading us to a title(s). but it's about time he STFU and concentrate on his own team and stop acting like a jilted lover. he shares plenty of the blame for his down-fall with the jets.

That is a great point about Amaro. I had not even considered it. But Rex most definitely comes across as a hypocrite in all this.

The blaming Idzik thing goes too far. Idzik did address the CB position using a first and a third in two consecutive drafts, but both got injured in TC. Idzik had a lot of issues in drafting, but his philosophy was sound and he did try to address the issues but was not really able to do it. We are better off without him.

But blowhard Rex did not adjust really at all to his circumstances. He still blitzed like 100% of the time seemingly on 3rd and long. He put cornerbacks on an island, where an actual competent defensive coach would have adjusted to his personnel, playing more zone and cloud coverage schemes, possibly moving to 4 man front. No Rex stayed the course and went down in a blaze of infamy.

Thankfully he failed so spectacularly that Woody was forced to adjust his entire concept of how to build a team and, though it remains to be seen, I really like the direction we have taken in the FO, scouting, HC and coaching staff. All are football people through and through, and all are very flexible.

But Rex solution is to get even more defiant and stubborn, while making sure to continue to blame everyone but himself for his downfall. He just ran out of scapegoats. Now he seems to have carte blanche in Buffalo and the train wreck he will create in a short period of time should be epic.

Rex is a bottom 5 HC in the NFL, but we should be grateful to him in a little way that he got our owner to to finally see the light and understand that he runs a football team not some political corporate entity.

Exactly nothing more needs to be said perfect

Looks like he's blaming Idzik. Rightfully so....

Idzik didn't have a say in the 2009/2010 drafts which started our rapid decline. Rex was the most powerful voice in the room then. Idzik didn't run up to Tannenbaum's office clamoring for Santonio Holmes. Idzik also didn't push for Mason to be brought in 2011 which caused Cothchery to ask for a trade/release. The decline of this team(unlike Ryan's revisionist history and lack of accountability) actually started the year he arrived.

It really did he took a good roster and made it shit and it slowly declined each year because he didn't know how to evaluate players.

he is great xo defensive coach that is it, but he doesn't know what it takes to be a hc and he certainly does not know how to evaluate talent or was ever a scout.

like I keep saying rex is so arrogant if he had a team of ball boys he would still boast how his defense would be top 5.

I was surprised when the Bills hired him because I didn't think they needed a defensive coach. We will see this season if Rex's scheme is a better fit and use of personnel than former DC Schwartz and his 4-3 wide 9..I thought it was perfect for both Williams/Hughes on the end and Dareus/Williams inside.

Yeah, the Bills were 4th overall in defense last season. How much more of a difference will Ryan make? Also, while their cb's are good, IMO, they are not at the level of our 2009/2010 teams, so if Ryan plays a lot of cover zero............

The issue with Rex is, where does the bluster end and the actual analysis begin? Who knows what he actually thinks about any of his players or coaches? At first, it seems like he's confident in his players, and they like that, but over time it becomes clear that HE WILL TALK UP ANY PLAYER, NO MATTER HOW GOOD OR BAD THEY ARE, AS LONG AS THEY ARE ON HIS TEAM. Suddenly, it means jack shit when he says how good you are. Effusive praise delivered indiscriminately has a numbing effect. Rex comes in and says "this guy can be a pro bowler," and it means NOTHING, because he would say that about anyone.

So the question then becomes, what are his real feelings about his players and coaches? If he really believes the things he says, he is delusional, and if he doesn't, then he's full of crap, essentially.

Between what you posted and what I read in Collision Low Crossers, I had enough of Ryan. He just seemed to become more entertainer than coach.

Agreed. And I generally did find him entertaining. But as it became clear that he had little involvement with the offense, or even knowledge of what was going on around the team (Santonio Holmes incident really was a turning point), and didn't have the ability to adapt to changing circumstances, the act started to wear thin. When, finally, last year the defense also wasn't any good, it became time to move on for me. It isn't to say that he doesn't have ability or do some things well, just that his deficiencies in certain key areas were too great to ignore. It never felt like he was moving the team forward after that second season.

So Rex Ryan, speaking to reporters at a charity softball event at Yankee Stadium, just matter-of-factky stated Bills will make playoffs.

Much credit to Rex the person for driving six hours for a charity event for True Blue, NYPD. He's a great guy.

Back to predicting the playoffs and talking up every player he has. He's a mediocre coach with serious flaws.

I'd love to be friends with the guy, but I don't want him coaching my favorite team.

He definitely has some issues. I mean he's probably the only coach out there that can't not answer that question.

I bet you Bowles gets asked that everyday but refuses to answer. Don't understand why Rex can't shut up!

No way..blaming Idzik is not right

.blaming someone else is a cowards move....if you want to blame him..go and say the GM and state your case..if not shut up...he had a lot of good qualities..but a lot of also destructive qualities to a team also...,,un deserved loyalty, no offensive accountability, time management problems up the ass, too much "rah rah" baiting of other teams.....RYAN wrote too many checks for his team to cash and not him....don't care about tattoos, running w the bulls, going to his kids game on an off day......we are better off w o him....and maybe he has learned..but REX is basically a coward....and does not take accountability and thinks his "cuteness " and name makes up for it
You are slightly uninformed. Idzik was terrible and Ryan was being a team player, he publicly stated that idzik had a great draft both years. What Ruan regrets is not stepping up and telling woody they can't win. He kept a positive attitude and was a good soldier.
