Latest Update on Mo Wilkerson: I don’t have anything to prove to “those people upstairs"

I don't believe there's any hidden agendas here. Mo has a mild hammy injury, and Bowles is right in waiting it out longer than usual due to the other line issues (Talley hurt, Sheldon's suspension). Why rush Wilkerson back now? Why risk him making the injury worse when we have three preseason games left? He'll be close to 100% if not 100% by Sept 13th.

Nothing to see here.

I get a kick out of all the "blame" that no new long term Wilkerson contract is signed yet ...on the JETS front office /ownership ... I see it differently .... right now ....his agents are probably the biggest cause of delays, as is the "bad advice" I believe he is getting. The Jets front office are playing with a finite salary number, a ceiling set by like signings, creative ways to spread that across a number of seasons and the need to cover about 55-60 other contracts ... His agents seem to be taking the "opera singer" approach to negotiations ..... "mi mi mi me". Maybe its time to start ripping his agents, as part of this discussion.

I was pretty confused who this post was pointed at. It appears to be me based on the quotes...but reading my post, below, I dont see blame pointed at either side. It just seems negotiations are very slow and it is hard to believe there has been much progress with no updates in 3 weeks...but again, that could mean something gets done tomorrow.

"It's been 3 weeks...starting to think the lingering health issues are playing a part in negotiations. The guy is going to be hurt all year, comes with turf toe and hamstring injuries. Jets are in a bind right now it seems on this deal. Hopefully me posting this gets the deal done today.

is anyone concerned about signing him long term with these two injuries plaguing him? Id still like him locked up. But Im not sure we'll see him at 100% this season, and once we get to 8 losses, if we do, we likely need to shut him down for the remainder of the season and hope he gets to next year's camp at 100%. At the 8 loss mark, we should have Sheldon back by then anyway...fingers crossed...."

With Mo's self imposed deadline only a few days away I am kind of surprised on how quiet the media is regarding his new contract.
I am even more so getting worried about it happening at all. The team has stated many times about how they want Mo to stick around, but still no contract.
One of my favorite players and hope he stays but I have a feeling that if its not done by Sunday, he may be wearing another color jersey in the near future.

No time soon, we can tag Mo next season if we have to.

Any rumblings over there regarding big Mo's contract?

I'd read that of he doesn't get it sorted before Sunday, then he'll wait till season end!

What is everyone's thoughts on the situation?

I think the Jets will wait. They might even franchise him next year. I don't think they are in a hurry to get this done. Although I wish they would. He is a good Jet and we need to reward those types of players.

Mo is a very good player no doubt, but he is NOT Suh or Watt good, and his agent thinks he is. We sort of have Mo by the short hairs for the next two seasons.

tangentially related:

Bills signed NT Marcell Dareus to six-year, $108 million extension through 2021.

The deal includes $60 million in guaranteed, which is just slightly more than Ndamukong Suh received from the Dolphins this offseason. It is a massive investment in a player who is suspended the first game of the season for a substance-abuse policy violation, but Dareus is simply too talented for the Bills to let go. With Mario Williams and Jerry Hughes also on big deals, the Bills have a lot of money invested in their front seven.

IMO Buffalo over paid for Dareus NT, and they are headed to cap Hell next season. I think we are doing the right thing waiting on Mo & his agent to "cave" before doing the deal.

Dramatically....... No Mo is not Suh, or Watt good, but IMO, he is certainly more valuable to the team then Dareus. IMO, Snacks is more valuable then Dareus.

Jets are going to have to decide where to put their money. Snacks is a FA next season. Anyone who isn't worried about Richardson's future, is either under informed, or lying

Mo Wilkerson: I don’t have anything to prove to “those people upstairs”

Mo Wilkerson: I don’t have anything to prove to “those people upstairs”

Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson got his 2015 season off to a good start with five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble against the Browns in a 31-10 Jets win.

Performances like that have made Wilkerson one of the top players in the league at his position, but they haven’t been enough to get the long-term contract he was seeking this offseason. Wilkerson’s camp and the team aren’t expected to continue discussing a deal during the season, which will push any future talks to an offseason that could see Wilkerson get the franchise tag,

Wilkerson says he believes he’s “one of the best defensive ends” in the NFL and that he’ll be focused on remaining in that group rather than on worrying about whether Jets brass will make him the offer he’s looking for.

“I’m a competitor, but I’m not going to compete with those people upstairs,” Wilkerson said to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. “If they feel I’m worthy or not worthy, whatever the case may be, that’s on them. I know what I’m capable of doing. … I’m not here to make a point about anything. If they think … I don’t know, I really can’t say how they feel about me. You have to talk to them. I just do my job and dominate as best I can.”

Continuing to put up performances like the one he had in the opener obviously won’t hurt Wilkerson’s chances of scoring a long-term deal, but, as we’ve seen countless times before, the presence of the franchise tag limits the urgency to get a deal done before the end of the final year of a player’s contract. Avoiding the tag and the protracted dance that can follow would be preferable, but it would be quite a surprise to see Wilkerson with anyone but the Jets when all is said and done.

He must be asking too much money???? That's all I can come up with as the reason he hasn't been signed yet? He's a very good player and it just doesn't make any sense that the Jets haven't signed him long term yet. So there has to be a reason why it hasn't happened yet?

Mo is NOT worth JJ Watt money. Not even close. If Watt is getting 16 million per season, Mo is worth approximately 8 to 10 million per season. This has to be the reason why? Otherwise, the Jets front office are a bunch of idiots and I do not believe they are.

It's pretty simple, mo wants more than the Jets want to give. A lot of reports claim the biggest problem is the guaranteed money.
The Jets shouldn't be in a rush, they have 2 full seasons of control over him, if no want the stability and insurance of a long term deal, he does not have leverage. He makes 7 mill this year and roughly 16 next year, if franchised. That's equal to a 23 million 2 year deal for the Jets at 11.5 per year average. If mo gets injured he gets screwed on a future contact. The Jets have the leverage for 2 seasons. If they want a suh type contract, they could have signed suh. They didn't.
This front office isn't going to submarine our cap on our deepest position.

My prediction is that mo plays out the year, gets tagged next year then immediately negotiates a 6 year $80m deal.

of course money is the reason. mo wants more than the jets want to pay. that seems obvious.

as to mo being worth $8-10MM, i think that is very low. especially in light of the contracts signed by darius and cameron jordan recently . jordan got 5-years, $55 mil
