Signing Matthis would give us a really good OL

LT- D. Ferguson
LG- E. Matthis
C - N.Mangold
RG- J. Carpenter
RT- B. Giacomini

As far as Cap Space ... all they have to do is rework Ferguson's contract.

Mathis is better than anything we've got at RG right now. Colon is a mental mistake waiting to happen, Winters is way too inconsistent, Harrison has to decide if he loves football, and probably won't be ready until 2016, and Aboushi is still an unknown.

Bring Mathis in. Geno Smith and the running game will thank you, Macc. He's a two year plug-in-and-play.

Did Aboushy retire or pass away?

And he graded out positively in all areas last year. Go with our young player and spend the cash elsewhere. Rather replace right tackle

Agreed on both improves run game and pass game but likely is only a 2 year solution

Do we really feel confident handing the starting RG position to Oday? I'm not saying he hasn't looked serviceable in the short time he's been here. But Mathis has been rated among the best in recent years. I would call that a significant two year upgrade to the interior line, with Aboushi and Dozier providing young promising depth. If Mathis fits the type of player that Gailey wants at the position, I say do it.

Mathis is 34, expensive and done

Aboushy started effectively at LG last season,.should improve as a second year player and is inexpensive

Don't see the need to kick him out the door for an expensive and probably broken trinket

That was my initial reaction too...... need to check scheme fit, salary demands, and health..... but, on paper, it does look promising.

Agreed!!! Kendall was one of my favorite Jet Lineman even with his brief tenure. Who cares if he is a two year solution? That's two years of locking up one of the best left sides to an OL in the league.

Brick & Thor always play better when they don't have to compensate for the LG being a weak link...sign him up!

The Jets have $4.94M in cap space. As much as he'd help, former Eagles G Evan Mathis could be a tight squeeze. #nyj

So are we still glad with how Macc handled the offseason?

I don't mean specific moves, but rather his spending frenzy that has left little in the coffers in early June?

Part of me wonders if he made a "rookie mistake", but I won't pretend to understand the intricacies of being an NFL GM . . .

there may be one or two deals you can question, but that's with the benefit of hindsight. while it's not unprecedented, it's not often a pro bowl caliber guard gets cut in the middle of the summer.

i can see some criticisms of using space that may be needed to sign mo. but it's hard to criticize what has widely been lauded as an excellent off-season because they may not have enough money to go after mathis.

Plus Mo's already counting about $7 mil on this years' cap. Extending him has no bearing on our current cap space. For Mathis..... it depends what he's asking for and the market that develops. A number of those veteran defensive lineman that were signed to one year deals for competition purposes this offseason won't be making the team. That will free up more space. Babin might not make it either if Mauldin continues to develop.

That's where my ignorance kicks in. I don't know how to differentiate between "we have $4.9 million" and the actual money that is potentially at our disposal.

Personally I want the guy -- there's NO better way to help Geno out than put a strong line in front of him.

If we don't get him, I hope it's because we chose not to pursue him, and not because we backed ourselves into a corner where we couldn't . . .

IMO, if we want him, the cap is absolutely not an issue. Easily able to free cash.

well if we sign him, it's likely bye bye willie colon (saves $600k). jason babin is likely on the endangered species list ($1.5MM savings). devier posey has a $750K cap hit. there are a bunch of other guys who can be cut, although you obviously need to fill a roster, so the savings of cutting a vet and replacing him with a rookie or 2nd year player probably saves you $200K per player.
