Evan Mathis to Jets talk

He won't take the deal. Perhaps in another couple of weeks he will. But right now he is playing the waiting game for his last big paycheck

Another couple weeks? Maybe by month end if he gets through the preseason and is heading into week 1 without having signed...I think he would consider a 2 year deal with a player option for year 2.

However, it wont be for the jets. The Jets only have 5.46 mill in cap space this year, and they need room to sign players off team's practice squads and have roster flexibility throughout the season.

Evans isn't taking less than $5.5..that's what he left on the table. So he's not signing here for less...especially when he walked away from a 10 win team at 5.5 mill...why would be sign with a 4 win team for 5.4? He wont.

He will only if he has no other option. $5.4 is better than nothing. Blunders have happened before where people over estimate the market.

Maybe not similar but somewhat related is, Doug Marrone. He quit his head coaching gig and got stuck as an assistant.

We can probably do this , by cutting a veteran who is losing a step. Pace?

His current net worth is 40 mill and he'll be 34 in November (and he resides in Alabama of all places, he can probably make $40 mill go a long way there)...if he doesn't get what he's looking for he's probably just as likely to sail off into the sunset.

With the opening of another 4 year cap window next year, the 5.5 million really doesn't mean much. if they want to they can move money around and create cap space, which they are going to have to do next year any how.

I don't think the problem is is this year's salary, they don't want to give him more then a one year deal. I could see them giving him a 2 or 3 year deal with a team option for year 2-3. That is the way Jackie Davidson has structured most of the contracts, sans Revis and Harris.

What about a player option 2nd year with a team option for a 3rd?

Don't we have extra money from Richardson 4 game suspension? Plus any pending further games suspended?
Plus cutting someone to make room would clear space.

Plus we have cuts coming. Probably 1 or 2 at lb.

Yup, we get credit for his pro-rated base salary this season and prorated signing bonus against next season cap. 4 game suspension will save us $310K this season and $335K next season according to Jason at Over The Cap.

Also, remember that only the top 51 count against the cap during pre-season. So the $5 million cap space only takes 51 players into account. With Practice squad and 53 man roster, we will need to fit 63 under the cap by Sept 1. Not saying that Mathis cannot be fit in, but it won't be easy.

As much as I would to have a guy as talented as Mathis with the Jets, I do not think that long term this would be a wise decision. Mathis wants big bucks. If we break the bank and cut a bunch of players just to add Mathis, it would send the wrong message to many others including Mo who has been waiting patiently to get paid.

I also do not believe Mike MacCagnan would be that crazy. So unless Mathis drastically reduced his asking price, the Jets should not want any part of adding him.

Macc has been cool-headed and smart so far (and so has Coach Bowles). I don't see them doing anything impulsive.
If they can get it done where it looks like a sweet deal, maybe it will happen. But the numbers don't look too promising.

Jets will/should offer a 6MM one year contract. He would be a nice fit.

To my knowledge, the Jets only have 5.2 million left under the cap. They also need an in season reserve of at least a couple million. 6 million would never work. They would have to cut players to afford that and it would send the wrong message to established and proven players deserving of a raise like Mo Wilkerson.

Dolphins VP Mike Tannenbaum won’t say no to Evan Mathis pursuit

Because of their glaring need at the position, and their willingness to write the big checks for name players, the Dolphins are going to be linked with veteran guard Evan Mathis until he signs somewhere.

And Dolphins vice president Mike Tannenbaum did little to quiet that talk Tuesday, saying on WQAM that it was still a possibility.

Asked about making a run at the former Eagles Pro Bowler, Tannenbaum replied: “We’ll have to continue to get better, we’ll see where our guard situation goes.

“I’ll never rule out getting this team better,” he said, via the Palm Beach Post.

Tannenbaum said nice things about other players, specifically Dallas Thomas, but the Dolphins could clearly use an upgrade.

The Jets have also inquired, but don’t seem to like the price. But that also doesn’t hurt any potential bargaining position with an AFC East rival, either.

absence of news here could mean that no one is running after him - if he will take reasonable $, jets need to consider.

Dolphins are on him as well

The dirt why Evan Mathis is not a Miami Dolphin
When Evan Mathis was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles months ago, the first team to show interest in signing him was the Miami Dolphins.

That and the fact Mathis is the nephew of former Dolphins Pro Bowl nose tackle Bob Baumhower, who has lobbied the team (lightly) to sign his kin, the fact people close to owner Stephen Ross have advocated signing Mathis, and the fact Mathis is a more than solid player at a position the Dolphins have uncertainty has led to speculation that, you know, Mathis is bound for Miami.

But as of early this afternoon, Mathis is not headed for Miami. He is indeed unsure where he's going to play in 2015.

Why?

Well, this is the NFL. And the NFL is often driven by two factors: Money. And deadlines or desperation.

And the Mathis camp and Dolphins are far apart on the money issue while neither side feels any significant desperation or feels close to any looming deadline to do a deal.

When the Dolphins initially called Mathis (actually his agent Drew Rosenhaus) sources tell me the two spoke of parameters of where they would like to be in getting a deal signed.

The Dolphins were willing to do a deal similar to what they did a year ago with guard Daryn Colledge and center Samson Satele. In other words, the Dolphins are willing to pay an older stopgap player around $2-$3 million per season in a deal that doesn't tie them up for a second season although it might be a two-year deal.

Mathis, who was scheduled to earn $5.5 million from the Eagles in 2015, wants a deal that at least makes him back that money he was expecting. He wants to feel whole again.

And as the Dolphins are comfortable -- for now -- with the work rookie Jamil Douglas and third-year player Dallas Thomas have done in camp, they're not likely to move significantly right away. It would require one or both those players fading in camp or performing poorly in the preseason for the Dolphins to rethink their stance.

Mathis, meanwhile, is playing a waiting game. If any of 32 teams suffers a significant injury at guard or the performance of the guards teams have in camp collapse, then he becomes a likely signing closer to his desired contract number.

And while Mathis might give the Dolphins the courtesy of having them match whatever good deal he can get elsewhere, he is not waiting on Miami. Obviously, the Dolphins are holding Mathis off, knowing all this.

So that's where things are. A wide gulf exists. There are no exigent circumstances for either party to force one or the other to cave and do this now.

Give it time.

It just doesn't make sense to bring him in if you ask me. He isn't the missing piece. He's we have some question marks at G but we have drafted a few guys to develop for a couple years now. I trust one will work out in the end.

I think one lesson to be learned here for a few of the jumpy Jets fans - Mathis is soon to be 34 and is still playing at a high level and will sooner or later get decent money. Keep this in mind when you all are screaming about finding replacements for aging Brick/Mangold since last year.

Linemen play well into their 30's if healthy which Brick and Mangold are extremely healthy.

IMHO, Mathis when its all said and done will be a NY Jet. His asking price will go down significantly and will be humbled. He should have stayed in PHilly because i doubt any one will give a mid 30 year old O-Lineman more than that.

Unless the guy wants to retire and makes this an excuse to step away.
