Kenrick Ellis: I Enjoyed My Time With Jets, But Giants Operate At An Entirely Different Leve

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — As far as Kenrick Ellis is concerned, the grass is definitely greener in Giants’ blue.
The former reserve defensive lineman for the Jets spoke candidly recently with the New York Post, revealing some subtle and not-so-subtle difference between the two franchises.

Ellis signed a one-year, $1.65 million deal with the Giants during the offseason after spending his first four NFL seasons with the Jets. He said he doesn’t want people to think his time with the Jets wasn’t enjoyable; it’s just that the Giants are the better organization.

Ellis, who was selected in the third round of the 2011 draft out of Hampton, cited Big Blue’s quarterback situation, coaching and attention to detail as far superior to what the Jets had to offer.

During Ellis’ tenure, the Jets’ QB situation was always rife with controversy as he witnessed the demise of Mark Sanchez, the birth of enigmatic Geno Smith and the fiasco that was the Tim Tebow experience.

“It’s a different feeling, man,’’ Ellis said Wednesday following minicamp practice. “I notice in practice having a franchise quarterback of Eli Manning’s caliber is a lot different in practice than when I was with the Jets. Those guys are good quarterbacks, but having a franchise, Super Bowl-winning quarterback, practice is a lot different. The feel of it is a lot different. The way it’s run is different, and it’s a beautiful thing. I really like it.’’

As far as the men on the sideline go, Ellis said he has nothing but “love” for former Jets head coach Rex Ryan, but is basically in awe of the Giants’ Tom Coughlin, the owner of two championship rings.

“It’s a lot different,’’ Ellis said. “Coach Coughlin is a military guy, really, really disciplined. Rex was disciplined as well, but it’s just a little different. You walk in the building, you’ll see coach Coughlin anywhere. He’s so sneaky, man, you’ll see him anywhere. It forces you to be on point as far as your demeanor, how you act, everything in the building, it’s real professional.”

Expected to battle at least three other players for a starting tackle spot, a position in which the Giants need immediate impact considering their inability to stop the run last season, Ellis said he’s not worried about his focus because accountability is something Coughlin and his staff preach.

“The structure here is a lot more intense. You have your schedule, you have to be where you’re supposed to be. They did that too with the Jets, be where you’re supposed to be, on time, but here it’s not regular time, it’s coach Coughlin’s time, which is five minutes early,” Ellis said. “It was an easy adjustment. You just have to move your clock. I don’t see why people make a big deal, it’s just being accountable for your actions, and I respect that.’’

he's probably right...he only knows the jets under Rex, Mike T, and idzik.

But he's talking about those jets teams, not this one.

Plus that "different level" was 6-10 instead of our 4-12...wouldn't brag too much about the difference.

I forgot how great Eli was last year.

Well, Sirius called the Giants the best WR core in the NFL last week because Cruz comes back to join Beckham. All I could do was shake my head.

If you want to watch a sick WR core next year...watch the packers. Nelson, Cobb, and Adams are going to be awesome. Their QB is pretty good.

The next best WR group that will be exceptional - Hilton, Andre Johnson, Moncreif, Dorsett....

Finally, rounding out 3 WR cores clearly better than the Giants - Demyrius Thomas, Latimer, and Emmanuel Sanders will be damn good.

Id take all 3 over the Giants...but Giant nation, like the Cowboys and Steelers fans, is too big a network for a fanboy that works on the radio to be wrong...

i'm not sure i'd disagree with anything he said.

eli is a better QB than anything the jets had the last 3 years.

and coughlin is a 2-time SB winning coach who runs a much tighter ship than rex did with the jets.

of course, as others pointed out and as is obvious, rex isn't here anymore. so that's the past.

as to which team will be better this year, that remains to be seen. giants got a lot of work to do to fix their defense and patch up their o-line. the jets obviously have our own question marks, most notably at the QB position.

He's commenting on the discipline and professional sharpness he's experiencing now? It is quite different from what he was used to. If he was still on the Jets, he would be thinking (if not saying to the press) the same thing.

I doubt if there was any other team with such a loose atmosphere and lack of accountability as the Jets had the last few years.

And now Rex is bringing his magic to Buffalo.

Rex is still running on the fumes of those first 2 years: one game away from the big show each time. But we here know it was a team he inherited.

If he leaves Buffalo in the same condition as he left the Jets, his reputation will be shot, and his career as a head coach likely over.

+1 You beat me to the punch BS. I am getting a little concerned about our NT position, with Ellis gone, and Snacks announcing that he's the best NT in the NFL ? How are we going to sign our DL ? Big Mo is waiting or traded, Coples is due next year & Richardson who's going to be the toughest to re-sign in 2 years, then Williams ? We can't afford a franchise QB with all the #1 picks on our DL.

Go Jets...Cyborg

Let's talk to him at the end of March next year when his one year contract is up .... and see if all his views are the same.

LOLz or lets not..

excellent point though..

mine is ellis got sucked into an article that was all about sensationalism..

if he said "golly gee i love both organisations" this isn't a thread & the beat writer would have had to "earn" a day's pay like most of us..

Odell Beckham is the best WR in football

If he plays like he did last year. Nothing against Beckham, but lets he him do it again. I don't like to call anyone the best or the worst based on 1 season.

I thought the same thing. Ellis can't compare the two organizations, because he has no experience in the Mac/Bowles regime. It is apparent that Bowles runs a totally different ship than Rex did.

Well stated 55. Kenrick sees the difference between professionalism and a complete free for all that was certainly under Rex.

I'am sure Coughlin wouldnt stand for:

*A QB missing a meeting, especially in an away game

*A RG that constantly get penalized

*No captains on the team to demontrate leadership

*Chaos was acceptable

That was the old regime. Woody saw that after the 1st two seasons with Rex, the majority of the Mangini players and mindset started to change and became VERY VERY laxed. The culture turning into as we all knew, a "Circus". Yet he held onto Rex because of all the publicity and headlines he received. IMHO, this made Woody think the Jets were relevant in this town. Though, for all the wrong reasons.

The Giants, The Steelers, The Patriots, The Seahawks, The Broncos & The Packers operate in such a fashion that as of a well oiled machine. Working from the inside out, from Scouts all the way up to assiatant coaches.
That is the mold that the Jets are following. Hopefully in a couple of years, we also will be mentioned with these elite teams.

I for one have no issue what Kenrick stated. The Jets are IMHO redirectioning themselves onto the right path with the high esteemed individual they have brought to change the philosophy within this franchise with Mike Maccagnan & Todd Bowles.

For those who still want a circus, there are Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey and Buffalo
