Rating the Jets Head Coahes

I've followed the Jets from the 1968 season so I thought I would rate the Head Coaches as I saw it.

Ewbank won a Super Bowl, but he was also the GM, and he made some awful personnel moves that too quickly dismantled a Super Bowl team in '68 and a division winner in '69. If you want to flip Ewbank and Parcells I understand. Parcells did a great job taking over a team that finished 1-15 in '96 and almost got them to the playoffs in '97 and then to the Championship Game in '98 I also believe Parcells did a fantastic job in '99 getting the Jets to 8-8, including winning the final 4 games, without a QB. I ranked Michaels ahead of Ryan because Michaels took over an awful team in '77 and in an era of no Free Agency he patently built a young team from the ground up and got them to the 1982 AFC Championship Game. Unfortunately he was fired after the '82 season for non-football reasons. To me this was the turning point in the history of the Jets going from Michaels to Walton and finishing 7-9 in 1983.

the list is absolutely brutal after #5 ..

even carroll with all of his success in college & the pros was awful for us..

mangini had some moments though & left ryan with solid talent..

You would be wrong. Rex is gone , and the anger and hate need to leave some Jet fans. He had two great runs where we were 1 game away. Then things went bad, some his fault , some the front office. But off his record, it's foolish to think Groh was better. Let's at least be honest

If I were grading, Groh & Carroll get grades of "incomplete." Ryan had two nice playoff runs, and his personality put the Jets back on the map.

I agree it was time for him to go, and I love Bowles professionalism, but it's ranked on overall results, and Rex does deserve some credit for two deep playoff runs. It's my own subjective ranking, I know not everyone would rank the same way, but I just thought it was a fun topic.

Ryan left better talent then Mangini did and at least Bowles is getting Geno in year 3.. As much as people liked Walt(And I did also) He had 2 winning years in 6 seasons and 1 was a strike shortened one..

And mangini had Favre, that's a step drop off to Sanchez. And Sanchez, "who wasn't groomed properly" managed to be 2 minutes away from playing the saints in the super bowl.

Not sure where you are getting this 2 minutes away stuff. Colts took the lead in the 3rd quarter and dominated the entire 2nd half of the 09 game. Outscored us 24-0 over the final 32 minutes of the game.

Correction within 2 quarters. And if you remember we frustrated Manning in the first half, second half he does what he does and figured out a weakness, and went on an epic tear. In the 4th or d was absolutely gassed.

Yup, I remember it well. My son and I were in the stands at Lucas Oil Field that evening. We went up 11 with just over 2 minutes left in the half, Manning seemed to figure our our defense. Led a late scoring drive to cut it to 4. We got the ball first in the 2nd half and Shonn Greene who was having a great playoff run went down to injury and we couldn't run the ball the rest of the way. Couldn't stop Peyton either. Long 2nd half followed by an even longer drive home. Yes, I remember it very well.

Walt took over perhaps the worst team in the league, and with no quick fixes, such as Free Agency, he patiently built a solid team. While you are right , he had only 2 winning seasons, it was his last two. Had he been able to continue to be the HC, the history of the Jets franchise may have been different.

No doubt, it was his personal issues that got him fired. Though he did a nice job with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL before they folded in 1986.

And then he beat Manning in his home stadium the following season in the divisional round. So what is your point?

Classic revisionist history from a guy willing to say anything because he's still angry about Rex Ryan not getting us to the big game.

Here are the facts of that game...

The Jets started off well against them for about 1 and a 1/2 quarters of football. After that, Manning figured out our blitzing schemes and the game was no longer in doubt.

Rex learned that day that blitzing Manning was the wrong approach with him.

Fast forward to next season, and he takes down Manning and the Colts in their home stadium using a non blitzing less confrontational approach. Took Manning completely out of his game and the Colts offense was reduced to a mere 16 points in a playoff game.

But you couldn't just tell it like it is, could you? You're still needing someone to blame for the last few seasons, ugh?

The fact of the matter is Rex is one of the very best coaches this organization has ever had in their otherwise pathetic, sh*tty history.

The first year we lost to the Colts, Greene getting injured was huge. We still had a lead early in the 3rd quarter and Greene had gotten 14 yards on 2 carries. Once he got hurt we couldn't run any more. By the point in the season, Jones was shot.
