If You Could Change 1 Play in Jets History...

What would it be?

NFL Live did a segment yesterday on changing 1 play in Colts history. It’s the offseason, not much happening, so I thought this could be a fun discussion.

A couple of plays come to mind, but there is no clear cut, obvious choice.

- AJ Duhe interception in the 82 Championship Game
- Muffed kickoff against Broncos in 98 (or any of the other half dozen turnovers in that game)
- Either of Doug Brien’s 2 misses in the Divisional Game against Pitt
- Sanchez strip-sack in the last two minutes of the first half against Pitt in the 2010 AFCCG game

But the play that sticks out to me is a little more obscure. Opening drive of the 2010 Championship game. After a delay of game penalty, Pitt has 3rd and 7 at around their own 35. Roethlisberger throws incomplete to Emmanuel Sanders. Looks like we have a 3 and out, until a flag is thrown. That is the play I want back. Was a questionable illegal use of hands penalty against Cro.

Instead of a 3 & out and a Pitt punt, they run the ball down our throats for a 9+ minute opening TD drive. Defense was gassed and we were playing catch up the rest of the game and never quite recovered. The strip sack was a big play, but we were already down 17 and in trouble at that point. If that flag is not thrown, I love our chances to win the game.

Maybe that one sticks in my mind because I had so much invested in that game. 8 hour drive from Chicago to Pitt, ridiculous amount of $$ spent on two tickets, sitting in the stands taking abuse from all the Steeler fans, and it felt like the game was over before it began.

What are the moments you would like to change if you had the chance?

Easy one. The Gastineau hit in the Cleveland playoff game

Wow, embarrassing that I did not immediately think of that one.

Although it was a Divisional Round game and we still would have had to go to Denver to beat the Broncos to get to the SB. I would have this one as similar to the Brien missed FGs in that both would have sealed a win, but we still would have needed to pull an upset on the road the following week to get to the SB.

You take away the Sanchez strip sack that went for a td in the AFCCG and the Jets go to the bowl with a 19-17 win. As far as the Browns deal the reason the Jets were there in the first place was due to Pat Ryan beating the Chiefs 35-15 in the wild card round.. Even in the Browns game the only td pass came from Pat Ryan, Kenny did nothing as usual come playoff time..On the other hand Bernie Kosar had close to 500 yds passing.. And I still find it funny that fans blame Brien when the offense didn't score at all in that game..LOL

I've been away, but judging by the new avatar I have to assume there has been a late life change in your sexual preference. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but a seal?

I am not sure it is that simple. You are assuming that the rest of the game plays out the exact same way without that play. Take away the strip sack, and assume it is either a sack or incomplete pass. We have the ball 4th and 17. We punt it away and probably go into the half down 17 (we likely dont get the FG to end the half).

Also, in the last 2 minutes, Steelers got down to our 25 and ran out the clock. Down 2, they likely kick a FG or score a TD. The game plays out differently.

LOL, I was getting flagged by Google about your picture so I asked Renegade to contact you about it. I have since installed some kind of mod that prohibits guests from viewing the avatars and sigs. Lets see if that works! So far it's been a month and haven't seen any complaints. They didnt just complain about your avatar though so the fact that your sig was still there and we didnt get a complain from google, was a good sign.

I agree some things may have happened differently but If you can blame just Brien for losing when the offence failed to score a single point I can say we would have made the Bowl..LOL

That one is #1 .

#2 might be Mo Lewis on Drew Bledsoe!

Brady would have played in 2001 even if Mo didn't hurt Bledsoe.. According to a Pat friend that went to Pat camp that year Brady was looking good. Plus BB and Bledsoe went 5-11 in 2000 and had lost to a bad Bengal team in week 1..

Well, there were a LOT of Pats fans who were debating whether Bledsoe should start over Brady going into that first SB. They would never admit it now.

Didn't Bledsoe also just get that $100 mil deal? Hard to sit him without an injury.

Easy for me. In the AFC championship game in Denver (to which I traveled to watch), the Jets were up 10-0 and driving for a huge score in the 3rd quarter. Keith Byers coughs up the ball and the momentum of that game changes on a dime. The Jets would have scored there and been up 17-0 late in the third. I'm convinced that the Jets would have won that game handily if Byers had held on. Parcells was livid and wouldn't even look at Byers when the offense came off the field ( and Byers was one of "his guys).
The Falcons were already the NFC champs. And if the Jets had beaten Denver, they would have manhandled the Falcons in the Superbowl as they already had beaten Atlanta handily earlier in that year.

Not sure where you got the idea that I blame just Brien for that loss. I agree with you that a lot more went wroing in that game than just the two FG misses. We couldn't score, couldn't stop the run and were only in the game because of our defense and specials. Brien had a chance to bail us out and win a game we had no reason winning, but didn't get it done.

If I am going to blame anyone for losing that game, I am going to put it on Herm. After the Barrett interception set us up for a 2nd chance to win the game, he got way too conservative. Played for the 45 yard FG in a stadium that is known for being tough on kickers. And he did that right after our kicker had missed another FG from just about the same spot.

So he was mad at Byers but had no problem with a total of 14 yds rushing from Cumar?? Terrell Davis had 167 yds..

Absolutely brutal loss. We had that game under complete control until that fumble. Talk about a momentum change. It completely changed the game. It took about three days for me to get over that one. My girlfriend at the time was miserable having to be around me.

The Doug Brien misses against Pittsburgh brought out the UGLY in me. Let's just say there was a combination of some alcohol and loud cursing after that second miss. I watched it on DVR, and I should've known it was gonna be a bad game seeing my wife's facial expression the minute I walked in the door.

I've learned to let it go. You have to as a Jets fan.
