If you're talking about uncompromising toughness, work ethic and leading by example rather then with words these three instantly come to mind...

Wayne Chrebet

Curtis Martin

Joe Klecko

I think we need to divide this category into two

1. The Polo Grounds and Shea era

and

2. The NJ era

Because IMO Martin wouldn't have been in the top 20 of the earlier era

Paging Savage69.

Don't think Martin can be put in the "hard nosed" catagory. Good player, stayed healthy, long career. Just don't think he loved football all that much, or was a tough guy.

Chrebet, and Klecko yep.

No mention of Namath.

The guy played his entire career without an ACL. Constant swelling in his knee, often had to have it drained at halftime to play in the 2nd half. He won the SB and had a Hall of Fame career on one leg in an era when QBs were not protected like they are today. That is a tough guy in my book.

This article that I just read today about Martin is what I was talking about, as that's what I remembered about him. Definitely not a tough guy with his mouth yet the epitome of a tough guy by his actions if you ask me...

To me if you're referring to hard nosed players specifically, i.e. "lunch pail guys" then they must be UDFA's. The above is a list of the guys who have always impressed me so much due solely to their hard work and determination.

If you're talking drafted guys? You most normally point to the most successful on the team:

Darrelle Revis
Mo Wilkerson
Nick Mangold
Demario Davis

People are starting to realize Cumar isn't all what he was cracked up to be.. I'll never forget some young Jet fan saying;Wow Martin is better then Jim Brown when he passed Browns yardage total.. I wonder if he felt the same way when I told him Vinny has more td's and passing yardage then Joe Montana and some other HOF QB's..LOL

Both of Joe's knees were bad and yes it deprived us of really seeing what he could have accomplished.

I'll go with Joe, Larry Grantham and Nick Mangold...
