Another Year, Another Competition Tilted in Geno Smith's Favor

I've already predicted Milliner grabs that spot opposite 24

Lets see Milliner do something other than positional drills before we get too excited about him. He usually gets hurt shortly after putting pads on, fortunately, no hitting yet; so no surprise, he isnt hurt yet.

Agreed , but the kid has talent and I think he will step up. Flashed toward the end of his rookie year and had a bad game against Aaron Rodgers, which happens to em all.

Milliner is the Darren McFadden of CB's.

Judging by how Bowles has run his practices and where he came from, the best player will start week one. Obviously the biggest upside out of the two is Geno. Though as the Baltimore Ravens demonstrated in 2000 when they were also trying to squeeze out the talents of a young Tony Banks, the team was sinking by all of his mistakes.

Enter Trent Dilfer, a veteran who was a game manager. Ditto for Fitz if Geno falters. Our defense looks like they can be a top 3 in the NFL. If Geno aint cutting it and is hindering the team, Fitz can be plugged in just to manage what we have.

Teams have done this before, the QB doesnt have to be elite, just keep the game in the favor of the defense:

Jim McMahon
Mark Rypien
Brad Johnson
Trent Dilfer

...Who knows, maybe Fitz can manage this team all the way to Santa Clara on February 7th 2016.

According to reports from the first two practices Geno has gotten off to a solid start. Obviously it's very early but I am hopeful given how strong he ended the season last year. I also give him a mulligan for his rookie year because he had no business playing that season if not for a bone head move by Rex putting Sanchez in the 4th Quarter of a preseason game.

I like how he's handled the fans and reports on being the worse QB in the NFL.

he gets booed one moment, then is red hot yesterday, followed by Fitzpatrick fumbling away two snaps and struggling to run the second team offense for a couple series in a row, and the crowd starts chanting "Geno, Geno, Geno," and the media asks him about it and he shrugs it off the same way he handled the booes.

He knows fans will be on his dick one week praying he plays over Fitz then bitching the first mistake he makes. He's in no win so he handles both situations the same. Have to appreciate that.

Geno has always been a solid camp player and thus far it seems as though nothing has changed.

This gives me great pause. When everything is quite vanilla and it doesn't require much brain power, Geno looks like an MVP. However, when Geno gets any sort of look of a regular season defense and scheme associated with it, he folds up like a cheap suit.

So really this is a tale of two seasons. Geno has never grown up during the regular season. He continues to make the very same mistakes he was making in his rookie campaign.

So really while he looks impressive in camp, I don't believe a second of it. We need to see what he can do against regular seasons:

1) Can he protect the football? He's never done that in the past. Objectively, a turnover machine.

2) Will he stop taking sacks that take the team out of scoring range? He would do something like that pretty much every 3 games.

3) Has his accuracy improved? At times, he's not even close to his intended wide receiver.

4) Can he start breaking down the defense? Most of the time it appears as though Geno has no idea what he's looking at.

5) Can he start successfully going through progressions and completing passes to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th options? This is the area where most QB's IMO fail and Geno is no exception. Can someone please show even one instance last season where he hit his 3rd option?

This is all stuff that Geno needs to improve on. The closest to a tell tale sign for Geno will be during scrimmages in full pads mimicking the regular season. Lets hope we can get a good idea of how he's truly playing at that time.

Thank you. At least someone sees what I am talking about.

For the record, I hope like hell Geno can improve and I do think he's going to. I just don't think he's going to improve enough to get us into the playoffs or become a franchise QB. I don't believe he'll ever be that good.

Really, with the way the team is currently comprised, if Geno can just learn how to protect the football, this team could make the playoffs. I think the defense is going to turn the ball over a lot more than in the past. I think our main source of offense will be the running game. If Geno can protect the football and merely take what the defense is giving him when Gailey puts the ball in his hands, we be OK as a team.

Even if we don't make the playoffs, we could still have a winning record.

Genius Smith cannot win with this fan base.

Brutal crowd.

If he needs the fan base to help him win, then he was done long before arriving in NY. He's heard the boos for two seasons now, he should be able to grasp reality.

If he plays well? The fans CHEER.

If he plays like sh*t? Which is much more often the case, the fans BOO him.

So really it's pretty simple for him. Play well and he won't have a thing to worry about.

Wait, wait, wait....

What did Mike Westhoff say? Wait...is this what he said?

On the Quarterbacks: Geno Smith is the guy. He’s the guy. We know the mistakes he’s made. I’m looking for small steps, and I’ve seen some progressive, small steps from him. I also know he has a better supporting cast.

I don’t see a competition, I just haven’t seen it from Ryan Fitzpatrick.

I heard the same stories from camp last year.
Show it on the field the first 6 or 7 games and I will think about trusting Geno

sounds to me like westy's is saying fitzpatrick hasn't impressed & smith is playing slightly better than last training camp/last season..

so yeah, all i took from his comments is smith is the only QB on the roster that he sees winning the job..

Yeah that's what I took out of it to. I've been squawking for a QB competition, but it's a moot point now, Smith is playing better. he played well in camp last year also.

Don't think we'll be able to see where Smith is at until the bye. jets should handle the Browns. After that the schedule stiffens. The Fish game before the bye should be a good indicator.

Geno Smith, by all accounts, has been solid so far in TC. I believe he is a physically gifted QB, however, the question is can he put it all together and be consistent. He deserves the opportunity to be the starting QB at least at the onset of the season.
