If Geno does by some chance become the starter during the season, and plays well, there is going to be some MAJOR crow eating around here. And I'll be the first one checking in to hear all about it. I hope it happens just to see the hyper-spin from all of his biggest detractors. You can bet your backside that his teammates will get all the credit for anything good he does.

:spamani:

Should I download badges that says Geno supporter and put under people's avatars so when the time is here we know who should eat crow?

They'll be three badges:

Geno Supporter
Geno Detractor
They Both Suck

No longer taking the bait from the Geno Fanbois

Hopefully the BUST never sees the field for the Jets this season or ever

Fitzpatrick this season, Petty next.

Fair point but there are a few people out there that believe Fitz is a huge upgrade over Geno. This article shows that he isn't.

He isn't a huge upgrade, but I believe he is a smarter QB than Geno who is less likely to give the ball to the other team. And for that, he is a huge upgrade over the last 6+ years. If the defense and run game are great then that should translate into more wins.

A good season is the following:

Continue to show good arm strength by stretching the field with his receivers. Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker? It's conceivable.
Continue to show an ability to run when there's nothing open from receivers.
Make better decisions when under pressure. A common thing for young QB's. Geno needs to cut down on picks. No question about it.
Start showing some maturity and assertiveness in the huddle. Make it his team.

I see four big things here. I'm confident Geno can do the first two. The last two are up in the air. But one thing I'm not going to do completely write him off. It's not time for that yet, IMO. The problem with some fans, as I see it, is that they cut the cord way too soon because they feel they've seen enough. I think Geno deserves one more year.

Thank you for the honest answer. Believe it or not, Geno showed big time improvement from year one to last year despite being benched. I think if he can show the same improvement from year 2 to 3 the. He could improve. I will look into this but did see it somewhere either in this forum or somewhere else online.

The first two I think are definitely possible, especially with the addition of Gailey who I believe tailored the offense around Smith.

The last two is all on Smith and thats the hardest. I do want to find out. If Fitz is average, I say we put in Smith anyway unless we are in the playoff hunt.

If you think Geno's been frustrating to watch, just wait to see what happens if Petty gets put in there too soon. He comes from the spread offense, too. And he is extremely raw, just like Geno was.

But I will agree that I like Petty's overall makeup more at this stage. He seems to have a better head on his shoulders. But I think if it happens for Petty, it probably won't be until 2017.

It won't be 2017

not a chance

Competes and probably wins the job from Fitzpatrick in 2016

We prob either draft another qb or acquire another journeyman in free agency next year.

Agree

Maybe both

Competition is good.

I anticipate a tough battle in TC next offseason between Fitzpatrick, Petty, another vet and another draft pick.

And my gut says Petty is the real deal and wins that four way competition

Your going to have 5 QB's in camp next season? Smith will most likely still be on the team.

I don't think so

And that will be my last post on the subject of Punchy from.WVU until he is officially released from the Jets organization

This should be a decent QB class, and it might not cost a fortune to go up and get a guy if we aren't drafting early.

I think you're going to be in a situation where most of the very worst teams in the league won't be looking at QB

Titans, Bucs, Jax have their guy....

We'd just have to worry about the Browns, Texans, Bills and probably the Redskins.

In watching last week's game and in particular the offensive scheme while Fitz was in the game vs Petty spoke volumes to me as to what Gailey has/had in mind when Geno was #1 . Under Fitz it was extremely vanilla with nearly all passes <10 yards. When Petty displayed some early competence, the playbook expanded to some welcome shots downfield. Translation: this offense is built for a QB who can move and has the arm for the homerun ball. Smith, Petty and perhaps a 2016 draftee are those guys, Fitz is not. Playing Owusu and DSmith over JKerley is proof IMHO of balance that Gailey and TB are trying to achieve with the offense. I like Fitz, but he is a backup or placeholder, and we will be mediocre with him as the #1 .

You are right.

If Geno were in there we'd be throwing a whole bunch of home run balls.

If you count a return for a pick six as a "home run ball"

Fitz was a backup and place holder when the team traded for him. The team was viewed by many, because of the QB situation, to be mediocre even before Geno went down. It's not saying much but Fitz is the most capable leader we had behind center since Pennington.

+1

Fitzpatrick, Petty, Flynn or maybe a different vet insurance policy picked up on cut down day....takes care of 2015

Petty, Fitzpatrick, a vet and a draftee..2016 and beyond

Ryan Fitzpatrick thinks he can have a breakout year

Could a broken jaw lead to a breakout year? Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick thinks the answer is absolutely.

Fitzpatrick, who became the de facto starter once IK Enemkpali fractured Geno Smith’s jaw, tells Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that the journeyman-turned-starter-turned-journeyman could have a coming-out party at 33.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” Fitzpatrick said. “So much of the game for the quarterback is the mental side of it. Everybody always talks about my arm and how horrible it is. I promise . . . you can put on some tape [and see] that I can make all the throws that you want me to make or that I need to make. . . . I see myself continuing to get better rather than declining.”

Once Fitzpatrick became the full-time starter in 2010 with the Bills, he had three straight 3,000-yard seasons, maxing out at 3,832 yards in 2011. He earned the kind of contract about which Michael Bennett would have loudly complained, and the Bills opted to move on in lieu of paying a $3 million roster bonus in March 2013.

It’s not out of the question that Fitzpatrick will have a solid year; while 33 is essentially 66 for running backs, quarterbacks are proving that they can perform at a high level after blowing out two-and-a-half-dozen candles, in the sweet spot between an enhanced understanding of the game and the remaining physical abilities.

Regardless, the bar is low — which may be good for Fitzpatrick.

‘That’s been the perception every year,” Fitzpatrick said regarding the notion that he doesn’t belong in the NFL. “Somehow I keep sticking around and finding new jobs. So I don’t really listen to the perception. I hear it, for sure. I just kind of shrug my shoulders and make sure that I focus on what I can control and focus on getting myself better.”

If it works, maybe the Jets will ultimately be glad that Geno Smith wasn’t available to start the season.

Thanks. I actually read a Mehta article today on Fitz that i really liked. It's along these lines. Basically he keeps on saying that the perception of him is that he's weak armed and couldn't amount to anything but has been in the NFL now for a while and keeps latching on to teams. He doesn't buy it and is out to prove the naysayers wrong!!!
