The Jets can breathe a sigh of relief.
Rookie defensive lineman Leonard Williams only has a muscle strain behind his knee and an MRI exam Sunday showed no ligament damage, according to a source. The Jets do not expect it to be a long-term injury. It sounds like Williams will be fine for the season-opener against the Browns in two weeks.
Williams, the No. 6-overall pick in April’s draft, suffered the injury on Saturday night in the Jets’ 28-18 win over the Giants. He left the game in the second quarter and did not return.
The Jets are counting on Williams to start with Sheldon Richardson suspended for at least the first four games of the season.

so is it safe to assume the Jets brass were aware of Sheldon's drug status before he got pinched for the one that got him suspended and that in large part influenced the pick of Williams? Or was it clearly just case of best available player? Either way, they need to stop dickering around with Mo and pay him.
Nobody knows for sure, but I'm betting Richardson had zero to do with the Wiliams pick. Williams was the best player on the board. He shouldn't have even been there at #6 . But the Redskins lost their minds and took the o-lineman instead.
Muhammad Wilkerson is going to get a great deal. He'll be a Jet for many years.

Based on the drug policy for marijuana, this suspension inducing incident would have been the 4TH time caught. 1st lands you in the program, 2nd gets 2-game fine, 3rd gets 4-game fine, 4th gets 4-game suspension.
Bottom line to me is that Sheldon Richardson is a pothead who they would be foolish to invest big money in. He's toking himself right out of a bright future.

That's the whole point I'm making: it's speculation either way.
i maintain that NFL executive circles are small enough that mac with due diligence would have had some inkling a player of richardson's level had failed multiple drug tests..

Glad to hear this. With Sheldon being a straight up idiot and pretty much throwing his season away, we'll need big cat in a big way. He'll rest up these two weeks and should be good for week 1. No one can predict injuries so the Jets picking Williams over White is irrelevant as far a that is concerned. Seems to me this Williams draft pick appears to be more so of what the Jets know that we fans didn't of Sheldon's drug habbits and Mo's potential contract dispute. Yes Williams was the highest ranked player in the draft but he was more of a need then we fans all realized because of Sheldon and Mo's situations. Great pick by the Jets and glad to hear Williams injury isnt serious.
I would offer the decision to take another DL or trade down for more picks (surely would've been an option for a player of his caliber) was influenced in some way by knowing Shelly's problem. They still might've taken Williams anyways, but I have to believe the choice was influenced a bit - at least to the point it may have removed doubt about what to do.
All I know is, I almost bought my boy a Sheldon Richardson jersey last year. Glad I held off on that.
