Great Point, dreamer, they didn't draft an O-lineman until the 7th RD!!!

They watched Andrew Luck take a beating last year, the most hit QB in the league, then they go almost an entire draft without taking an O-lineman, not until the last round do they finally take one from tiny Mars College (and I didn't even know they played football on Mars!)

Otis Sistrunk, University of Mars

Not old enough to remember that one? Anyone else recall?

Oh I definitely remember Otis; big, bald, mean looking dude, the quintessential Raider from back in the day, what I didn't know was that he went to Mars College. Thats a heck of a memory, Fud.

Oh I definitely remember Otis; big, bald, mean looking dude, the quintessential Raider from back in the day, what I didn't know was that he went to Mars College. Thats a heck of a memory, Fud.

Here's the story (as ripped off from Wikipedia):
During a Monday Night Football telecast, a television camera beamed a sideline shot of the 6'5", 265-pound Sistrunk's steaming bald head to the nation. That, along with his lack of a college education resulting in the team program listing Sistrunk's academic background as "U.S. Mars" (short for U.S. Marines), prompted ABC commentator and ex-NFL player Alex Karras to suggest that the extraterrestrial-looking Sistrunk's alma mater was the "University of Mars."

This was about 38 years ago. If you saw it you would remember it :) This was when shaved heads weren't as common. I forgot if it was humid or rainy or what, but the weather that night literally caused steam to rise from his head and the camera angle with the stadium lights behind magnified the whole effect. Karras' comment was timed perfectly and the comment defined his best moment on the show. It is also what Sistrunk (who was a pretty good DE) is most known for. I'm curious now if anyone else remembers it.

Returning to the matter at hand ...

Every so often, a team has a season where there are several wins where the breaks just go their way (like interceptions that turn in to fumble recoveries). Add those to the few earned victories and just maybe enough wins are accumulated to treat your long suffering fans to an actual home playoff game. Why not this year?

Here's to hoping that Lady Luck is not related to the Colts QB.

Jets surprise in OT

The more I think about this, the less confident I am. Todd Bowles is a rookie HC, he's going to have some days where he gets outclassed. Monday is going to be one of those days.

NOT that I think the Colts have better personnel, I don't. I think the 2014 4-12 Jets have the personnel to compete and BEAT the Indy Colts in Indy no less.

I just don't think the Colts CS will be outclassed like that two weeks in a row. They'll have plenty of surprises in store for NYJ. Surprises that I believe the Jets CS will not be prepared for. A few wrinkles in what the Colts normally throw at you.

I think this ends in a blow out for the Colts. Maybe like a 38-14 score? Just something that will surely bring us fans back down to Earth.

We need to remember this team is rebuilding and they are still missing some very important pieces. So no matter what the score, the important thing to see is.... Are they on the right track? Have the pieces they have added so far made this team better? How much better can they be if we add those missing pieces?

Just wondering, if this is the game thread for week 2, or is it more about what the Colts may do?

Either way, I like our chances. Especially with an extra day to prepare. I'm sure the Colts will try to get to a fast start, so the ability to remain patient will be key. We also need an effective run game. It'll be a good test for us while the pressure will fall on them not to drop to 0-2. We're 19-27 in Monday Night Games.

personally, i don't believe jets fans were no longer on "the earth" after beating a bad browns team & i'm quite sure neither is coach bowles..

this is a chance to get to 2-0 on the road on national television against a wounded animal in the colts team..

i don't believe for a moment the jets will be poorly prepared to compete monday night..

2-0 is more likely then the jets getting blown out, IMO..

With all due respect, i could not disagree more.
I feel like Bowles has this Jets team right where he wants them. He has the team well disciplined and has an us vs the world approach, silently.

The Jets have IMHO, all the pieces that all great defenses have in order to win a championship. Sure our QB isn't a HOF'r, but he runs along the lines of a Jim McMahaon, Brad Johnson & Trent DIlfer, in which he doesn't have to do much as long as he doesn't commit the morbid turnovers. Fitz can do the job with the WR core and power run game we need in order to win games. Even the ones that the opposing team out weighs our own QB.

I honestly feel this team resembles very much to the 2011 San Francisco 49ers. Coming off a wretched season from '10, no one gave them much hope with a then rookie head coach Jim Harbaugh. He had set the tone early in that training camp on what he wanted from his team and he got just that.

There are many parallels to that team and the Jets team here. I honestly feel our team this monday night will begin to surprise many football followers, even our own fans.

Once again, I totally agree.....and I'll add something. I saw last weekend, for the first time in a l-o-n-g, l-o-n-g, time, a Jets team that played with great effort from start to finish. Even considering the slow start. I saw a Jets team showing FIRE after every good play. I saw Jets players making a concerted effort to get and keep the crowd into the game all day long. These things have been missing from this team for YEARS.....and you cannot underestimate how important they both are to winning football games.

What I saw was discipline from players and consistency from a coaching standpoint. These two key elements have been missing for at least 6 years.

I'm going to reserve complete optimism until I finish watching the game Monday night. The Jets have looked good on opening day against mediocre teams before, but this game will show if we can contain a very good QB on the road. That's a true test. Cleveland is a bottom half team in this league.

Call me "cautiously optimistic". Regardless, it doesn't even have to be a win to convince me. I want to win,but if we stay with Indy and do a reasonable job on both sides of the ball, it will be encouraging.

He will but I'm not quite sure Geno goes in over Petty. I don't know if its a given anymore. If that was the case, I think they would have kept atleast one of those vet QBs. I think Geno has to earn or take the #2 spot from Petty on the field. By his play, maturity, character and leadership in practice and we know Geno's maturity, character and leadership is in huge question. Hence the jaw break fiasco!

He already did on the field during training camp. Listen, I hate Geno as much as anyone. I wish the Jets would just be done with him and move to a real franchise QB possibility. Hopefully, that guy is Bryce Petty.

But lets not get ahead of ourselves. Geno Smith was the BEST QB in training camp. Before Geno got b*tch slapped, he was playing the best football and was winning the QB competition by a large margin.

Bryce Petty will get his chance. To that end I have no doubt. But Geno is still a MUCH better QB than Bryce Petty at least right now.

I also think Fitzpatrick did a very nice job of protecting the football and taking what the defense was giving him after being spoken to by the coaching staff late in the 1st half. It's possible Fitz could stick for a while and allow this team to go on a playoff run if he keeps up his good play.

Todd Bowles warns Jets about underestimating Colts

By Kimberley Martin

Todd Bowles didn't have to say it. But he did anyway.

He refused to let the external hype of a Week 1 victory over the Browns infiltrate his locker room. So as his Jets were preparing to face a wounded Colts team, Bowles preached the importance of not looking past their next opponent.

Truth be told, though, his players never considered it.

"I don't understand how you can look past a team that's been to the playoffs the last three years in a row,'' defensive lineman Leger Douzable said of the Colts, who were bullied by Rex Ryan's Bills, 27-14, in Sunday's season opener. "He didn't really have to say that to us, we know that. This is a veteran-heavy team and we know that wasn't their best effort in Week 1. We know it's Monday Night Football.

"They play a lot different at home than on the road, so we know they're going to come out juiced up ready to play us.''

One of the Jets' biggest challenges will be facing Andrew Luck. Although he threw two interceptions against the blitz-happy Bills, the fourth-year quarterback has the physical tools and pocket awareness to pick apart the Jets.

"He can beat you with his brain, he can beat you with his arm, he can beat you with his feet,'' Bowles said of Luck, who completed 26 of 49 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns against Buffalo. "He's just a hell of a quarterback. He's easily one of the best in the league.''

The Colts are hopeful that injured wide receiver T.Y. Hilton, who did not practice yesterday because of a knee injury, will be ready by game time. Standout pass rusher Robert Mathis (Achilles) was limited, but the Jets are preparing as if he'll play. "We'll have our hands full with him, too,'' Bowles said.

Cornerback Vontae Davis also could spell trouble for the Jets.

"Man, we had some good battles,'' wideout Brandon Marshall said of facing his former Dolphins teammate. "This kid is really talented, and I always thought that when Vontae's super-focused, he's one of the best in the business -- if not the best -- behind our guy .''

The Jets are seven-point underdogs, but the loss at Buffalo has some football pundits and fans wondering if the Colts are for real.

"When you win, everybody writes great things about you, and when you lose, they come from all corners,'' coach Chuck Pagano said. "You're going to get a barrage from everywhere. That's just the National Football League. We've got our blinders on, we've got our earmuffs on. Our total focus is on today and getting better.''

Bowles downplayed the notion that the Colts are more dangerous coming off a loss. "Everybody is a dangerous team,'' he said. "Anybody can beat anybody.''

Douzable disagreed.

"As a man, you never like to get whupped,'' he said. "So when you lose the way [they did], they're going to be extra hyped because nobody wants to go down 0-2.

"We're going to get their best effort and we know that. We all know that the team we've seen the last three years, that's the team we're going to get on Monday.''

The Jets will come out firning Monday night. All this talk about the Colts being "ANgry" and wanting to show case week one was a fluke may be true, but dont get it twisted, Todd Bowles team wants to plac ce the NFL on notice that this Jets squad must not be taken lightly either.

Gonna be an excellent game.
