Why the love for Devin Smith? Here is why!!

Here is why, (watch the videos below)... I stated in the game post; better throws equal big plays with this guy.... Someone stated he doesn't get spereation and that's not true. In the NFl seperation is about position, inches and ball placement by the QB:

https://twitter.com/TurnOnTheJets/status/648887035432992768

This shows a good throw towards the sideline and an easy completion and Smith got great position off the line

https://twitter.com/TurnOnTheJets/status/648888662864826368

This video shows again what a good pass could lead to.. If he is hit in stride, he has so much space with his speed to get to the outside and probably around the whole D but at bare minimum another 10-15yds...

I hope this comes with reps with Fitz.

And my last twitter link for this thread. I said yesterday Fitz has to get over the top because Smith was open alot... Here is Damien Woody saying the same

Devin smith should become a great weapon, however, he did not fight for contested balls Sunday. Had he defended the bad throws the interception wouldn't have happened. It's like he sees the ball is off and stops playing. That is a very bad habit.

I don't know about him not fighting for the ball it was way under thrown and at the knees of the CB... I don't think Smith could have done anything to fight for that terrible pass..

Fitz underthrew most of the longer passes

D.Smith's value is significantly diminished because the QB does not have the arm to throw deep

I haven't studied the film, but what I saw was that he easily could have put a hand in the middle or attempt some kind of physicality. Also, that unsportsmanlike penalty for the tackle in the 2nd was outrageous.

Nonsense. Bad read & bad throw by Fitz. A rookie in his first pro game and Fitz throws(under throws) into double coverage. Dream'in.

There was actually pretty good coverage on Smith, but the pick is all on Fitz.

He's got to throw that ball out in front of Smith, and give him a chance to make a play on it.

The other two, not so much

Both of you are missing the point. Yes he was covered, yes the ball was under thrown. But as a receiver, it's your job to recognize, uh oh something bad is going to happen, and get a hand in there. Even if you can't break it up, at least make an attempt to do something. Smith became a spectator after realizing he couldn't catch the ball.

I'm not slamming the guy, he's a rookie, but that is not a good trait. It's something that he needs to learn from Marshall, to fight for every ball. Not to just run a route real fast turn around and shrug your shoulders.

I get what you are saying, and if it was Marshall, Decker, or Kerley, I would agree.

It was Smith's first trip on the field. With out a summer camp, or even a mini camp. I actually thought he did a lot better then I had anticipated. I thought he was just going to just run fly's to draw coverage. If Decker was healthy that's probably all he would have done.

And with that, the call might have been planned as a back shoulder throw, that he was supposed to come back for. Jets have been running a lot of them. IDK

Can't expect the kid to act like a seasoned vet first time out.

I can't disagree with you more... on the other 2 Smith almost made spectacular catches on sh***Y throws.. and on the INT. There was no way he could make any play on the ball.... Watch the tape... The ball was thrown well short of Smith and short of the CB at his shins.......The only play Smith had was maybe, a big maybe, getting a PI and trying to hit the CB before the ball got there. And it's a big maybe cause Smiths Momentum running the fly pattern would have made it difficult to stop and hit the cb without possibly injuring himself to do so.

Not really.

The ball was over Rowe's shoulder, he made a nice catch leaning forward, and tumbled into the end zone head first. Good defensive play

It was possible Smith could have contested for it, but it would have been a great play, and you just can't expect that from such a green player.

Fitz puts just a bit more lift on it, it's probably 6
.

Hands down Fitzs fault, I'm just saying is like to have seen some effort. I didn't expect him to rip it out of the defenders hands, just do something.

And I'm not smith is a bum, just observing. The equivalent of seeing a rookie run out a ground ball to first.

One thing is for sure, Devin will excel once Petty is ready to take the reigns. The combo of a big time arm and Devins speed...OH BABY!!

yup and at OSU he was great at it.

Actually, Smith's inability to fight for the ball has always been an issue:

WEAKNESSES Lacks natural, soft hands. Will double catch and corral throws into body. Tries to catch, turn and run before securing the throw. Shows a lack of patience in his routes. Game too heavily reliant upon speed. Must learn to be effective when deep ball is restricted by defense. Thin hips and frame. Play strength is below average. Can be frustrated by physical corners. Gets jostled and distracted when bodied hard down the field. Desire lacking as run blocker. Often taken off field and replaced when Buckeyes wanted to run out of "11" personnel.

WEAKNESSES: Lean body type with wiry muscle tone...field fast with light feet, but looks mechanical when asked to move laterally...doesn't set up defenders in his routes and lacks diverse stem releases...wild footwork in his patterns and lacks control in his movements, making him most effective in a straight-line - unpolished as an underneath target and struggles to sink and separate in his breaks.

Inconsistent hands and drops too many easy throws with streaky focus...tracks the ball well, but late to adjust and attack if the ball doesn't hit him in stride...will get pushed around and too easily re-routed and knocked off his path...averaged only 2.2 catches per game as a senior and his limitations kept him from being an every-down receiver

what I saw was a CB get position.....Smith was boxed in by the CB against the sideline - leaving a small window to make a completion.

Right, and just like your post, smith stopped there. As a wr, when you notice oh shit, that's getting intercepted, you should attempt to fight in any possible way. Get a hand in, tackle, flail your hands like a sissy, anything except just shrugging your shoulders and becoming a spectator.

I'm not murdering the kid, is his first game and he should be proud for coming back from broken ribs and catching some balls. But if I'm his coach, I'm suggesting he contest the next under thrown ball.
