And with the Jets, Marrone and Maccagnan go way, way back. Maccagnan signed him to be QB of the London Monarchs in 1991. Strong bond there

Wait I see a pattern here Marrone,Maccagnan and Monarchs all M's coincidence?? I think not, we have our GM and HC book it..

The Chiefs hired Reid before their GM, and the Browns hired Pettine before their GM. It's not that unusual! Don't think everything is like Idzik/Rex.

And I see two teams that haven't done anything, unless I missed something. Also, the browns aren't the franchise I'd like to model myself after. Reid may be a different story because of track record. He is a winner who has coached a Super Bowl team. Pettine, nothing. Marrone isn't cowher or gruden who you just hand the keys to. He is 15-17 as a head coach. You get the gm and he builds.

We agree to disagree. While in a perfect world the GM comes first, you don't lose the best candidate available because the GM is not in place. Besides, look at the Giants, Mara announced that Coughlin was coming back, not Reese.

If it's Marrone, I'm completely on board. Offensive background, knows NY, Parcells/Payton tree, disciplinarian and most importantly HC EXP.

Besides two of the GM's the Jets are interviewing have a relationship with Marrone already nothing like the rex/idzick marriage at all.

Fair enough. We both want what's best

Doug Marrone was 15-17 as Bills coach. Three of those wins came against the Jets, who were outscored by 118-40.

Jets to make a run at Doug Marrone: source

By Brian Costello and Mark CannizzaroDecember 31, 2014 | 7:07pm

The Jets search for a new head coach took a sudden, interesting turn late Wednesday.
Doug Marrone opted out of his contract as Bills head coach and has become a target of the Jets, according to a league source.

Marrone, 50, is from The Bronx and spent four seasons as the Jets offensive line coach under Herm Edwards. The Jets can hire Marrone immediately if they choose to.

They interviewed assistant head coach/running backs Anthony Lynn on Wednesday, satisfying the Rooney Rule that requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate.
Marrone spent two seasons as the Bills head coach, going 15-17. Before that, he was the head coach at Syracuse University, where he went 25-25 in four seasons.

The opt out by Marrone was shocking. He had a unique option to opt out over a three-day window that began Monday. The opt-out clause was included in his contract in case there was an ownership change. When Terry and Kim Pegula purchased the franchise in October, it triggered the clause.

“We are disappointed that Coach Marrone will no longer be an important part of our organization,” Bills owner Terry Pegula said in a statement. “We thank him for all of his hard work and leadership during his tenure and wish him and his family the best with the next chapter in their lives.

“We will now begin the important process of conducting a thorough search for a new head coach as we continue to strive to reach our goal of returning to the playoffs and bringing a championship to Buffalo for our fans.”

A source said Marrone was concerned about possible changes in the Bills organization. It has been rumored that Pegula is going to bring in someone to oversee football operations, possibly Bill Polian. He wanted to know if that was true and who the person would be, but Bills ownership would not tell him.

According to ESPN, Marrone will walk away with his 2015 guaranteed base salary of $4 million, even if he should take another job

The Jets couldn't get DeCosta if they kidnapped him..

Actually I'm surprised DeCosta hasn't publicly turned down interviews yet. Still expect him to.

If he decides to to take a GM job don't see any reason why he wouldn't be interested in the Jets. Tons of cap space, early draft pick. Looks like a great spot for a talent orientated GM to go.

GM picks the coach. That's the right route. Otherwise you get a half assed gm who is forced to work with a coach he may not like, a la idzik and Rex. Gm is hired and interviews and picks the coach so they are on the same page. We hire marrone who has a vision and a gm who has another and we may as well have kept Rex and idzik

The problem with your thinking is that any GM coming onboard would either be supportive of Marrone's aims and goals or not come on at all. Its his choice. He'd know upfront the direction the HC wants to go in. Some guys here have stated that two potential GM's to be interviewed have ties to Marrone already.

Plus he could be tired of waiting for the GM job in Baltimore to open up. Lets hope that he is!

Sources: Jets have strong interest in ex-Bills coach Doug Marrone

Doug Marrone has opted out of his contract with the Buffalo Bills, setting up the possibility of a homecoming with the New York Jets.

The Jets, searching for Rex Ryan's replacement, have interest in the Bronx native, according to sources. And the feeling is mutual. Marrone is a coaching free agent, meaning he has the ability to go wherever he wants. The Jets are expected to schedule an interview with Marrone.

Coaching Carousel

The coaching search is in the early stages, as the Jets have interviewed only one candidate -- their running backs coach, Anthony Lynn. Even though they have interviews scheduled with at least two other candidates, the Jets could hire Marrone immediately. They're already in compliance with the Rooney Rule, having interviewed Lynn.

Jets owner Woody Johnson is familiar with Marrone, who was the team's offensive line coach from 2002-05 under Herm Edwards. He left for the New Orleans Saints when Edwards and his staff were fired after the 2005 season, but Marrone always spoke fondly of his experience in New York.

Marrone grew up in the shadow of the Throgs Neck Bridge and used to say it gave him chills as he rode through the Bronx on the team bus on the way to the Jets' home games. In those days, the Jets trained on Long Island.

He coached the Buffalo Bills for only two seasons, finishing with a 15-17 record. On the surface, it's not good, but their 9-7 finish this season was the franchise's first winning season since 2004. Much like Ryan with the Jets, he was handcuffed by inconsistency and instability at the quarterback position. He started out with EJ Manuel and turned to journeyman Kyle Orton.

In a very indirect way, Marrone contributed to Ryan's demise, beating the Jets twice this season. The second meeting, Nov. 24, took place at Ford Field because of the snowstorm that paralyzed the Buffalo area. Despite having to postpone practices and traveling to Detroit to prepare for the game, the Bills routed the Jets, 38-3. Johnson was said to be impressed with how the Bills coped with the adversity and played so well.

Interestingly, one of the Jets' general manager candidates has a link to Marrone -- Philadelphia Eagles director of pro personnel Rick Mueller. He and Marrone worked together with the Saints from 2006 to 2008. The Jets are planning to interview Mueller early next week, so a Marrone-Mueller tandem isn't out of the question

Plenty of opinions about whether Doug Marrone to Jets is a good fit. One member of the organization just told me: "That doesn't make sense" 45m
