INDIANAPOLIS -- Jets coach Todd Bowles will leave the NFL Scouting Combine to tend to a personal matter, according to a league source, who declined to offer specifics.

Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan were originally scheduled to address reporters Wednesday at the Combine. But that session was moved to Thursday.

And then came Wednesday's news that Bowles will leave Indianapolis. The New York Daily News reported Bowles will leave to attend his ex-wife's funeral on Friday in Richmond, Va.

It is not clear when Bowles will leave the Combine and when he will return. The NFL Scouting Combine began Tuesday and concludes Monday. The Jets have yet to announce any changes to Bowles' scheduled Thursday media session, so he is still expected to address reporters then.

A Jets spokesman declined to comment on Bowles leaving the Combine.

Bowles' ex-wife, Jill Jenkins Bowles, died Feb. 19, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The visitation is Thursday evening, the funeral Friday afternoon.

NFL coaches are not required by the league to speak with reporters at the Combine, so Bowles' press conference in Indianapolis is a voluntary exercise. Bowles is also scheduled to observe and meet with NFL Draft prospects at the Combine.

Of course, a serious family matter like a death should always take priority, especially when the Jets still have a large contingent of scouts, coaches, and front office executives in Indianapolis for the Combine. Team reps spend hours at the Combine interviewing prospects.

Can't imagine him being at the combine serves any real purpose? There's no way he'll be the HC past 2017.

Um... you do realize that we're dealing with the fact that someone actually died, right?

OK, I'm going to show what a practical (you may call it heartless) fucker I am.
1) it was his EX-wife. If he still loved her, he'd still be married to her.
2) Anything that gets him away from the combines is a good thing. He showed with his reticence to play Bilal Powell last year (until the fans and the press practically forced him to do it) that he shouldn't be anywhere near young players. He can't evaluate them properly.

Yes, I do realize that. I don't believe I am being insensitive when I say he won't be the HC past 2017. This is a definite make or break season for him. If he does not change his act and start winning a lot more games, he'll be gone. That's just a fact. I do feel for Bowles and his loss, but when it comes to this team, he's barely clinging to life in NY........

she is also the mother of two of his children. and you don't need to still be in love with someone you previously shared your life with to attend that person's funeral.

sometimes i think people lose perspective that this is a game. death is real. football is a game

Thanks for that response; it gets crazy around here sometimes.

I still remember those old bumper stickers that said "Football isn't life or death. Its more important than that." It was my lame attempt to spoof them.
No attitude adjustment needed. Sorry if that offended anyone.

But I was serious about the other point I made.
