Still Lots Of Options

The NFL year begins and where do we stand? No moves have been made so far and I'm fine with that. I would have loved to have signed Nick Perry but he wasn't exactly going to put us over the top anyway. There are several solid moves Mac can make. Start with trading Sheldon. Between the Cowboys and Broncos, one of those teams should want this guy. As I posted elsewhere, send him to the Cowboys or Broncos for Trevor Siemian and a third. Trade #6 to the Browns for #12 and second rounder this year and next year (they now have three second round picks next season).

REE AGENTS

Kevin Mintner, ILB, 26
Zach Brown, ILB, 27
Logan Ryan, CB, 26
JC Tretter, C, 26
Reilly Reif, T, 28

DRAFT

#12 - Ryan Ramczyk, OT

#33 - Zay Jones, WR
#39 - Tra'davious White, CB

#70 - Adam Shaheen, TE
#82 - Dawaune Smoot, DE/OLB
#107- Kendall Beckwith, ILB

It looks like Mac is ok with either Ijalana or Shell as the starter at RT next year. I would sign Reif anyway which would allow them to take the BPA at #12. With all the purging he's done, if Mac is planning on starting the same OL as last year, this team will not make any progress.

Mintner and Brown would provide a huge upgrade over David Harris and whoever they have in there. It's clear to me Darren Lee doesn't belong on the inside. He needs to be used elsewhere where's he's not getting pushed around by very large OL.

Well obviously they won't be starting the same offensive line as last year as Nick Mangold is gone. You think the players are not going to grow and improve whatsoever and that they will not draft any help? Eh, maybe your'e right, maybe your'e wrong?
Minter could be nice; at the right deal. Patience. A lot of moves made today by a lot of teams that are nice on paper but mean nothing to 31 teams come February. We are not 2 or 3 players out, let's build this right for once.

I thought I saw Reiff signed with the Vikes.... Honestly if we can land Minter and Ryan at this point.... I'll be a happy camper.... I am good with the trade and those picks but not a WR at 33 a TE would be better there

He did indeed. I think Beachum was a decent get. Still think we need to draft a center in the mid-rounds. I'm kind of concerned that we haven't signed a corner who could be a solid #2. Clairborne? Only if it's a decent one year prove-it deal. I think it's a given we take a corner in rounds 1 or 2. I think Mintner will be signed to replace Harris.

I'm still hoping we can swing (the headache of) Sheldon Richardson for McCarran and a third or fourth. That should get us a starting center.

Wesley Johnson played very well last year.. He had a few moments but overall I think he is an above average starter based on what he did show last year with Mangold out... I'm not against getting another center in this draft for depth and to push Johnson... But a starter is not a need IMO

With all due respect, I don't agree. I think the QB's were under fire big time last season and while I'm not blaming Johnson for all of it I think an upgrade is needed at both tackles as well. To be straightforward I'm not happy with keeping Winters let alone paying him $6mm per year. If we go with what we have right now, I just don't think the QB play will improve regardless of who's back there.

Both Winters and Johnson graded out pretty high along with Carpenter... Our weak link on OL was LT and influx of RT's from Qvale to Ijalana to Giacomini (who was awful) and then Shell who looked pretty good (albeit only 2 games). So with awful play at LT and RT not sure how you equate that to Johnson and Winters needing to be upgraded when they were the only bright spots with Carpenter.... But you are entitled to your opinion even if every Stat says otherwise.

Winters and Johnson both graded out in the 30's which I don't think is pretty high. Carpenter was #17 which is ok. I agree that Shell was decent but, as you point out, that was just two games. Beachum was recovering and his grade was terrible but let's hope it gets better. Not trying to pick a fight here. I respect your opinions.

I would like to see Mintner replace Harris and I would take a flyer on Claiborne on a one year deal. My first choice would be Hightower but I don't think he'll sign with us. I really doubt the Steelers want to sign him rather than just raise the price for the Pats. They have a much better shot at that than we do given how good they are.

I don't believe our OL is as good as you think. Carpenter is the only one who stood out. Winters is garbage and only played well because of his contract year. Johnson is nothing but a backup and I am hoping Shell will improve upon last year and become a solid RT. Other then that, whatever QB we sign will be running for there lives. This is only my opinion.

You have your opinion and I have mine... I think Winters has been playing well for over 2 years now.. I think OL's are the perfect example of the term " you are only as strong as your weakest link" and last year the LT position and Rt position were awful. With Qvale/Ijalana rotating at RT early in the year they were solid.. Clady was ok when health. Once Clady went down, and Ijalana went to LT and Giacomini came off IR and started the wheels came off and the OL went to crap... With Ijalana back at RT or Shell winning the battle, Carpenter and Winters at G, Johnson at C and Beachum at LT this will be a much improved unit. It will be an above average unit. and if the QB plays snart and can make quick reads they will be fine, whoever it is. If they stand back their making poor decisions and not making quick reads to get rid of the ball quick then he will have issues but it won't be the OL's fault... That's my opinion and frankly lets hope I am right and you are wrong... either way I am ready for a full rebuild year and looking forward to the #1 overall pick in 2018

I'm not as high on Johnson as some are, but I think you are allowing past concerns about Winters cloud the judgment of this past year. This fan base bashed Slauson when he was here, despite his progress, and he went elsewhere and was stellar for a while. I like that we aren't making that mistake again.

Our OL is not among the league's best, but I don't think it's the gaping hole it had been, or what some believed it to be.

Defensive End Howard Jones is coming to visit the Jets. A deal is said to be contingent upon the team allowing him to bring his synthesizers with him.

If healthy a very good pickup... Especially if we trade Richardson add to the DE rotation with Thomas who is also recovering from injury but man I liked how that kid looked before his injury.

I'm glad Mac tried to sign Hightower without over reaching. I don't believe the Jets should try to stink the place out next year for the sake of higher draft picks. With few exceptions successful teams are not built that way. The great teams are great because they know how to draft throughout the seven rounds.

There are still good options. Signing Howard Jones, Mintner AND Zach Brown for the price of Hightower. Yes, I would move Lee to the outside. That would take care of the front seven so no need to address in the draft. I think Claiborne is a good get on a one year prove it deal, however that would not eliminate the need to draft a #1 corner very early in the draft. Now lets say Mac trades the 6th pick for #12, and #33, trades (the headache of) Sheldon Richardson to the Cowboys for #60 and trades #39 to the Falcons for #63 and #95.

#12 - Teez Tabor, CB

#33 - Jabrill Peppers, S, Athlete
#60 - Zay Jones, WR
#63 - Adam Shaheen, TE
#95 - Roderick Johnson, OT
#107 - Ethan Pocic, C/G

That would be a nice haul. Peppers uniform would immediately become the #1 Jets jersey and a big fan favorite. Roderick Johnson provides backup for now and future LT. Pocic starts at center day one. If Wesley Johnson becomes a legit #1 center, Pocic moves to guard to free up Carpenters money next season. Tabor and Peppers form a dynamic secondary. Jones and Shaheen provide lots of options for whomever is at QB.

As each of these picks are announced expect to hear the following;
  • He's a beast!
  • A steal!
  • Pedigree!
  • Bloodlines!
Just having fun there! :)
