I feel better about the LT position. Ijalana is not a starter. Finally we do something. It had been quiet.
Sounds like Ijalana will be competition at RT for Shell and a backup option for Beachum at LT. That makes sense. His versatility is a positive.
The red flag is that he was signed to a big contract and then was cut the next year.
Not quite. He was signed to a 1 year deal with a 4 year option that required a considerable increase on his salary the longer he stayed. Jax didn't want to pay the salary. Had nothing to do with performance. Beachum played well last season, according to Jaguars beat writers.
I'll bet it had something to do with performance. LT's don't just walk free.
Or, it had something to do with Tom Coughlin loving new FA acquisition Branden Albert, who's their new LT. Just read all about it on their bleacher report page. Coughlin had his sights set on Albert for a while.
Solid move. Not the sexiest move, but this gives the Jets some legit starting power at almost every OL position. The unit is becoming solid, even if not spectacular and splashy.
That's not necessarily legit given the circumstances.
Not sure I would get too high on this pick as he did give up 49 QB pressures and was ranked 63rd out of 78 tackles by PFF. He also was coming off an ACL in 2015 so perhaps two years away will be better for him. Not a lot of options for Mac in both FA and draft so probably a decent signing.
Considering the ACL came midway through the 2015 season , I'd give Beachum the benefit of the doubt. They say it takes the first year to recover and the second year to train. He was considered a top LT before the injury.
He had an ACL and didn't play well last year but the year before he layed very well. Its a gamble but a god one to tae.
4 mill first year cap hit,I believe. 9.5ish on years 2 and 3.

Exactly right. He was inconsistent last year due to acl complications, another year removed should make a huge difference.
Jags upgraded by cutting him, we upgraded by signing him.
