Goodell finally does something right

Dear Fans,

Here at the NFL, we have a relentless drive to improve—particularly when it comes to the way fans experience our game.

In order to understand how we might deliver a better and more exciting entertainment experience for you, we embarked on a specific project before the start of the 2016 season to gather feedback about the in-stadium and live NFL game viewing experience.

Consistently, we heard from fans that we can improve in two key areas: the flow and pace of the game, and commercialization and the number of unnecessary disruptions to the game on the field.

Today, I want to tell you about some of the ways we are working to address that.

On the football side, there are a number of changes we are making to the mechanics and rules of the game to maintain excitement and also improve the consistency of our officiating.

For example, next week clubs will vote on a change to centralize replay reviews. Instead of a fixed sideline monitor, we will bring a tablet to the Referee who can review the play in consultation with our officiating headquarters in New York, which has the final decision. This should improve consistency and accuracy of decisions and help speed up the process.

Regarding game timing, we're going to institute a play clock following the extra point when television does not take a break, and we're considering instituting a play clock after a touchdown. We're also going to standardize the starting of the clock after a runner goes out-of-bounds, and standardize halftime lengths in all games, so we return to the action as quickly as possible. Those are just a few of the elements we are working on to improve the pace of our game.

Together with our broadcast partners, we will be working to meaningfully reduce down time and the frequency of commercial breaks in our game. We will also be giving our broadcast partners increased flexibility to avoid untimely breaks in the action. For example, we know how annoying it is when we come back from a commercial break, kick off, and then cut to a commercial again. I hate that too. Our goal is to eliminate it.

We also know that you feel there are too many elements in the broadcast that aren't relevant to the play on the field. With our partners, we will be looking to instead focus on content that is most complementary and compelling to you–whether that is analysis, highlights or stories about our players.

All of these changes are meant to give you more of what you want: a competitive game with fewer interruptions and distractions from the action.

There is much more work to do in the coming seasons as we continue to listen and learn. But these positive changes are intended to create a better experience for you, our fans.

We hope that you will continue to give us feedback on how we can improve.

Thank you for all that you do for our players, our teams and our game.

i guess he's taking the fall of ratings seriously enough to reduce commercial breaks. CBS is unbearable with all their advertisements.

for those who are too lazy to read Goodell's letter, the league will be voting on a few changes:

no more time consuming reviews under the hood. Instead the ref will have a tablet where he can review and speak with the headquarters in NY to come to a decision.

Second, they will put a game clock after a touchdown to ensure the PAT happens quickly.

they will limit commercial breaks especially those which occur back to back. Once after a TD and then after a kickoff.

Yes, read about this in today's paper. The trouble is, by "limiting commercial breaks" what they mean is a smaller number of breaks Unfortunately, each break will be longer. I'll bet the total commercial time will be the same, or even longer. Oh well, that just will give me more time to check out other games on Sunday Ticket while the Jet game is on commercial.

I really don't get how dumb the nfl is. Why don't they go to live read commercials? Keep the camera on the field and have the announcer talk about sleepy mattresses for 15 seconds after a pat.

Good idea. Reminds me a bit of the gimmick some beer company used during the playoffs a long time ago. The commercial was a beer tasting where the taster compared his favorite beer to that of the sponsor. To prove it was live, the test was run by an ex-NFL official who mentioned the current score of the game. Not really the same as your idea, but at least it made some attempt to tie the product to the game.

Worst commercial break, in my opinion, is to go to an ad after an extra point, come back for the kickoff, and then go back to another ad after the kick (often a touchback).

Yeah, that really sucks. But what if they replace those with just a single commercial that runs longer than the multiple ones it replaces? Probably will suck just as bad, if not worse.

Or run a split screen while the teams are lining up to kick.
Honestly, I'm fine eliminating kickers.

But this last year was really bad. I was really pissed at the constant commercials, and my wife who is a fair weather fan stopped watching games because it was so annoying. She commented to me about the commercials un prompted, and said she couldn't watch.

I really felt like I was watching a4 hour commercial with a little football here and there. And it destroys the competitive Flow on the field. The players are constantly just standing around waiting on commercials to end. It's super annoying in the stadium, and the players are getting a ton of free timeouts. What would happen if they actually had to play the whole game with only 3 timeouts. A lot of guys would be fatigued I'm sure.

I know what you mean. But in my case, being outside the NYC broadcast market, I need Sunday Ticket in order to get every Jet game. And one positive extra aspect of that is the Game Mix channel. It's even better than having a picture-in-a-picture TV, which I don't have. It lets me watch a bunch of other games while the Jet game is on commercial and, since the Jet game is on Game Mix too, I can see when the ads have finished and switch right back to the Jet game without missing a down. Doesn't quite cure the issue, but it's a lot better than actually watching all that commercial noise.

Interesting, how does it work? Does it switch back on its own?
Of course this means paying the nfl more money, I could just switch channels myself.

The Game Mix is available on two channels. One channel shows 4 games simultaneously, the other channel shows 8 games simultaneously. I switch to the 4 game channel if the Jets are on it, or to the 8 game channel if they are not on the 4 game channel. The view does not switch back to the Jet game automatically. But it is easy to switch back to the game with a single click, because the DirecTV remote includes a button that lets you flip back and forth between two channels with just one click. At the start of the game what you do is check out which of the 2 Game Mix channels the Jets are on. You get to the Jet game by using arrows to highlight the Jet game, then punch a button to "select" it. After that, it's switching back and forth using the single click remote button. Of course, when the Jets are not playing, say they are on a bye, have a night game, or playing at 4 when you are watching at 1 or vice versa, the same tricks can be used to watch any available game you are interested in and still avoid commercials. If the Jets are on a local broadcast channel they are blacked out on the DirecTV channel showing that game. But they aren't blacked out on the Game Mix channels. So it is always possible to avoid commercials, even when they are broadcast locally.

And yes, it does mean paying the NFL more money. But as someone who isn't in the Jet local broadcast area, that's what I have to do if I don't want to miss any Jet games. For me personally, I am actually paying full freight just to get half the Jet games. That's because the Jets are broadcast here locally as long as their game does not conflict with the Pat game. That causes about half the Jet games to be broadcast here. But I still pay, because I don't want to miss any Jet games.
