Jets held a private workout for Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer

theJetsblog -- The latest proof of that is the report that they've already held a private workout with DeShone Kizer, the Notre Dame quarterback considered to be one of the top three quarterback prospects in the draft. That explains why Jets GM Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles skipped Notre Dame's Pro Day on Thursday and were both at Ohio State's Pro Day instead.

The Jets also have a private workout scheduled with North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who revealed that "secret" to reporters at his own Pro Day earlier this week. And while it's not known if the Jets plan to do the same with Clemson's DeShaun Watson, it seems likely that they will.

The Jets have been represented at all three of their Pro Days and they conducted private interviews with all three of them at the NFL scouting combine earlier this month. In fact, they interviewed several other top quarterback prospects too, including several not likely to be drafted in the first couple of rounds.

Trubisky, Watson, and Kizer are generally believed to be the only first-round-worthy quarterbacks in this draft. The Jets, of course, are still searching for a franchise quarterback after signing free agent Josh McCown, a 37-year-old journeyman who will likely at least head into training camp as their starter. They did draft Christian Hackenberg in the second round last year, but that doesn't seem to be stopping the Jets from at least investigating an upgrade.

Most people around the NFL don't believe the Jets will draft a quarterback at No. 6, but Maccagnan made it clear that he wants to trade that pick and move down in the draft. He almost certainly could do that and still land one of the Top 3 quarterbacks if that's the direction he chooses to go.

Meanwhile, the Jets continue to investigate other first-round options. At Ohio State's Pro Day on Thursday Maccagnan and Bowles were surely doing work on cornerback Marshon Lattimore and safety Malik Hooker, both of whom are expected to go in the Top 10, if not the Top 5, and both of whom would fill a huge need for the Jets.

Bowles is also reportedly at Michigan's Pro Day on Friday, where safety/linebacker Jabril Peppers and defensive end Taco Charlton -- two options if the Jets were to trade down in the first round -- are the stars.

HARD PASS!!!!!! This kid has a ton of talent but he has more to work on than Petty and Hack did coming out.... He is at least a 3 year project.... We have 2 guys like that already that arr going on year 2 and year 3...... He has lazy footwork.... He plays with a serious lack of urgency... He has a slight hitch in his throw.... And I am no scout and I can see that. And now there are the reports and rumors he wasn't a very good leader at ND..... SO NO and NOPE

I'm an Irish fan, and I say "no".

I saw some INT's at critical moments during his time at ND that concerned me. That is a HUGE red flag for me.

I do believe all the QB talk the Jets have for Trubisky, Kizer and Watson is to get the interest to trade back.... But with that said I still needed to state I don't want Kizer..... Honestly, I would take Trubisky, Watson, Mahomes, Webb, Petereman and Kaya before him...... I can see all of them with their flaws playing year 1... Him I cannot

Yea the Irish and the U are my teams I follow in college and the way Kizer plays with no energy, sense of urgency as a QB annoys me.

I do believe of the three QBs atop the draft boards, Kizer is more pro ready of the three... For a team looking to move up it would be for him, over Trubisky and/or Watson... A team like the Texans could be interested in making that move...

I'd be OK with Trubisky or Watson. Kizer? Not unless it's with the second round pick, or they traded up into the very late first.

I don't see Kizer as Pro Ready at all...Poor decision making, bad footwork, no sense of urgency in his play (especially late in games) I'm going out on a limb here but I see him dropping to RD2 POSSIBLY 3..

I don't believe any of the three are worth anything more than a 22nd overall selection...

I could agree with that... But 3 guys will go in the top 15 regardless.. Hopefully we can trade back... There has been talk The Bucs want to get into the top 10 for 1 of the 2 top backs... So that might be a good trade back partner.

one may go in the Top 15 but this is a defensive draft with only 5 worthy offensive players who will be taken in the Top 15 and it is too early to tell if the Browns will take a QB at 12... It is between 2 options Mahomes and Trubisky with Watson a long shot...

"IF" Jets draft a QB I'm fine with it as long as its in the 2nd round & they draft a QB with the least INT thrown in his College career. Sorry I dont like any of the Drafts QB's to take with the 6th pick in Draft. 2nd round Jets should take a QB this year & take a QB every year until they get it right! I dont know why its so hard for my Jets to draft a QB & not get it right in over 50 years. Jets , JETS PUT AWAY THE DART BOARD & WATCH FILM ON ALL THE QB'S! Jets take the best player on the board at 6th. First 3 rounds are must play impact players so quit wasting our Draft like you have the last 7 years other than Williams who was the best player in the Draft.

Agreed... my preference this year is to trade out of 6 and get another 2nd or 3rd pick and trade Richardson for another 2nd or 3rd pick and have these picks and the position I wuld look to draft

1st Rd - CB
2nd Rd - Edge Rusher
2nd Rd Via one of the trades - TE
3rd Rd - RB
3rd Rd Via one of the trade - WR
3rd Rd Comp Pick - OL
5th Rd - ILB
6th Rd - CB
7th Rd - OL

won't get anything more than a 4th for Sheldon as two teams have already offered said mid round selection to trade for Richardson... Keeping him for 2017 will likely give us a 3rd round compensatory selection after he leaves next off season... I also think unless a team is willing to give a conditional 2018 pick on performance, etc it might be worth more to us then either of those options...

do believe the jets will make a trade out of the 6th overall two likely scenarios:

1) Saints now own 2 1st Rounds their 11th & the Patriots 32nd both would be welcomed for our 6th...
2) as I reported awhile ago is the Cardinals want to trade up... 13 & 45 would be suffice for the move...

Scenario 1 could open the door to draft both CB & MLB (Obi Melifonwu & Raekwon McMillan) would fill two major holes on revamping our defense... Also allow us to use our 2nd on a player like Takarist McKinley, or T.J. Watt...

Scenario 2 could open another trade down from low teen to a team targeting one of the top three quarterbacks while it could then consider taking an offensive weapon (O.J. Howard, Corey Davis, Dalvin Cook) For me those players/prospects are good but there is so much talent in the mid rounds that we should target...

Too many possibilities...

Mac always investigates to 10 players in depth. You never know who will be in front of you when you pick. You need quality Intel to pick a guy, not pick a guy, or negotiate a trade.

Due diligence. I'm intrigued by Watson at 6, otherwise the serious plan has to be develop hack or draft darnold. That means preparing an offense for a young starter next year.

If your target to turn up your quality of play is next year, what positions/players need a year to mature vs what positions cab a rookie thrive in?
