Linebacker David Harris has always been one of the most consistent middle linebackers in the history of the New York Jets. Can he keep it up this upcoming season?

The New York Jets made a smart move when they drafted linebacker David Harris in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft. He’s been one of the most consistent players for the team.

However, Harris is 33 years old, and he is entering his 10th year in the NFL. Some people wonder if Harris can perform at the same level in 2017. Well, the answer is probably not. Harris broke the consistency last season, as he only had 67 tackles and half a sack. His age definitely showed in his speed, footwork, and pursuit.

New York has added a lot of depth to the linebacker position and it’s probably because they know that Harris is getting old. The fast pace of the NFL seems to be getting too fast for him. If the team wants to keep him on for the last year of his contract, then they should use him as a mentor for the younger guys.

Young linebackers like Darron Lee and Jordan Jenkins could learn a lot from Harris in their second year with this team. They could also pick up a younger middle linebacker in free agency to compete with Lee for the starting spot.

Harris’ time as the Jets’ starting middle linebacker has likely come to an end. If they are willing to keep him on as a mentor, and Harris is willing to take on that role, then all is well.

The bottom line is that he’s got the wisdom and ability to be a great mentor, but he is simply too old to compete for a starting spot in this league. Sorry Mr. Harris, but it happens to the best of them.

That's the most times I've seen the word mentor in a story.

If the team sticks to a 4-3 defense, he might have some value in the middle as a run stopper, because he wouldn't have to run too much. But the more the team plays a 3-4, the more his value declines - sharply.

Fair point. Harris has no value anymore. He lacks the speed to be successful. Hopefully, he is used as a mentor to help our young LBs.

i read that the team waived Julian Stanford. One less LB on this team. We have a lot of holes!
