VCU basketball player-turned-TE Mo Alie-Cox visiting Jets

The Jets are thinking outside the box to try to help fix their dilemma at tight end.

Virginia Commonwealth University basketball player Mo Alie-Cox is visiting the Jets facility on Friday, according to a source.

The 6-6, 262-pound Alie-Cox, who hasn’t played football since his freshman year in high school, worked out as a tight end for NFL scouts in Richmond, Va., earlier this week. Alie-Cox’s athleticism has intrigued plenty of clubs, but it’s no secret that the Jets have the most dire tight end situation in the league.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who had 10 receptions for 110 yards in seven games last season, is the team’s best option at the moment. (Seferian-Jenkins will be suspended for the first two games of 2017, by the way).

Tight ends were non-factors in two seasons with Chan Gailey. New offensive coordinator John Morton is expected to get them more involved.

Could Alie-Cox, who averaged 9.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and two blocks for VCU last season, make a successful transition from hoops to the gridiron like Antonio Gates or Jimmy Graham?

Time will tell.

It may be possible that the Jets have had the most dire tight end situation in the history of the human race. And it was compounded by an offensive coordinator who didn't know the position existed.

Miami TE David Njoku Cancels Visit With Giants, Will Meet With Jets Monday

Jordan Raanan of ESPN reports that Miami TE David Njoku has canceled his previously scheduled visit with the Giants and will instead meet with the Jets on Monday.

Njoku has taken pre-draft visits to a number of teams, including the Buccaneers, Panthers, Browns, and Dolphins.

Njoku, 20, is widely considered a first-round talent and one of the top tight ends in this year’s draft class. During his two-year college career at Miami, he caught 64 receptions for 1,060 yards receiving and nine touchdowns.

Gareon Conley set to visit Jets on Monday

Gareon Conley will be one of two Ohio State cornerbacks attending the draft in Philadelphia this year and he’ll be a fairly short drive away from the city on Monday.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Conley will visit with the Jets at their facility in Florham Park, New Jersey. Conley joins teammate Marshon Lattimore, LSU’s Tre’Davious White, Washington’s Kevin King, USC’s Adoree’ Jackson and Colorado’s Chidobe Awuzie as cornerbacks scheduled to attend a draft that’s generally rated as very strong at the position.

Lattimore is usually at the top of the rankings for those players, but Conley isn’t seen as too far behind his fellow Buckeye and is widely expected to be off the board in the first round. Those projections don’t usually have him going as high as No. 6, but he could be a more realistic option for the Jets if they are able to trade down from their original slot.

Ohio State safety Malik Hooker is also expected to be drafted early on April 27, although he won’t be joining Conley and Lattimore in Philadelphia.

The New York Jets will meet with former California Golden Bears quarterback Davis Webb this week, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan.

Webb, 22, threw for 4,295 yards, 37 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in his senior season with Cal. In his four-year college career, which includes three seasons at Texas Tech, he threw for 9,852 yards, 83 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.

Webb, a 6-foot-5, 229-pound quarterback, has drawn comparisons to Brock Osweiler, according to his NFL.com draft profile page.

"He obviously is going to need coaching after being in those offenses at Texas Tech and Cal," one AFC scout told NFL.com. "I think he has enough between the ears to unlearn some of his bad habits and start to get things right. I see another Nick Foles if you give him time to develop."

LB Foster visits Jets, Ravens up next

Alabama LB Reuben Foster visited the New York Jets for a pre-draft visit on Monday and will visit the Baltimore Ravens for a pre-draft visit early next week.

Foster has already visited the Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals. The Jets pick No. 6 overall while the Ravens own the No. 16 selection. The five most recent NFL.com mock drafts project Foster to go between No. 9 and No. 15 overall. The 6-foot, 229-pound Foster led the Crimson Tide with 115 tackles, 13 TFL and five sacks last season. We've heard conflicting reports regarding the recent medical recheck of Foster's surgically repaired shoulder. Don't be surprised if he requires an additional surgery.
