Here's what the Jets are hoping for, historically speaking:

... and IMO this draft is only a success if they get it.

2010 Draft -- Seattle Seahawks

When they took Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor in the same class.

At the very least they are hoping to pull off what the Seahawks did in 2010.

OR

1981 Draft -- SF 49ers

When they took Ronnie Lott, Eric Wright and Carlton Williamson all in the same draft.

If they hit on both Safeties and one of their gambles on BIG CORNERS late in the draft hits pay dirt, they are hoping to duplicate the 81' 49ers.

Look, its a long shot, thats why I can only think of two examples, though I suspect there are others, but thats what they had in mind here and IMO this draft is only a success if they pull it off, which is possible, it can happen, its happened before and it can happen again, but its a tall order.

I hope it does work. Unless it works like the Seahawks, the Jets will regret not taking Cook.

Incidentally both the 49ers and Seahawks won SB's, and a big part of the reason was these two drafts.

In fact, and I always believed this is one of the most underrated facts in the history of the NFL, the 49ers won their first SB immediately following the 81' draft and they did it with all three rookies starting in their secondary; Lott, Wright and Williamson ... the forth was Dwight Hicks who was drafted a few years prior.

At the time (still is?) it was the youngest starting secondary in the history of the NFL to win a Super Bowl, and the only time a team won the Super Bowl with three rookies starting in their secondary ... and they were a strength for the 49ers that year, not just along for the ride.

LOL Point taken!

But that was before Montana was considered an immortal and before he had his best offensive teams with guys like Rice, John Taylor, Roger Craig and Brent Jones.

None of those guys were there in 81', he was throwing to Dwight Clark and Freddie Solomon and an aging Russ Francis, and his RB's you'd have a hard time naming unless you are a real football junkie. The strength of their first SB team was their defense more than their offense.

And don't forget Richard Sherman the following season. He had a little to do with them winning it all, in a route no less. But I do get your point. IMO, this team is still too talent deprived in areas like OL and QB. But this season could easily be much better than what I'm thinking. It all boils down to IMO, how well the OL holds up and what we get from Christian Hackenberg. Those two areas are the big wild card assuming the team stays pretty much injury free.

It's hard to think this isn't a very good draft given how deep it was, Mac's willingness to stick to the BPA mentality, and all the trade downs Mac made late in the draft. They went into the draft thinking they had 6 picks and they came out with 9 players and some optimism for sure.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think Mac would go get replacements for Devin Smith, Calvin Pryor, and Marcus Gilchrist, but it seems he may have done exactly that? He also went against the big picture in drafting. When you are building a team from scratch you most normally start from the inside and build outward. That really wasn't an option in this draft. It was too thin on OL. So Mac went where the talent was.

However, rebuilding the team becomes much harder from here on out. It's easy to think there won't be another draft like this one any time soon? They will have specific needs going forward and there won't always be decent free agents to get in FA. Mac won't have the luxury of being able to go BPA. He could still stick to that philosophy, but it may take a lot of trading down or up.

All in all, I don't think this is very good team in 2017, but there's no reason not to be optimistic going into the future.........

I love the Adams and Maye pick.... If we Mo bounces back and Rogers doesn't scheme like a moron... This defense should easily be back in the top 10 if not better.

This team wasn't getting fixed in one offseason... If Hack or Petty fail next years draft is setup up nicely to fill QB, RB, LB. Though I think we should have taken an edge rusher this year. Next years class is weak. As of now
