Should the Jets retire #24?

as many of you have heard, Claiborne wanted to wear that # but the jets didn't allow him.

Do you want to see Revis jersey up on the ring of honor?

Yes. Yes he was horrible last year, and even in his prime he was a true mercenary who was concerned with himself first and team second. Clearly the annual contract battles soured many Jets fans including myself, but there is no denying his excellence. He was probably one of the top 3 Jets of all time, and will be a hall of fame inductee.

It a shame some/most of us don't have a very positive feeling for Revis based on how good he was in his prime (top five CB of all time). So many NY superstars like Jeter, Messier, Rivera, Martin, etc. were beloved and I'm not sure Revis is one of them. Agree with 15 above that his "me" attitude and his lack of effort last year soured many including myself. We should be celebrating instead of questioning whether his number should be retired. Ugh!

I think the Jets should "hold out" on that one for a while.

i agree almost word for word..

i'll have to ask you to take my word but i defended the hell out of revis at JI when he was one of the best players in the league..

but he wasn't just horrible last year, he absolutely seemed indifferent.. in my eyes anyway.. to me, that's an absolute slap in the face to the franchise that drafted him (& overpaid to get back) & as a former staunch supporter, i no longer give a shit one way or the other if they retire "24.."

Ring of honor? Yes.

Retired? Not sure of that.

So ring of honor doesn't mean your # is retired? I thought that was the case.

I'm okay with either or.

But it I agree with 15 here. Revis in prime was great but he's selfish so he won't be beloved like all other great NY players. That's on him.

No. Freeman McNeil wore #24, and he is in the Ring of Honor, but Revis went on to wear #24.

The only retired numbers are:

12-Namath
13-Maynard
28-Martin
73-Klecko
90-Byrd

Weeb is part of that group, though as a coach and without a number.

But there are several other guys in the Ring of Honor whose numbers still circulate:

24-McNeil
32-Boozer
41-Snell
60-Grantham
75-Hill
80-Chrebet
81-Philbin
85-Walker
88-Toon
93-Lyons
99-Gastineau

I think that's all, but I might have missed a few. Those numbers are still in use, even though the guys are in the Ring of Honor.

it's funny, i absolutely associate "24" more with mcneil than revis..

we all know how great revis was in his prime but mcneil is still the most dynamic jet RB i've ever watched play..

his running style was smooth as ice.. IMO, the only thing that kept free out of the hall was freak injuries..

thoughts sack??

I very much agree. For one, McNeil was dynamic, and to be honest, outside of Jets circles he's underrated, sort of like Klecko. I still think of the old 80s style kelly green jerseys, and his is one of the first to come to mind. Perhaps more importantly, he spent his entire career with the Jets. More than 10 years a Jet.

Agree about McNeil, just a great RB that was very exciting to watch. Totally forgot that he was #24.

For me, Revis spoiled it all by going to the Cheaters....and there's a chance he might go back there.

So for me, it's no, no, and hell no...

Definitely. Revis is legitimately the best player the Jets have ever had hands down. He's a first ballot hall of famer aside from anything the Jets do.

not much to disagree with your post..

still, revis has done absolutely nothing to be an all time fan favorite..

his effort level last season was shameful.. so was bowles trotting him out there, watching him get his ass lit up game after game..

will Revis ask for a licensing payment for use of his name on the ring of honor?

Is Revis the best Jets player ever? I could honestly make a case for Klecko.

agreed..

ironically, revis is probably a lock for the hall & perhaps a first ballot guy..

where as klecko essentially has no shot left.....

Isn't that sad? Klecko absolutely deserves it. His career was phenomenal. Versatile, tough, played a long time, all but his last with the Jets.

Two separate things 13. Being a fan favorite has nothing to do with his on the field achievements. Him joining the ring of honor is all about what he did on the field. On that end, it's unquestionable.

If the ring of honor was all about fan favorites, Wayne Chrebet would have gone the very day after his career was over.

he was also one strongest guys of his era.. functional "NFL" strength..

& yes it is sad, the guy deserves to be in the hall.. klecko wasn't good he was great..
