After the punches were thrown, Todd Bowles didn’t pull any back.

“A little sluggish, a little sloppy,” Bowles said of his team’s Monday workout. “Hard, but not smart.”

A skirmish erupted during a team period as OLB Lorenzo Mauldin, returning to full participation, squared off against LT Kevin Beachum. Punches were thrown, but there was no damage to either man with helmets covering their heads.

“It’s football. There are a lot of guys pushing each other around, so I just got a little frustrated and we paid for it by running gassers,” said Mauldin.

Bowles wasn’t about to let things escalate. He ordered all his players to line up and run after Mauldin and Beachum were separated.

“They need to know why they’re running. They need to take onus on themselves,” he said. “If they have energy to scuffle, they have energy to run. If you have energy to scuffle and run, then you should have energy to practice.”

The paced picked up from there, but Bowles was not happy with the overall execution following the off day. Beachum noted this was the second time the Jets had come out slow following a day off.

“Guys have to come in more focused, understanding what’s at hand, understanding what’s the urgency right now,” he said.

But there will be no hard feelings as the Green & White continue to move ahead.

“It’s part of training camp. It is what it is,” Beachum said of the fisticuffs. “We have to go back in the locker room and get into the cold tub together, so we’ll be just fine.”

Forté Taking It Slow
Veteran RBs Matt Forté (hamstring) and Bilal Powell (neck) participated in individual drills but were again held back in team situations. Bowles said both are expected to do a little more on Tuesday if there are not setbacks.

“It’s feeling good. Not good enough to be in full practice yet, so I’m just kind of going through what the trainers tell me and easing back in. I don’t want to go back out there immediately and injure it again,” said Forté, who was slowed by a tight hamstring to the same leg last year. “Hamstrings are tricky. I had one last year and came back out to practice and ended up injuring it. That’s why it took multiple weeks to let it heal, so I guess that was something to learn from. This year, I have to definitely let it heal up all the way so I can get out there and not have any setbacks.”

Ground Gains
After being held to56 yards on 31 carries vs. the Titans, Beachum said the Jets have to be more effective on the ground.

“It’s really just being more efficient in the run game, kind of let guys slip off here and there,” he said. “We could have done a better job of sustaining blocks. We have to find a way to run the ball more efficiently.”

thanks for the update G..

not exactly the lion share of first team snaps i was hoping for..

mccown, who for whatever reason is already the de facto starter.. why does he need to eat up that many first team snaps when saturday clearly will be the closest thing hackenberg gets as an audition for the starting job?? my thoughts anyway.. we'll see if i'm on the money with coach bowles' "open three man QB" competition soon enough.....

Seems to me that the CS is bringing Hack along at a responsible pace, letting the kid grow into the position and not forcing anything. The 1st game was a perfect example of building a foundation of success, and not trying to do too much. I think most forget that Hack is still only 22 years old.

he's also a 2nd rounder in year two that didn't get a regular season snap last season.. not one..

you think the coaching staff/bowles is doing right by the kid & i think bowles is holding him back.. why?? because my guess is he believes mccown helps him keep this job or gets another one..

IMO, to not give hackenberg a legitimate chance to win the job, this week/saturday would absolutely self serving on bowles' part..

Well let's see, The Jets went from reports last year that Hack couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. He had a terrible preseason so the Jets took it slow, watch the game from the sidelines while trying to rebuild his mechanics. Use the offseason to work on your mechanics and reading defenses while learning a brand new offense. An offense that McCown already knows.
Reports are that Hack has looked much better in OTA's and now in training camp he is coming along with his reads and mechanics. The ball is coming out with accuracy and velocity.
He comes into the first preseason game with the ones for s series and then the two's. He completes over 70% of his passes, no interceptions. There was a fumbled snap but that could've been a miscommunication. He has clearly shown progress from last year.
Now,i'm reading It's not enough, his passes were all dinks and dunks. He missed his two long balls. When he was scrambling from a blitz he didn't find his open receiver, which was across the feild and would've been an impossible throw. He didn't score a touchdown. There was a lot of reasons that there wasn't a touchdown scored when Hack was QBing. Let's forget about the fact the Jets had absolutely no running game, None. There were penalties and dropped passes that negated or negatively affected drives.
The same way that roughing the passer penalty helped McCown and the offense score their TD.
As long as Hackenberg is showing steady progress from week to week , the coaching staff is doing it's job. He'll get his shot with the ones but he probably won't be fully ready to take over the starting job until a few weeks into the season. By week six or seven when McCown plays like, well McCown and the Jets are 1 and 5. That's when the reins will be handed to Hackeberg and the Jets will find out if he can blossom into a franchise QB or its 2018 draft pick.

I agree with most of what you've said. A few things, on his scramble from the blitz, I was there, he wasn't looking down field, he was focused on the sidelines, the receiver was running in front of him after he broke off his coverage, it would've been a throw on the run, but in my opinion, it was a makeable throw for a quarterback. That aside, and its not a huge deal, he could've been told to be super conservative. My only question is half a season enough to evaluate him? if we go by your scenario and we hand him the reins at 1-5 or 1-6, there is only half a season left and we are already out of it. What kind of team is around him and how motivated are they? If we are a BAD 1-5 or 1-6 could we have fired Bowles and now that's an issue and distraction. I think a lot goes into his evaluation this year, it has to, because they have to decide if skipping on of the draft prospects is plausible based on what is shown. That decision can be franchise altering!

I'm with you USANYJ, I guess it all depends on how Hack plays in those 10, 11 games. if he is continually getting better week after week and in the preseason games but is just not ready yet for week one but they start him anyway would that skew the whole process? i think we have all seen what happens to young QB's that have all the physical ability but were thrown into the fire too soon and, i believe, they never recovered.I really don't know the right or wrong way to do it but i've seen the hurry up and play part and that hasn't worked for the Jets.

Right, there is no exact science to it. Rodgers waited 3 years behind favre. Sanchez was thrown to the fire and went to two title games. Obviously he never developed. Could he have with time? Maybe. Pennington sat for a while and I consider his career a success. Put him on those title game teams under rex ryan and I think we may have taken a title one of those years. There is just so much banking on next years draft with 3 solid prospects at the qb position. Darnold the main one in my opinion. I guess bringing him along at his own pace is whats best, but is there enough time? That remains to be seen.

agreed..

with the QBs at the top of the '18 draft, we don't have the luxury of waiting until hackenberg gets his shot week 6 or 7..

from an organization standpoint, if the plan is absolutely to give the kid more than a handful of starts, i don't see the downside of playing him week one if he continues to practice well & keeps improving in the preseason..

on the other hand, i see almost no upside in sitting him close to half the season..

lets wait to see how better or stagnant Hackenberg plays when he has a RB like Bilal Powell in the backfield... McCown only had one drive and was rewarded with Robby Anderson deep, who knows what would of happened if he had more drives... Don't get me wrong McGuire showed some oomph, but with penalties calling back both of his long runs it didn't help out the offense one bit in continuous forward production...

prediction: Hackenberg lets it rip to one or both Robby Anderson and/or Chris Harper deep against Detroit... also expect to see more of Ross Martin after the bungle training camp Catanzaro has been showcasing...

Reading tweets from todays practice at ganggreennation.com.It looks like Hacked had more reps with the ones for a second practice in a row. They stated that he also had another very good practice.Hopefully he shows enough by week one to start him and feel comfortable about it.Then they would have a whole season to see what he has. That would be best case scenario.

Its criminal what they have done to Petty.
they haven't done the kid any favors..

he out played smith in camp & preseason & still didn't win the backup job..

he had a terrific game against washington in the preseason & was rewarded with his reps getting cut dramatically the next week in camp..

he was allowed to to get the absolute hell beaten out of himself in the preseason game that ended up screwing up his throwing shoulder..

in his late season audition, he was given game plans slightly more advanced than the one we watched hackenberg run last saturday..

& now this completely disingenuous 3 man QB competition..

two different OCs durning this stretch.. one HC.....
