Taking a deeper look at the corner position, depth

We know one of two things there are clearly two starters on the roster, with a third in the nickel defense... Morris Claiborne only needs to stay healthy and he is the number one corner on the team that is a given... Some will debate should Buster Skrine be the number two or should the second year man from NC State Juston Burris be elevated to outside starting corner opposite Claiborne... Either way the Jets have some flexibility with these three and hopefully will bring some match up problems for opposing lineups...

Now the real question is how many corners should this team keep for the regular season? Currently we have nine on the roster vying with three spots taking and possibly only three spots available... Jeremy Clark is listed as active/non-football injury designation so as of now he isn't one of the nine...

So far during the off season one name has been popping up on a good note is four year man Dexter McDougle... McDougle also had a very good outing against the Tennessee Titans picking up three pass deflections... What I hear is the team really thinks there is something to Dexter, and believes he could carve out a serious role not only on special teams but as a situational corner... As of now his stock is rising, is it enough to grab one of the final three spots, maybe?

Another name running across the media, is rookie Derrick Jones a sixth round draft selection has the height and length that head coach Todd Bowles prefers in his man press cover corners... To date he has had a solid campaign but he is only a rookie with upside... If he can snap a role on special teams he could be the final corner to make the final cut...

Third year corner Darryl Roberts is in jeopardy of not making the cut, even tho the coaching staff believes he has potential and love his vertical speed... As we saw against the Titans his technique is less to be desired, so it will come down to if the team can figure how to utilize him will be the only determination if he is worthy of a active roster spot... He could be a candidate for the practice, which he is still eligible but getting him there will be problematic with other teams looking to claim talent he would be a high priority for another squad...

Fourth year man, Marcus Williams like Darryl Roberts is in jeopardy of not making the cut, because of the talent across the board he is on the outside looking in... Now Marcus has shown potential but his speed is less to be desired... Williams is a ball hawk knowing when to take chances but with those chances his recovery speed is one of the worst on the team and his tackling technique still needs refinement... Williams needs to make a play, interception or forced fumble even recovery to get his stock up, expect him to improve his game play or he will be playing somewhere this season...

Another rookie turning heads in training camp is Xavier Coleman who did not play in game one of the preseason but is expected to make a real push for a roster spot... Coleman has plenty of experience in bump n run man press coverage that is ideal for a Kacy Rodgers defense... Coleman plays with great urgency in his coverage and has a history of ball production when he's challenged... He has adequate height and speed for the perimeter and has the awareness along with ball skills to play zone...

The last corner on the 90 man roster is Youngstown State's David Rivers at this point his best goal should be to make the practice squad... Rivers has the length and is a pretty smooth athlete, but his lack of ball production and physicality needs to be refined...

Overall Prediction for this position:

CB 1 Morris Claiborne
CB 2 Buster Skrine
CB 3 Juston Burris
CB 4 Dexter McDougle
CB 5 Derrick Jones
CB 6 Xavier Coleman

by chance with keep a 7th

CB 7 Marcus Williams

as of right now that is how it looks from the outside in, things could change and injuries may happen (knock on wood)...

I like Skrine as the nickel, honestly. And Williams impressed me a couple years ago with a ridiculous number of INTs, but he needs to step up more. I'd like to see him remain on the roster, if possible.

Burris has done a lot. Has he earned that starting role? Perhaps. I think Skrine is steadier, but I also think Skrine thrives in the nickel role, whereas he is a downgrade as a #2. Burris is more suited to either start or not be in the packages at all.

I don't have any faith in Skrine as the number 2. In the slot is where he belongs. Burris is a totally unproven commodity. I hear nothing good coming from TC and yet him, just like Shell, two totally unproven commodities get starting jobs?! It makes me wonder if Mac has an ounce of common sense about him?

This could end very badly for Mac. They could fail Adrien Clarke style? If they do? The fan base might never forgive that move. But for me, I spent the last two off seasons criticizing his pure incompetence. If not for the draft in April, which I thought Mac did really well getting a lot of young talent for the team, I would be wanting him fired.

All I can say is if this draft ends up being as bad as the 2016 draft (it won't. That draft is 1000 times better than that journey man garbage he got in 2016), the fan base will have his head on a stake.

You guys seem to be forgetting #27 Darryl Roberts ... who looked good last year and is getting a serious look in camp.

I did not, last year was last year:

Coleman has a bone bruise...

Ok, Thank u
Marcus Williams better pick it up or he maybe the odd man out.
The one thing about McDougle I'm having a slight problem with is the Kyle Wilson act after a ball is thrown in his direction. Other than that he has picked up his game.

he also lost weight and body fat entering this training camp making him quicker with a better change of direction in his technical prowess...

CB 1 Morris Claiborne got beat like a drum last night. I thought #24 was back out there, sigh.

Preseason game three would love to see Juston Burris and Buster Skrine along with Dexter McDougle start... Let Claiborne come in against the 2s and 3s to see if he can compete with them, because so far this preseason he has been awful... Now there are some outside receivers like Brandon Marshall that Buster Skrine could compete with physically and because they are quicker than fast... At the same time someone like ODB Jr. would be a perfect test to see if McDougle really improved his game all around... Burris we know what his limitations are so safety help over the top will be needed as the third corner on the field...

He'll be fine... His play has always been consistently good... His health is the problem... It's always been consistently bad.... Not gonna let last nights game change anything...That kid when healthy will be fine.
