Preseason Game Thread: Jets Return to Lions' Den

It was a simple question, but it's one Jets head coach Todd Bowles answered differently his first two Augusts on the job, since he had a more veteran team both years than he does now:

What are you looking for in this year's second preseason game than in the opener?

"I'd like to see them just sharp on assignments, everybody getting on the same page, and some continuity, starting to jell on gameday," Bowles said ahead of Saturday night's game against the Lions in Detroit. "I'd like to see a little more effort out of certain guys on special teams that will show up, that are right on the bubble."

Here are this week's seven points to ponder ahead of the Jets' semiannual (lately) summer visit to Ford Field:

1. Which Trend Will Prevail?
If this is an odd-numbered year, the Jets are in line for a loss at the Lions. They opened the '13 and '15 preseasons there and suffered 26-17 and 23-3 defeats, with the latter dropping the Jets' summer record at Detroit to 0-3. Yet if a conflicting preseason trend means anything, the Jets will get the road win. Ever since 2011, the Green & White have streaked through their summer skeds — 2 straight wins followed by 6 straight losses, 5 wins, 3 losses, 4 wins, 3 losses. Thus last Saturday's 7-3 win over Tennessee needs a companion W.

2. Hack Report
This could be a big night for Christian Hackenberg, whenever he comes in. Jets fans want to see him get off his point-less schneid — after engineering a TD and FG in his first two drives as a pro last summer, his preseason offenses have gone 24 consecutive series without a score (eight vs. the Titans). But he was also 7-for-9 on third-down passing vs. the Titans and has show his bigger arm, pocket maneuverability and confidence this month. "He took care of the ball," OC John Morton said. "I thought he was accurate. I thought he did a really nice job."

3. Matt Loves NYJ
Matt Stafford seems to enjoy playing the Green & White. Mixing those proverbial apples and oranges, he's started four games vs. the Jets (two RS, two PS), the Lions have won the last three, and in the four games combined he's thrown 5 TD passes to no INTs and has a 107.7 passer rating. His backups are Jake Rudock and 21-year-old sixth-rounder Brad Kaaya. If Kaaya looks familiar in the game, he's not only been getting great tutoring from the Lions' 29-year-old starter but four years ago he was playing "Madden" as Stafford.

4. First Line of Defense
The Jets' first D-line had only one of last week's eight sacks and yielded 27 yards on five carries. Nevertheless, Lions coach Jim Caldwell said the Muhammad Wilkerson-Sheldon Richardson-Leonard Williams unit has his attention. "It'll be a great test for us because they're a talented bunch up front and they do some things where they line up and they isolate you. ... They have some guys that can rush the passer and they're very good against the run, so it'll be a great test for us." As in let's keep the pocket clean for "The Franchise," guys.

5. Secondary vs. Detroit's WRs
The Jets defenders get no trophies for their 10 PDs vs. the Titans. On the other hand, it's a positive step for a secondary that last broke up 10 passes in a preseason game in 2013 and last regular season unofficially had an NFL-low 54 PDs. Now come the Lions, with Stafford throwing to rookie Kenny Golladay, who caught two TDs in the Lions' opener vs. the Colts, and vets Marvin Jones (4 TD catches @ CIN in '13) and Golden Tate (TD catch and TD pass @ SEA in '12), who've burned the Jets before. It's time for the Green & White to giddyup.

6. Catching Up with Old Friends
The Jets have four players who once played for the Lions: QB Josh McCown (of course — hasn't he played for every NFL team now?) and LBs Julian Stanford, Freddie Bishop and Corey Lemonier. The Lions have two ex-Jets on their roster but the Jets might see neither. One is the bearded LB and special-teams ace Nick Bellore, who left for the 49ers in 2015. The other is DL Kerry Hyder, who was on the Jets' 2014 practice squad. But Hyder (team-high 8 sacks in '16) is gone for the year with an Achilles injury and Bellore had been sidelined with a camp ding.

7. Special(s) Night
The Jets special teams will be worth keeping an eye, and not just because the HC said so. Coordinator Brant Boyer called the kicking competition between vet Chandler Catanzaro and first-year man Ross Martin "a dogfight." Both kicking indoors in this game might determine whether there'll be a flip in the depth chart to Martin-Catanzaro or not. And in the return game after Lucky Whitehead's foot injury, could the kick and/or punt man be Frankie Hammond? Romar Morris? Marcus Murphy? Maybe even Chris Harper? It's up for grabs.

for me, the lions game is all about how much of a chance hackenberg is afforded to win the job..

that said, i don't believe mccown can play poorly enough to not be named the week one starter sometime early next week..

LOLz after further review, all i'm doing is setting myself up for inevitable disappointment..

thanks coach bowles..

what I expect is to see Hackenberg get the start, with Bilal Powell in the backfield in a limited role... I also want to see more of Jenkins and Leggett even Vander Laan in the offense... We know what we have in Robby Anderson, we need to know more about Chris Harper, Ardarius Stewart and Chad Hansen... Jalin Marshall needs reps along with Charone Peake but to me these two aren't important for this offense right now... We kinda know what we have with both of them...

defensively not worried would like to see more aggression from the rookie safeties but otherwise kinda pleased on how they performed week one...

want to see Ross Martin take this competition...

If Hack gets the start, it tells me that they are not only giving him every legimate opportunity to win the starting but possibly thinking about it. Depending ofcourse on how he does in this game, next game and what he has done so far. McCown hasn't had a bad training camp or pre-season but what else would you expect from a 15 year-38 year old guy. This isn't a surprise, it's the real game action where he shits the pan or is below average or is just to average to truly depend on. This is Hack's opportunity throughout the training camp and the pre-season games to see if he can challenge McCown. Whether he starts or not, he will play a lot so this is all on him. If he starts then McCown will probably not play this game period. So if Hack doesn't win the starting job, he doesn't have anyone to blame but himself IMO. He played three quarters the 1st pre-season game. The next three games won't be any different, whether he starts or not.

this inevitability will be another almost annual showing of the theatre of the absurd..

who's kidding who?? bowles was going to start the season with any veteran QB maccagnan brought in.. that being the case, maccagnan deserves his fair share of blame as well.. what made him think either of his kids would get a chance to start under this HC?!

LOLz a full blowb rebuild with with two or three blue chip QB prospects, with a HC trying his best not to draft any of them.. you can't make this shit up..

Lol, agreed!!! Sad part is, whether TB is on the chopping block or not, with this youth movement in full blown mode, what do they expect but a losing season anyway??? With that said, they might as well start Hack with the other youngsters to see if he can grow with the team but of course TB won't. Hack will play probably in games 8-10 until the end of the season. What's the point in that when the team will be 2-6 or 2-8 by then? If that's the case, the Jets can lose just as well with Hack. So why not play him from game one??? Here's another thought and it may be a long shot but it is possible, if Hack did play the full year he may just prove to be worthy of keeping and not drafting one of these QBs coming out. Then they can draft that blue chip oline men, WR or RB we so desperately will need.

Starting Hack week one would be a complete injustice and not prove anything. The offensive line is terrible. Neither center vying for the job would even make backup on most teams. LT is a complete crap shoot. No idea what to expect from RT. Not one receiver on this team would be a #2 or even a #3 on virtually any other team. Tight Ends? What are they? Running backs have talent but no line to block for them.

With this roster the only way they can even hope to move the ball is through smoke and mirrors. I haven't given up on Hack but to throw him out there day 1 is insane.

Well in that case don't play the kid at all this year. This team is in full youth movement mode and what's here is what's here. So either can make it work with what he has or he can't. Same with Mccown or Petty. So should they let him sit another year because the team isn't fit for him to play with and be concerned he may get hurt or not show his true potential or regress emotional? No disrespect but that's BS!!!

Hack say all last year. It's time to see what this kid can do and it doesn't matter who's on the field with him. He will be on the field with 10 others guys that are NFL players. So either he has it or he doesn't!!! How long are they supposed to let this kid sit before he gets his shot? They, we and everyone else needs to stop making excuses for him and put him in the fire. He sat last year which was frustrating but understood. He's shown improvement this year and now he shouldn't start the season because the team is garbage. The team isn't going to get no better most likely this year so when should he play?

This offense will not be good this year but it should get better as the year goes on. The O-line will not be good but hopefully will gel somewhat as the year goes on. Hopefully one or two of the young receivers (I'm hoping it's Stewart) and ASJ should contribute. At that point, I would throw Hack in there. It won't be ideal but it would give him a chance to show something.

I see what your saying but its put up or shut up time IMHO. If I was the HC and trust me I know I'm not, it's time to get yo ass out there on the field and show me something good or bad and that starts from game one. It's time to stop Fing around and play some damn football. You sat the entire year and showed improvement this year so show me something that will make me want to keep you. There are 2-4 blue chip QBs waiting to be drafted so if you want to be the starting QB for the New York Jets, get yo ass on the damn field and prove it. Show everyone and yourself that your worth the wait and we don't have to wait anymore because come next draft, if you don't show me something I'm not waiting anymore.

i read it 82, & if only, right??

i'm so sick of coach bowles.....
TB is definitely twisting the damn nerves to no end. Makes me wonder if he knows he's getting fired regardless, is he going to try and pull a Rex Ryan fuck you number and win as many games as he can to screw us out of that top draft pick. I believe that was the Jamies Winston and Marcus Marietta draft.

yep, it was the winston, marietta draft..

the theatre of the absurd never gets old with this organization..

the cherry on top of what would be that ass backward sundae would be, for the powers that be to sit on there hands & watch bowles play mccown until we are mathematically eliminated playoffs..

Lol, agreed!!! If they allow TB to destroy their draft hopes. While still no making the playoffs and not get a true look at what Hack can truly do because he either didn't play enough games or didn't play in any meaningful games, then their fucking idiots!!! Sad part about is, TB maybe an idiot for his overall coaching but if he screws up the Jets chances of getting the #1 pick and we still don't find out what Hack is all about, that probably won't be a stupid move on his part. It most likely will be a spiteful-go fuck yourself move like Rex Ryan did us.
