After 19 Practices and 2 Games, the Green & White Officially Broke Camp Thursday

Bowles Sets the Tone
First-year head coach Jets head coach Todd Bowles faced adversity early in camp and he never blinked. Bowles, who opted to have his players practice at the hottest time of the day and stopped one workout to make them run after two minor skirmishes, is creating a culture based on accountability and chemistry.
“It doesn’t discourage you as a coach. It makes you stronger. It makes you give statements to players,” he said of a pair of well-publicized off-the-field incidents. “It makes them understand the rules clearer and hopefully they learn from other people’s mistakes.”

Fitzpatrick Takes Command
After a locker room altercation left Geno Smith with a broken jaw, the Jets turned to Ryan Fitzpatrick.
“After being traded from Houston to here, I didn’t know if I’d ever find myself in a position to start game again,” Fitzpatrick said. “I understand that the opportunities are few and far between and I understand that my time in this league is probably limited in terms of getting these opportunities, so I’m going to take advantage of every single day and every single rep that I get out there.”

Corner Issues Solved
On paper, the Jets possess one of the most talented corner groups in the NFL. Darrelle Revis, and Antonio Cromartie will man the outside, nickel corner Buster Skrine had an excellent camp and there is quality depth behind the trio including Marcus Williams, Darrin Walls and Dexter McDougle.

“We still have a lot to learn. We’re all older players, but we’re trying to build that chemistry too. But I feel like we are coming along,” Skrine said. “I feel like we can be a special group.”

Ivory & Powell Impress
The Jets, a club that finished 3rd in rushing last season, have a deep stable of backs. Both Chris Ivory, who raced for a 33-yard touchdown against the Falcons, and Bilal Powell, who is averaging 4.8 yards per carry this preseason, look ready for September.

“Those are two quality running backs. Those guys work hard,” Bowles said. “They keep their mouth shut, they keep their heads down. They block, they run inside, they run outside. I’m very pleased with both of them.”

Williams Making Headway
Defensive end Leonard Williams, whom the Jets selected No. 6 overall in the 2015 NFL Draft, started with the first-team on Day 1. In the club’s second preseason game, Williams collected five tackles, 1.5 sacks and a safety.
“The guy’s a beast man,” said NT Damon Harrison. “He’s an animal as you’ve seen in the last preseason game. He’s very agile for a big guy and he’s starting to pick up on things a whole faster than what we expected.”

Marshall Adding to Repertoire
Over the last three seasons, Brandon Marshall had 31 TD receptions. The 6’4”, 230-pound Marshall, who has recorded 100 catches in five seasons and topped the 1,000-yard mark in seven campaigns, continues to evolve.
“Now I have to get outside of my comfort zone and figure out different ways to win - I really believe that I’m better than I’ve ever been because of the competition every single day,” he said.

Wally Pipp Rule
Ninety years ago, Yankees first baseman Wally Pipp wasn’t feeling good and was replaced in the lineup by Lou Gehrig. The latter went on to play in 2,130 consecutive games. Injuries are a constant in the NFL and Bowles is clear on his injury philosophy.
“When somebody gets nicked up, it’s somebody else’s chance to make a play, to come in and prove themselves,” he said. “It’s the Wally Pipp rule.”

Wilkerson Returns to Action
Slowed by a tight hamstring for three weeks, DE Muhammad Wilkerson got the green light Sunday and is expected to start Saturday vs. the Giants.
“I need to catch-up a little bit, but it’s football,” he said. “This is what I love to do, so I just have to get caught up and I’ll do that.”

Young Spirits at Guard
James Carpenter, an unheralded signing in free agency, had a solid camp. The 6’5”, 321-pounder is not only a big man who enjoys contact, but he is fluid on the move. Meanwhile veteran Willie Colon, who began camp on PUP, embraced the competition at RG and is a fixture with the first-team offense.
“He brings a lot of toughness,” Bowles said of Colon. “So far he looks good, his knees have been holding up. He's been upbeat. He's one of the most talkative guys in camp. He makes every day festive and he plays like that. He's one of the older guys, but he's got one of the younger spirits.”

Petty Progresses
After an uneven performance in Detroit, rookie passer Bryce Petty rebounded with a solid outing in 30-22 win over the Falcons. Petty, a Baylor product who possesses excellent arm strength, has worked diligently throughout the summer.
“Last week, (I) had no idea what to expect, as far as the game goes, as far as myself personally, emotionally, how it would roll,” he said. “So I felt like coming into this week, I would have a better understanding of how things went down and how things worked. I felt a lot more comfortable out there.”

I hope Rontez Miles makes the team. Crack-addicted mother and incarcerated father.

And he's on the verge of making this team. He's had a very good TC. Please keep this man, Macc/Bowles. What a great story.

This guy reminds me of LaRon Landry. He hits like a break away train without breaks. He's been able to over come many issues (as previously stated) and injuries. He would be a great asset to this already well touted secondary.
