I figured for shits and giggles, why not start this topic. Until the season starts, these topics are pretty stale anyway so why not add another to the mix. The NFL is thinking about going this route anyway and unless the players association can rule against this just that much, it will happen. So I wanted to find out different opinions on it because this will obviously effect our team as well! On a more serious note my thoughts are they will eventually go to this soon enough because it's all about money at the end of the day, so why start this topic.
With that said, the players especially the starters are getting injured in these meaningless preseason games and they should do away with them period. If they keep them then they should go down to two pre-season games and not play the starters period. Those games should be strictly for back ups (and they should only be seeing minimal time), rookies (high draft picks, rounds 1-3 /same applies as the back ups), bubble players and others they know are getting cut, get the max playing time. If the starters do play it should be in one preseason game only for about a quarter at most but why even bother!
This of course should all go towards this 18 games season proposal. Go to 18 games with a additional bye week, increase the active rosters by 7-10 players and keep the practice squad players as well, increase their pay of course and go to only two pre-season games as I mentioned above. No need for the starters to be playing in preseason games at all! Instead of having the starters play in these meaningless preseason games, they can have a few more joint team practices where the same can be accomplished.
The bye weeks can go from weeks 5-8 with 8 teams having a bye week each of those weeks. All teams can then play weeks weeks 9-12. The bye weeks start again from 13-16, with the same 8 teams have the same bye week as weeks 5-8. All teams play weeks 17-20. Those additional two season games can be one team from each conference that you don't play the entire division. This will go off records matching of course. So if the Jets finished in 1st place they would play the other two 1st place teams anyway, so now they'll play the 4th place teams also. If they finished 2nd, they would play the 2nd and 3rd place teams.
One last thing, the playoffs should change to the 6th best win records get in. Take that divisional shit out because there are teams getting in that don't deserve to be there and teams that have won 10-11 games that don't because of a 8-8 or 7-8-1 division winner. Wild-card games, two best records get the bye weeks and the rest of the playoffs stay as it stands now. Thoughts!
