2014 rookie class

So I'm watching NFL Live on ESPN and their doing a segment in the dominance of the rookie WR class of 2014. I just can't believe that second, third rounders and undrafted guys were making major impacts for their teams and we didn't manage to draft not one game changing or average WR, NOT ONE! I just can't see how that is possible with 12 draft picks. Forget about all the money they had in FA. I'm just focusing on the draft right now.

I know some will say the Jets drafted three WRs and two suffered season ending injuries so how would we know what they would have done? Well I guess its just our bad luck! Second round WR Landry for the Miami caught 84 passes, Matthews for phila caught at least 60 (I believe), Adams, Robinson and Moncrief contributed bigtime for their teams and Lee came on strong in the end. Even undrafted WRs like Brown (I think he was undrafted) and Hurns contributed big time.

What hurts so much is all of these guys are second rounders and below to undrafted WRs, really-really! We won't even talk about the first rounders that are absolute monsters. All five of them. Hell, even Cooks for the Saints had 53 catches before he got hurt half way through the season. Beckham Jr caught 91 catches and didn't even play the first four games. I just can't believe with 12 drafts picks the Jets didn't get NOT ONE of these WRs. Un-be-freaking-lieveable!

Note: Excuse if I missed anyone and I'm sure I did!!!

Yep. Some are calling this the best WR class ever.

This is just one of the reasons that Idzik is unemployed, and will never be considered for a GM job again. Good news is, 2015 looks like a pretty good class of WR's also.

Hope Macc does better

i am not sure we struck out that bad...........alot had to do with coaching, lack of qb and just a lack of a headcoach IMO. I don't think we will really see our draft class until the new coaching staff works with them. You really think any of those wr's would of had that kind of impact with the shitty HC and lack of QB?

Any of the first rounders and I do believe were looking at 60 catches at least. Second rounders or worst I guess it all depends on how much they were on the field. Thise five first round WR'S I just can't believe that they wouldn't have done well. Even with Geno at QB last year.

I get your point, Geno sucked over the past two years. However, Decker caught 70 plus passes with horrid Geno. I think 81 in fact. So your telling me that Landry or Robinson or Adams for example couldn't have caught 50-60 passes? Come on now, Geno is bad but with more talent on the field it makes his job easier which could have made him some what better. As it would any QB.

Note: so you don't think Decker, Kerley, Robinson or Landry for a full season. Throw in the Harvin trade mid-season or not and you don't think Geno wouldn't have been better and the rookie WR wouldn't have been good enough for 50 catches at least?

*sigh* if the debacle of not landing a WR with that draft helped get idzik out of here sooner than later so be it..

i literally got angry just typing that..

This was the most frustrating part of last year's draft.

In the first round I wanted Dennard of Cooks in that order, and wanted no part of benjamin, but I am sure Benjamin was somewhere on our draft board. We could have gone rd 1 with Cooks or Benjamin, but passed on both...which is fine, because like I said, I wanted Dennard.

I think it was how we drafted later on that was frustrating.

I adored Moncreif in last year's draft. I might have taken him rd 2. That guy has size and speed, 6'2 220lbs 4.38 40 and was a big play waiting to happen in college (a bigger Coats WR Auburn from this years draft)...he was there for the picking.

51 - Loved Landry WR LSU who was there for the picking if he was properly assessed on your draft board. he was a first down machine at Miami (84 receptions, 48 first downs).

I think there was a lot of us high on Bruce Ellington who we passed on several times and dropped in the 9ers lap. I think we start seeing some things from him next year.

Allen Hurns Wr Miami is a WR for Jax no one even talks about that really stood out last year. When everyone was talking about Lee and Robinson from their draft class, it was Hurns who started, played the entire season, and led their team in receiving yards.

It was odd we didn't even consider trading up for a WR in any round? Should we have package some of our 12 picks to go up and get Evans or Beckham, maybe trade up for Lee in rd 2, trade up to 2 from 3 for Robinson, from rd 4 to 3 for Moncreif...why not make some moves to get 1 WR target? So frustrating. Evans struggled all camp and Saunders was cut after 1 mistake. All very odd.

Not only that, 55, but then Idzik didn't have roster space for all 12 of his picks anyway, and lost two of them (Jeremiah George and Brandon Dixon) when he tried to cut them and move them to the practice squad. Really poor management of resources there. The guy just didn't have a feel for the job, it would seem. Oh well. Time to move on.

That was the infuriating part, for me at least. I was happy to see Idzik hired, or at least Mike gone. When we came into the draft with 12 picks, I wondered if we booted "Trader Mike" a year to soon. As it turned out, it was. How could Idzik not have traded down with 12 picks, and not enough room for them.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want Mike back, but what the hell was Idzik thinking? Going into draft week, I was an Idzik guy. By Sunday, I wanted him fired. Now LOL

I've been saying that for the longest and maybe I'm going to far with it but I've always felt the Jets could have gotten Pryor, Amaro and Mcdougle where they got them and still traded up in the second round to get Matthews or Lee or Landry for ex... I've argued this with many on JI and maybe this wasn't really possible but I don't see why not with 12 draft picks from last year and the picks we have this year. Not saying we should have mortgaged the farm but I believe a team would have taken a trade for a 4th (only one 4th round pick) and 5th from last year and let's say our 2nd rounder from this year. Just glad we have a new regime here that will hopefully do the right thing and get this franchise back to being a true competitor and champion.

It's spilt milk. Idzik fired himself by screwing the pooch on wide outs with 12 picks in a draft that produced 10 or more potential franchise receivers

Sadly, there is that valid point that Smith would still stink with Jerry Rice, Lance Alworth, Dez Bryant and Randy Moss as his wide receivers, but hopefully that albatross for the Jets becomes spilt milk before this season begins

trying to compare a guy that has been in the league for 6 years or more and working with the likes of peyton to a new WR is apples to oranges.

yes those wr rookies may be more talented than decker but for the talent he lacks he makes up for with experience, so no I don't believe any of those rookies would have had enough of a impact for us to be even close to 8-8.

As someone older like we are how many times do you say if i could go back and do it all over again knowing what I know now I would?

FACT: experience+decent talent will trump outstanding talent every day.

You know, I can't argue your points at all but I will respectfully disagree on this point. Take any rookie WR drafted in the second round or worse. I believe their talent would have helped them find their way to contributing to help this team. No I'm not saying our record would have jumped to 8-8 or the rookie WR would have had 70-80 catches with 10 TDs and 1000 yards receiving.

What I am saying is that the receiver would have at least had a average year and everyone would have seen the potential and talent there. Plus being that fact that everyone got fired and we have a new regime, the chances are the rookie WR would have done much better this year coming with or without Geno. Hindsight is 40-40 I know and this is all water under the bridge now.

Its just frustrating as hell how the Jets screwed this up last year. With 12 draft picks your telling me they couldn't come up with not one of these true contributing WR, NOT ONE!!! How could they have screwed this up, I just don't understand. As for Decker, yes he has the experience with talent and no he's not as talented as some of the rookies drafted last year but I believe he would have helped develop the rookie to be a contributor as well.

Adams is another one, it's like we could go on all day talking about the stud WRs in this class and after reading every scouting report and watching film on every WR...we came away with Shaq Evans, Jalen Saunders, and Quincy Enunwa...:smiley-angry021:

Most of the old board loved Idzik unconditionally, but his decision making was so piss poor I never understood the love affairs.

sigh....

you gonna start with this stuff again???

most of the old board didn't love idzik unconditionally. there were many who said it was too early to make a judgment on him after only 1 or 2 years, but most of those who took this position (myself included) also said they'd be fine moving on from him. it seems you were the only one who perceived unconditional love, as if it we didn't have the pitchforks and torches lit, we were his groupies.

also, YOU loved the draft class at first. you raved about how pryor was great, amaro was the next witten, mcdougle was a stud, etc... yes, you did call for them drafting a WR sooner, and i will tip my hat to you on being one of the first members to jump on the montcreif bandwagon. of course, you said benjamin would be a bust, so maybe you aren't the all-seeing swami you claim to be. but let's not pretend that you didn't love the draft class before you hated the draft class. you may want to try and impress the people who don't know you, but there are plenty here from the old board(s) who recall you loving these picks before hating them
