I've said it before. If the Jets go 8-8, that's double the win total from last year. That's a big ask. Especially since they haven't added that many pieces on offense. Yes Carpenter will help. Yes Marshall will make plays.
But they have a journeyman qb with a career losing record. And they don't have the talent to play catch up if they fall behind by a couple of scores early in games.
So unless someone has a huge unexpected break out year (Devon Smith?) and Fitzpatrick's play substantially improves from his history-it's probably a 6 or 7 win team. Hope I'm wrong and the Jets capture lightening in a bottle...

Now that we have our first legitimate starting QB in at least 4 seasons, a way better roster and a Coach with brains, the Jets should be able to win 10 games and compete for the division

LV odds are based purely on the amount of money being bet, not on any objective opinion

I'm making two wagers... Jets over and Bills under

Like Bigmoe, I have seen it all... 48 years of watching this team… It’s simple, my wife lines up the psychedelic substance(s) whose primary action is to alter cognition and perception then I can win every game :).

All kidding aside, I always stay hopeful that they play physical, smart competitive football. This year I think we have the right coach… he has displayed the right temperament while trying to change the culture of this team (think last 4 years). His no nonsense approach is refreshing and he is making the players “responsible,” thank goodness.

IMHO think we have assembled a decent team with talent. My concern is LB… Davis is average and needs to step it up. Harris is slow but good enough to hold the fort. I would love to see Pace be replaced my Mauldin (spelling) and move Coples (where I believe he belongs) to DL and play Reilly get younger.

I really cannot prognosticate W-L, I’ll let you guys do that. If they minimize their mistakes, play smart they can be a winning team that makes the playoffs.

I am at 5 - 11. I would love a Super Bowl, but lets be real. The T.B. Buc's spent huge money last year and finished with the 1st overall pick. The Eagles spent huge a few yrs ago and were awful. It takes a year or 2 to jell as a team. New Coach, new teammates, playing close to NY, same fans, fabricated stories from the media and eventually a Franchise QB in next yrs draft via a trade up. Next year, we hopefully can stick it to the Patriots and the rest of the NFL.

Man that would be a crushing blow. I hope your wrong and see you do as well but you make some very valid points. Only time will tell and if this will be the case, I guess the magical, mystical savior that is Fitzpatrick would be even less then serviceable then even close to valuable.

I'm thinking 7-9 +/- 2

Relying on a great D means many close games. Often, to win those, you need a late minute comeback to score a FG or TD that makes difference between a W or an L. To accomplish that, you need a passer with the arm to throw downfield. The Jets QB is now a guy who failed with 5 teams and is coming off a year that had stats skewed by one amazing game.

You also have to reduce the W number because of the strong division the Jets play in. No easy 2 win team to play here and if you get behind because key players are suspended or injured (as has already happened), the season could be over early

Respectfully have to disagree. Better coach, significantly improved roster especially the vast improvement at QB after 4 seasons of abysmal turnover machines pissing away games and seasons.

Not saying Superbowl (especially after Judge Buffoon Berman's bought decision today) but from the depths of 4-12 to a winning season and contending for the postseason is a definite strong possibility

Definitely optimistic about this season

Yet another great post with very valid points. Some would disagree or are to blind or stupid to realize that the magical and mystical Fitzpatrick played for 5 other teams and couldn't do it with them, so why would he do it with us. Some think that Fitz is a significant improvement from the past 4 years of QBs we had. I disagree but time will tell.

I'll admit I'm predicting 10-11 wins also. Strictly because I'm depending on our D, o-line, RBs and receivers making everything happen after Fitz throws his 10 yard passes. So I'm not depending on Fitz at all other then hopefully not turning the ball over much. If he can do that then we have a chance. Yes this puts ALL THE PRESSURE on everyone else so hopefully they can do it but I definitely see where your coming from.

Football is the ultimate team sport. The team surrounding Fitz is better than he's ever been around. I don't get where you're coming from. You had all the confidence in the world in Geno but don't have confidence in Fitz who proved he is better.

I wanted to see Geno out there also based on his potential but Geno fulfilling his potential was just a wish. We know what we got in Fitz and that to me gives me some confidence heading into the season. Fitz knows his game and understands his limitations. For that, he will take what the defense gives him and won't turn the ball over. Our defense should give him solid field position each and every game. We'll be alright!

Does anyone else feel differently about this team after pre season than in years past?? This team especially the offense seems to be well prepared. Rex's teams never seemed that way. I believe we even had a PS with only 1TD. I just have a feeling this team is going to be 9-7 to 11-5 if things go our way. I like where our team is headed even if Fitz is the guy for a year or two. I could be wrong and the Jets have for sure proved me wrong many times, but I just have a gut feeling we are going to be pretty good.

Between Sheldon getting suspended, Milliner getting hurt, Devin Smith getting hurt, Mauldin getting hurt, Amaro getting hurt, Antonio Allen getting hurt, and then, to top it all off, Geno getting his jaw broken and the way we looked in the first two preseason games, I thought this was going to be a long and painful season, and it still might be, but after the last two preseason games I'm feeling a lot more optimistic about this team too. I see the team getting progressively better and thats a good sign with opening day approaching. I also agree that was NOT always the case with Rex, I never felt like the team was fully prepared to start the season on a high note.

There were a couple of very positive things in this preseason that leapt out at me. Granted it was preseason, but these things were obvious differences from the past 6 years.

1. An offense that gave away very few turnovers. The three experienced QBs that played seemed to understand the playbook, take what the defense gave them and know when and how to throw the ball away when there was nothing. Even Petty showed early positive signs although he was more prone to rookie errors

2. Bowles remained calm and consistant throughout but seemed to be in full control of the entire team. There were no childish fist bumps and the out of control screaming, demonstrating, jawboning and cursing we had grown accustomed to.

Fitz is not a good QB. There is a reason he has never won more than 6 games in a season and that is when he needs to make plays he fails.

I was excited about what I saw last night from a coaching standpoint, but I think we may struggle out of the gate and find ourselves 1-5 or 2-6 because of Fitz and it probably taking 6-8 games for the defense to really settle in.

Likely 6 or 7 wins, with Geno at QB again at the end of the season looking OK and the team finishing well.

But we have some marked improvement each week, so I am excited that we can be a playoff team

Well, I've been accused of being too optimistic, but I'll give it a shot here.

I think we have better than 8-8 talent. No question about it. Our secondary and d-line will be very good. And the WR position took a big step forward with Brandon Marshall. Both Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell both had a great camp. Zac Stacy as third string? Uh...sure.

Our offensive line is average bare minimum. I would even say above average. The only question is Fitzpatrick. He doesn't have to be a star. He just needs to protect the football and make the occasional nice throw downfield.

Absolute worst case scenario is 7-9. Best case scenario is 11-5 and playoffs.

My prediction: 10-6. AFC Wildcard.

I say 10-6 but we will miss the wildcard with "only" 10 wins. The competition will be tough and I believe it will take 11 wins this year to get in the show. If we can somehow get 11 wins, then we will get a wildcard.

I've been thinking 10-6 the last few weeks, and I'll stay with that.

But I do feel more confident about it after completing the preseason than I did before.

Too bad it probably won't get us to the postseason as mentioned above: that would be quite a shock after 4-12...

I think ten wins gets us into the post season. 11 wins takes the division. The AFC East is very competitive this year and we'll all be beating each other up. I see lots of series splits.

Not saying we'll win the division, just saying whoever gets to 11 wins will take the East crown.
