2017 Draft Impact on 2018 Offseason

Mac & Co stuck to their BPA strategy and I think it will pay off in the long term. It's clear they think Shell and Burris are starters and they're prepared to see if Hackenburg or Petty can be the QB of the future. The end of the season position-by-position breakdown should look as follows;

QB - Boom or bust. It's that simple.
RB - Powell will be top dog and we'll see if Elijah McGuire is a legitimate backup. If not, a RB will be needed in the draft.
WR - I think the team is set here. Stewart, Enunwa, Anderson, Chad Hansen and Peake will provide a solid, if not spectacular group.
TE - Leggett or bust.
OL - Mac has way more faith in Wesley Johnson than I do. A LT will be needed regardless of how well Beachum plays.

DL - Even without Sheldon, this group is set.
S - Best position on the team and the glue of the defense.
LB - I think there's enough talent here to form a good defense. The strategy will have to change to get the best out of Lee. A MLB will need to be found in 2018 to replace Harris.
CB - This group cannot be any worse than last year. Burris will be a solid #2. A #1 will be needed regardless of how well Claiborne plays.

IF Adams, Maye, Thomas, Leggett and Hansen work out the remaining holes can be filled. As of today, the Jets have $61mm in cap space in 2018. Between that and high draft picks should fill the following needs;

LT
MLB
RB
C
CB

As QB.

Of course there are other variables such as Shell, Lee, Burris and Jenkins continuing to improve. I think that's all possible if not probable.

Thoughts anyone?

At this moment leaving QB out of the scenario we will need to address the following for sure cause the roster is thin or not good in the following

ILB
Edge Rusher
OL (could be for starters or backups depending on how the OT play and can use some depth at C/G)
RB

I think with the addition of our safeties, Claiborne and the progress of Burris and Roberts CB won't be an issue. Depth is there too

have to believe they are still banking on Mauldin to be that ER, only if he can stay healthy... another option would be Bishop...
as for inside linebacker they will likely convert Donahue from that 4-3 OLB to 3-4 MLB... He will likely backup Harris for this year and could end up his successor...
as of right now we are stacked in a few positions and RB is one of them...

moving forward the main concern is the OL... and of course how the QB position plays out...

Actually the $61mm will increase to $80mm after Decker, Gilchrist and Skrine are cut.

I agree they think Mauldin is gonna turn it on this year... I don't have as much confidence in him being the ER we need.. I think he's a good role player but we need our, Khalil Mack, Von Miller type... This year we are ok at RB but Forte is a year older and it's the last year of his contract.. Love Powell but he will also be a year older and McGuire isn't a true backup he's also a good role player... But I agree with your points...

Matt Forte is entering his 2nd year of a 3 year deal... Year 2 is fully guaranteed...

My bad thought it was just a 2 year deal.. Either way ain't a chance he is on the roster 2018

dead money in 2018 is $1 M and savings of $3 M this was meant to be no more than a 2 year deal but this second year is screwing us with him recovering yet again from another injury...

Don't forget WR. The Jets a lot of talent at WR, but no number 1. As much as I like all the WR's we have I don't think there's a number 1 in the bunch. That will need to be rectified.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't we have Kellen Davis still on the team? So that makes our TE's as follows:

1) Leggett - If Leggett doesn't beat out the resident group, Mac made a huge mistake. Basically anyone with a pulse should be able to immediately become the number 1 on the Jets.

2) ASJ - Everyone thinks this guy is a good player? I think he's OK at best. IMO, best suited as depth. He'd be a nice compliment to a proven TE. Can serve as a second TE option in the passing game, can serve as a decoy, etc.

3) Kellen Davis - He's a decent blocker. Every time the Jets went to him, sometimes in the end zone, he drops the ball?

All in all, This is now an OK group. Albeit, very young and inexperienced...........

I don't think Davis is under contract.
I like asj, with a real off-season, and a healthy body, he is more than serviceable as a pass catching tight end. If he has become sober, he can be a weapon. I like Leggett and if he isn't our starter, its because asj has shaped up.

Decker can play the 1, especially with a youth movement. If we were win now Decker couldn't be the 1. Perhaps they are waiting for a kid to claim the 1.

Worst case scenario wee grab a qb and wr combo next year.

Remember after the 2018 round of veteran cuts, Mac will be $80mm UNDER the cap. That's enough to replace several of the key holes such as C, OT, ILB, CB and OLB. The key is going to be how many guys from the last three drafts step us and prove they don't need to be replaced.

The main guys who need to show up are...

Jordan Jenkins and Mauldin at OLB
Shell at RT
Darren Lee at ILB (although he needs to be utilized as a hybrid)
Deon Simon
Burris and Marcus Williams at CB (Williams needs to beat out Skrine at the Nickel)

And that's not including the rookies.

It's entirely plausible most, if not all, of these guys prove themselves and if that's the case there will be optimism next season.

I don't think necessarily think Williams needs to beat out Skrine for the slot CB position. Last year Skrine was bad when he wasn't playing in the slot, which was a lot.. Bad scheme. Skrine in the slot is golden but hey if Williams is better so be it... I just don't think it needs to happen... I 100% agree with the rest of your post

I think Skrine is a decent slot guy but Williams will cost about 1/3 and I'd love the cap savings. The key to continued success if bringing in younger and cheaper guys to move in. Let the shitty teams overpay.

Fair enough... I could agree with that thought process

Expected starters end of 2017 season;

LT - Beachum/Ijanlana
LG - Carpenter
C - ???
RG - Winters
RT - Shell
QB - Hackenburg
RB - Powell
RB - TBD
WR- Enunwa
WR - Stewart
TE - Leggett

DT - Wilkerson
NT - McClendon/Simon
DT - Williams
OLB - Lee
ILB - Harris
ILB - E. Henderson
OLB - Jenkins
CB - Claiborne/Williams
CB - Burris
FS - Maye
SS - Adams

Assumptions...Anderson and Hansen would be receivers 3a/3b. ASJ will play his way off the team this year. Sheldon will be an afterthought. If that wasn't to be the case, the move to a 4-3 should be made. Lee will be on the outside permanently in a hybrid OLB/safety role. I think many of us are getting a bit carried away with some of the late round picks. It reminds me of a few years ago when some were penciling in Terrance Gannaway as the replacement to second year RB Bilal Powell even before camp started. It never happened. Nothing should be expected from the 5th-7th round picks.

Mac's Impact
2017 Draft: Four starters (Adams, Maye, Leggett, Stewart), one contributor (Hansen).
2016 Draft: Five starters (Lee, Hackenburg, Jenkins, Burris, Shell), two contributors (Anderson, Peake), plus punter.
2015 Draft: One starter (Williams), two contributors (Simon, Mauldin0.

This would leave LT, C and RB as 2018 priorities on offense and CB, ILB, and another ILB as defensive needs. Of course QB, as always, is the wildcard. With low draft picks and $85mm+ in cap space,

There's NO fucking way that there is 5 starters from the 2016 draft. The 2016 draft is as bad as 2014. Every single player mentioned could just as easily be bums. The idea is DUMB.
