2017 Off season shaping up to be a combo of the 2008/2009 off seasons

2009:Draft Class:

Mark Sanchez
Shonn Greene

In 2008 , then GM Mike Tannenbaum setup a veteran group of players to set the stage to possibly move up in the 2009 draft to select a POSSIBLE long term solution at the QB position. Knowing Brett was a one year deal as they embarked in an all out spending spree for Eric Mangini to make a run at the Superbowl. Let me elaborate why this off season feels like a combo of those two off seasons enrolled into the one we're currently having.

Make no mistake, Mike Macagnan is batting .500 right now in 2018. Siginng the best CB this free agency in Trumaine Johnson. Reinforcing the O-Line with new Centers/Guards Spencer Long and Travis Swanson. Boosting the backfield with Isaiah Crowell and Thomas Rawls. Siging a young QB in Teddy Birdgewater (who has immense talent with a huge chip on his shoulder). The middle linebacker position was upgraded with Avery Williamson. Terrell Pryor Jr who is very reminsicent of another ex-Browns WR we traded for in Braylon Edwards.

The team is currently being built with a good combo of veterans and a large amount of youth. The locker room was completly cleansed last season as it was evident that the team was very unified.
What jumps out to me is how well Mike is placing every integral piece into its proper position for this team to excel well into the future-especially having a whopping $112+M in cap space for next season.

With that being said, the stage is set for this organization to once again draft a franchise QB. The environment is competitive-The aura is all about football 1st and egos out the door. It took year four, but Macagnan has positioned the Jets to have a young gun leading this young team into the right direction as the keys were handed to Mark Sanchez in '09 and '10 in which we went to 2 AFCGs.

I honestly feel this will be a season of the beginning of a great 5-10 years of Jets football.

Sanchez was thrown into the fire immediately. I don’t think the rookie is gonna be thrown in right away. Not with McCown and Bridgewater here.

But this year is similar otherwise. We loaded up in FA with some good, young players to give us a decent chance at finishing above .500. I don’t think it’ll be much better than that in 2018.

2019 is hopefully where it all comes together with a FQB behind center for an entire year.

We went after OL in FA back then. And thats what we should have done more of this offseason.

It wasn’t a particularly strong FA class of o-linemen in 2018. Nate Solder was the best OT. Very Average player who was way overpaid. Andrew Norwell was the best Guard, and nobody was outbidding Jax. Ryan Jensen held out for a dumb team to overpay, and he got it in TB. Even Richburg’s deal with SF was ridiculous for an average Center.

Center was the biggest immediate need, and we landed two guys who can play both Center and Guard in Long and Swanson. Macc mentioned the importance of versatility in players. He showed that with these signings. Tackle wasn’t even an option for the Jets due to a dearth of available FA’s, and Beachum/Shell did good enough last season.

I believe you are wrong about Long and Shell. IMO these 2 guys are not the answer to our OL. Midway through the season, I'll tell you what a mistake it was to go with these guys.
