Most of the players they dumped were entering the final year of their contract, meaning they would've been off the books next year -- players such as David Harris, Brandon Marshall and Nick Mangold, to name a few. They gained an additional $24.4 million by cutting players who were signed for 2018 -- Eric Decker, Darrelle Revis and Marcus Gilchrist. In other words, they could've kept those three and still would've been in terrific shape. (Quite obviously, Revis and Gilchrist were expendable.)

The most notable free agents will be Sheldon Richardson, Morris Claiborne, Marcus Williams, Demario Davis, Wesley Johnson, Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Josh McCown. None of them are must-sign guys, although that could change based on the season. Obviously, they'll have enough money to retain whomever they want, plus be active in the free-agent market.

The Jets say they want to build through the draft, but that doesn't mean they can sit on their hands for another off season. Remember, the league has a spending minimum. I'm not sure where they stand in relation to that floor, which is based on a three-year period, but I think it's safe to say owner Woody Johnson will have to dust off his checkbook. He could use some money to sign a current player to an extension, except no current player is worthy. Quincy Enunwa ($615,000) is underpaid, but he's still two years away from unrestricted free agency.

League wide, the big-name free agents will be a Kirk Cousins and Jimmy Garoppolo, if they don't re-up with the Washington Redskins and New England Patriots, respectively. In theory, the Jets could make a mammoth offer for Cousins, still only 30, but everything I'm hearing suggests they will look to the 2018 draft for a potential franchise quarterback -- if Christian Hackenberg doesn't work out.

Here's the bottom line: The Jets will have a crazy amount of flexibility next year to fix a roster that needs a lot of fixing.

It will likely be closer to $90mm with the carryover from 2017. More importantly, they are finally willing to put the young guys out on the field to see what they have. We will see if Burris can be a reliable (or better) cornerback, while last year he inexplicably rode the pine for the better part of the year. In a 5 win season no less! Hackenburg will finally see the field. Shell will be given a chance to claim his spot for a long time. The safeties will be 2 first year guys. GOOD! Will they take their lumps? Yes. Will they make rookie mistakes? Yes. Will we know what we have by the end of the year? Oh yes. Will Stewart, Hansen, McGuire, Leggett and Donohue get their chances? I certainly hope so!

If all of these guys don't get their chances, then the $90mm will be wasted. On the other hand, if they get their shots and even half of them work out, the war chest can cleverly be used to fill in the remaining gaps.

Looking forward to FA 2018, however I don't want them reaching for anyone.

No one over 27, no contract longer than 3 years and an option year. My guess is a #1 cornerback, an offensive lineman (or 2), a #1a receiver, an ILB, and a running back. Beside the corner, the other guys should all be solid, if not spectacular players.

I agree. I don't mind using some of the huge cap room on free agents, but only strategically on long-term major upgrades. No older players or second-tier guys.

My hope is we can have another FA haul like in 2008? People don't understand how important that was.

Traded a 3rd and 5th for one of the best NT I ever saw. If not for constant injury, he would have gone down as the best NT in the history of the game.

Alan Faneca - A true HOF. He was so good he should have just bought a home in Honolulu. He was there every year. He brought an attitude where the OL raised it's game when the playoffs began. Nick and Brick were always good players, Faneca got them to become the best they could be.

Damien Woody - A truly down to earth, born leader. Being a Jet meant everything to him. He, right along with the others, were able to raise their games to the point of line of scrimmage supremacy.

Calvin Pace - The best available OLB in FA that year. He was a pretty good player, but not great.

Tony Richardson - One of the most under appreciated players I have ever seen. After 16 seasons, he was still one of the very best FB in the league. A great and sorely needed addition to the offense.

It's no wonder Rex was able to have so much success in NY. He was gifted a great talent base in Revis, Harris, Mangold, Brick. Add to that all the great free agents this team added and you had a SB ready team that was missing a QB. I'm convinced if Sanchez had turned out to be the real deal, we would have won at least two SB's with that group. That was the best Jets team I have seen since 1998.

We could only hope FA will go as well in 2018 as it did in 2008.

You only get in these positions of having the most available money in the league very few times. It also usually means your team is not that good. More pressure on the front office to get this right. Number one goal should be to do anything to get your franchise signal caller (beg, borrow, mortgage or even tank). Second goal is build a wall in front of him so he doesn't get gun shy and can progress (See current Dallas team). Do that and no matter who you have around him will usually work out. Our current defense is really an edge rusher away from being good enough. Hopefully Kevin Greene can produce one.

The key will be to see what we have in the youngsters.

Justin Burris
Branden Shell
Marcus Maye
Jordan Jenkins
Lorenzo Mauldin
Adarius Stewart
Wesley Johnson
Dylan Donahue

We need to know who can play and who can't play. We need to narrow the number of holes on this roster. If we do, the $90mm can be spent wisely.

What about all the others that should be on that list?

Darron Lee
Jamal Adams
Jordan Leggett
Chad Hansen

My point is the entire team is starting a new? The NYJ might as well be an expansion team right now?

I figure with what little I know about these kids right now, Maye, Stewart, and Adams will turn out to be better than average players. The kind of players Mac will be building around in 2018.

The others may/may not be good players? But I do they're all role players and not much more.

I guess that is what makes this years team exciting to watch. For years, the jets were a team with mediocre talent. Now we have unproven players. Let's hope they pan out. I rather watch a team give their full effort than the shit we watched last season
