Adam Gase or Le’Veon Bell, one must go

The New York Jets have run into an issue stemming between head coach Adam Gase and star running back Le’Veon Bell. At this point it’s clear, one has to go.

The New York Jets have an issue on their hands, a rift if you will. That rift has been caused by a lack of communication coming from the top following the timing of former general manager Mike Maccagnan’s firing.

There is a difference in philosophy between the former front office and the current regime. And that difference in philosophy has trickled down on to the gridiron and it’s impacting the success — or lack thereof — the Jets are having on Sundays.

Star running back Le’Veon Bell isn’t wanted and that fact is getting harder to dispute each and every week.

Bell was handed a hefty four-year, $52.5 million contract by Maccagnan in the offseason. At the time the move made a ton of sense.

Signing Bell would give young quarterback Sam Darnold his best skill position partner he had had in his short NFL career and the former All-Pro running back would hopefully rejuvenate what had been a lackluster offense a year ago.

But then Maccagnan was fired and new general manager Joe Douglas was brought in. And suddenly the players that the Jets had spent big money on in the offseason weren’t a byproduct of the current regime.

They weren’t Douglas’ guys. And in that regard, they weren’t Adam Gase’s guys either.

It’s been widely reported that Gase was never in favor of targeting Bell in the offseason. And given how he’s used his running backs in the past it’s easy to see why.

But the hope was that Gase would be able to adapt his system in order to maximize the talent at his disposal. After all, Bell was and is still one of the most talented running backs in all of football. Surely it would be difficult not to get production out of him.

But be it out of stubbornness or just pure spite, Gase has remained true to his scheme. And in doing so, Bell’s tenure in New York has all but been wasted.

This was never more evident than this past Sunday in the team’s disastrous 22-6 loss at the hands of the previously 0-11 Cincinnati Bengals. Despite facing a team ranked as one of the worst run defense teams in the NFL, Bell was hardly used.

Darnold was forced to throw a whopping 48 times and that wasn’t just a product of game-flow either. Bell was given the ball just five times in the first half.

The Jets ran 37 offensive plays against one of the worst run defenses in the league and managed to get their All-Pro running back the ball five times in one half of football.

Bell was shoped at the trade deadline. No one bit.
I fully expect Bell to be back next season unless he has a meltdown before then.
Let's not forget, Bell had 3 big gains erased yesterday by penalties and that has happened throughout the year. Everyone was complaining Gase was running Bell to much all year . Makes no sense to ship him for a mid round pick, while eating a good portion of his salary. His production should improve with an improved o line, if not he can be moved then or waived for next to nothing. With the strike looming, he likely doesn't cost anything come 2021 anyway

He was always a bad fit for our O line, he needs guys who can hold up while he picks his way round them. Bilal Powell is a better fit, just slam straight into anything resembling a hole. Gase has run Bell into the line and he gets stuffed for 2 yards a time. I don't know why some want him to keep doing it. Why we didn't run outside against Cincy is another question. Fix the O line and then see what Bell looks like.

Both must go. Problem for us fans is that it will not be concurrently. Bell is traded in the off season whilst the schmucks who own this team will keep Gase for at least two more years.

LETS LOOK AT THIS IN A BIGGER WAY. Taken a look at the above …..It is what I think are the big picture points of this story...our future.... not just about one player but what others see with the Jets.

a) We fire Gase this year or next & hire a new coach?
b) We fire Douglas next year or the year after & hire a new GM?
c) Our record
d) Our talent
e) The press
f) Seeing ghosts
g) Our near future?

Is anyone going to listen to Adams this year when he says come retire ....sorry play for the Jets????? I swear players come here based on a travel guide & money.

You come here & you get signed ...then a new GM/coach comes in & change the style of play you run. Then maybe your big contract gets dropped because of this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes it happens at other places but it happens here (coaching/GM all the time.

Again, who would want to come here except to grab the money & retire? Would you? Think about it how do we attract players now with this crew that we have now

For those of you that boat......Bell is going to be like a lighthouse that says stay away from our shores...... We are a ship without a rudder......

I am one that thinks playing like a jet means collecting your paycheck until you hang them up.

What would I do..........Over spend......On a GM, HC & Ast HC's where needed (lOL).

I do like our DC & The GM needs more time but their feet must be held to the fire.

IMO This is a bigger issue then we think....& again dont pick up PP from AZ. I hope they fire his lazy ass from the team.......I want players that try hard & really care........Yes I like Adams but he needs to get better..........Smarter.....if not send him away too.

A tank is a bad fit for the Jets OL.

Do we really have to pick just one? I'm terrible at decisions. I say shitcan them both...

<sigh> another brain dead sports writer. So Gase isn't using Bell enough? Gee, what a shame when he should be running him every down behind our magnificent offensive line! If only Gase didn't beg the future first ballot hall of famers on the Oline not to block for him! And Gase well let's fire him so Darnold can learn his 3rd %#$%$ offense in 3 years! And let's fire the next coach after 8 games so he can learn two of the f'n offenses in one season! Yeah, that's got to be the best f@!k'n way to ruin a young QB ever!

I don’t necessarily agree that one of the other needs to go. Bell’s running style is dependent on the O line sustaining blocks longer than a second. Think about it..... why run Bell 20 times a game to pick up 50-60 yards?? Our OL CANT RUN BLOCK. I think Gase has known that since game 3 Now if we get some legit OL thru the draft and FA, and this shit continues, then Gase is to blame. I like Bell...... and he is still good in the open field so we should hold judgment until he gets some legit line help. Now Gase..... I don’t like him.... never have. He is one of those people with “smartest man in the room” mentality. Problem is ......he isn’t, and being a true sociopath, will never accept responsibility for his own failures. That’s my fear for this team..... that Gase and his attitude and stubbornness, will hinder the development of this team next year

Problem isn't Bell, problem is Gase! Come to find out the 3 weeks we looked like a competent offense, Gase took a step back, and not as soon as he steps back into the mix the offense looks completely putrid and incompetent again!

Hire a decent coach and stop wondering what's wrong with the players that all regressed under Gase!

Agree, plus Bell continues to show a positive attitude, which I like in a player.

Has Bell been properly used to his full potential?.....I certainly see room for improvement.

No disrespect to you, but I could give a shit about his "positive attitude". His play has been very much less than positive/productive. The guy has looked a step slower from his days in Pittsburgh and often like he's running through quicksand. Plus he's made the big money now so how hungry is he really? Again, wrong RB for the wrong team. Another in the long line of Mccagnan fuck ups.

LOL in all fairness his running style doesn't fit a line that can't block for a fraction of a second.

This is why I've been screaming all season for more use of Powell (he hits the hole and takes what he can get, no dancing around), but if Gase had any creativity he would be using them in two back sets to mix it up and open up things.

I don't think Bell came to retire, but if we feel like Gase is misusing him and potentially sabotaging him, how the fck do you think he feels? He's the one getting pummeled every play
