Cousins makes me nervous. Must be a reason Washington didn't want him.
I can think of$34.5 million reasons why they didn't want him.
He wasn't going to sign a long term deal with them. He turned down what was the largest guaranteed money in league history last year. Smith had a great year and will cost $20 million less for 1 year.
He just reminds me of Neil O'Donnell.
It would be nice to sign him. Won't have to give up draft capital to move up for a QB we hope will turn out to be as good and can use those pics to get some weapons and o line around him.
Cousins , maybe Barkley , upgraded o line and FA Reciever could be the start of something nice.
Can still grab a QB in the late second through 4th round or next year.

Don't think that the Jets are looking for a one year rental. Smith is a FA after 2018. Cousins would be coming in on a new contract, likely a 5 year deal.

Edit. Just read that there is an agreement to extend Smith 4 additional years.
Going to be interesting to see how much he is getting and what was actually traded . It's reportedly a second round pick, and players.

Mainly because it is a given if the Jets break the bank for Cousins that he will turn into Neil O'Donnell. And because Cousins is not wanted by the Redskins just like the Steelers didn't want O'Donnell after a SB appearance.

You don't offer the largest guaranteed contract to a player you don't want. They tried unsuccessfully to sign him long term 2 years in a row and it was clear he wanted out, would have cost them$34.5 million to keep him this upcoming season.
I'm not saying I'm against it because I wish we would have drafted Cousins, but I don't think he is a QB that will win unless he has a great OL and lots of weapons.
Not necessarily. Mac will likely try to sign Cousins , if it doesn't happen he could look at Bridgewater or resign McCown.
Trading the farm would be against Mac's philosophy completely .
He was just extended so I don't think his seat is as hot as you do. He will still have 2019 FA and Draft if it doesn't happen this off season. Woody completely bought into the full rebuild and he isn't in the way to derail it.
As much as I hate to say it. Mac and the Johnson's have not given up on Hack and 2018 could still be the year they turn to him at some point. If they improve the O line and add some playmakers and Hack fails, next season will be the year that Mac must find a QB or else.
That's pretty much every QB in the league. Brady is probably the only QB who doesn't seem to skip a beat when his best weapons go down.
Meanwhile, KC fans are rejoicing and Redskins fans are lighting torches and gathering up their pitchforks. Washington boards are going absolutely ape shit over this
