The Jets, with their sixth pick of the 2017 NFL Draft tonight, stayed put rather than trading down and selected LSU safety Jamal Adams, called by some draft analysts "the best prospect in the draft."

It is the ninth time in the last eight drafts that the Jets have selected a defensive player in the first round.

"We felt very fortunate that Adams fell to us at that spot," general manager Mike Maccagnan said shortly after the pick was made. "We feel he's a very good player and he'll be a great addition to the Jets not only as a player on the field but what he brings from an intangible standpoint off the field."

Here is an all access draft moment on Jets new safety Jamal Adams from LSU:

Initial Scouting Report

<h3><span><u><strong>Strengths</strong>//<em><font color="green">Needs Improvement</em></font></u></span></h3>

<strong><font color="green">Strengths</font></strong>

Jamal Adams is a natural-born leader of men. He is well-built. He steps downhill looking to punish running backs to set a tone for defense. He toggles between patient and urgent in treks to the ball. He approaches target with open arms and wide, balanced base to limit escape routes. He is an intelligent field general getting secondary aligned properly. He plays with plus balance in coverage. He is a successful pattern reader who can digest combinations. Alert for misdirection keys from offense. He can handle coverage responsibilities against tight ends. Five interceptions and two recovered fumbles over last two seasons at Louisiana State University. Special-teams terror as freshman and sophomore, notching 21 tackles. No penalties in 2016. Father, George, was a first-round pick of the Giants in 1984.

<strong><em><font color="green">Needs Improvement</em></font></strong>

Adams is too willing to clamp onto receivers down the field. He is hard-charging downhill, but a little stiff when asked to retreat. His long speed appears to be average on tape. His eyes drop when targets approach his area. His anticipation is average, limiting his range as a center-fielder. Adams will give away some interceptions due to drops. He is slower coming to balance as tackler on bursting runners between the tackles. His desire to limit cutbacks leads to challenging play-side tackles. He doesn't pursue with expected vigor from across the field. His aggressiveness opens him up against play-action.

<strong><font color="green">Analysis</font></strong>

The son of a former NFL running back (George, who played at Kentucky and on the Super Bowl champion New York Giants team of 1986) looks like he's grown up with the game. Even in Louisiana State's always-loaded secondary, the nation's top safety recruit got on the field a significant amount as a true freshman (two starts, 66 tackles, five break-ups, 10 special teams tackles). Interchangeable safety with a sheriff's mentality. Adams is a physical tone-setter who should thrive near the line of scrimmage or in a robber role. Should be a commanding presence in the locker room early on and his do-as-I-do play demeanor could be the catalyst for turning a struggling defense around quickly.

<strong><font color="green">Position Ranking</font></strong>

Top rated strong safety.

<strong><font color="green">Projection</font></strong>

Top ten selection.

gmf, the way this Jets Draft is going it looks like next year is the QB & Offense. I agree with it. But 1 problem 49ers are also in the same boat. The Difference between Jets/9ers is 49ers are trading for more picks in next years Draft! This will give 49ers plenty of picks to trade up to get the QB they covet. Jets do not have the picks needed to trade up & would have to give away next 2 years of Draft future to move up. Jets only shot not doing that is LAST PLACE! This will guarantee 1st pick in Draft & a chance to get that QB of a Lifetime. This current Jets team is a 2-3 win team this year.

49ers are known for getting the right QB in Drafts & sadly Jets are not & the last time Jets got it right at QB in Draft was 1965. So even if our Jets gets the first pick in 2018, I am not confident in their knowledge in Drafting a QB, especially after Jets GM's last 2 choices at QB & the talent he thought they had. Mikey with first pick might take a QB rated to go in 7th round.

Maccagnan failed to acquire quality trades with picks, this will continue to haunt us moving forward... Don't think he will successfully negotiate trading either Richardson or Pryor... As for QB not worried about this year as we are in rebuilding mode... Lets see what we have in Petty or Hackenberg... If we suffer through another hard season would only open up the doors to draft a Top 5 QB next draft...

Again not worried about what ifs... We have a full team to rebuild and get rid of the waste until we do that can we then fully see the potential on the roster...

“He’s an outstanding player, obviously,” Bowles said in his press conference following the first round. “He’s smart, fast, tough and physical. He’s an alpha. He’s good and off the field he checked all the boxes for us . We think we got a real good football player. We had him rated high.”

I hated this pic about as much as I hate the avatar that I didn't select. I know the Jets gave up many big plays last year. But the biggest problem in the secondary is a past prime cb with lofty salary. Maybe the Jets should've filled this spot with Revis and looked for a cb instead.
