An indictment of Gailey and the QB Coach

This hasn't gotten enough attention in the press and/or sport talk shows. Petty could not read defenses or learn to get rid of the ball after 2 years with the Jets! What the hell have Gailey and QB coach Patullo been doing for 2 years!!?? I get that Petty played in a vastly different system, but college freshman can learn a pro offense and excel immediately! My evidence, you may ask? Christian Hackenberg! He excelled as a freshman under Bill O'Brien. Speaking of Hack and the coaches, are you aware of the grand plan for him? In his 'redshirt" year, he would be taught the mental aspects of the game. Then in the *coming* offseason, the Jets would work on his mechanics!!! What, both of these things could not be done LAST offseason??? You can't make this stuff up. I'm so sick of this incompetence.

gailey & patullo are culpable with petty looking as unprepared as he did.. no question..

but hackenberg not having his mechanics addressed until the upcoming off season is on bowles.. the HC had the final say on if & when hackenberg's mechanics would be worked on..

if gailey & or patullo disagreed, tough shit!! but obviously, bowles in his infinite wisdom signed off on the decision.. go figure.....

Hackenburg has been working on his mechanics all year, he just isn't song practice reps.
From the day they drafted him they said he needed a full year just to fix his mechanics. Nothing has changed.

I couldn't agree more... you saw the kid look, cock his arm and restart how many times? Then to put him out there behind arguably the worst OL in FB is an atrocity. The entire coaching staff is the worst sine the Kotite years...

I mean I read once where BB use to watch film with Tom B and coach him up.

Basing what on? This was reported in the pre season. Gailey said publicly that hack needed at least 1 season to re learn mechanics because his were so bad. Mac also stated several times hack isn't seeing the field this year. It a major story, and was also discussed on here.

Their belief in hack, is that he has huge upside, but that Penn state destroyed him. He was constantly scrambling and throwing like a mad man on the run because he had no talent around him. He took a crazy number of sacks behind a terrible line.

They have to un do what penn state did, then re build him.

Never saw that at all. Not really sure an OC would state that either, especially of a guy the team basically drafted to be their next QB.

I remember Gailey (and Gruden for that matter) saying that when he switched his footwork back to the way Bill obrien taught him in his final bowl game he looked like the Hackenberg of his freshman year

I'm looking for the link, but I'm also working. I found a cbs story that alluded to it, but nothing yet. I guarantee you Mike Francesa had a guest on after hack embarrassed himself in the pre season, averaging 2 yards per pass. The story was about Gailey saying he need to completely redo his mechanics, in a follow up,he said it takes at least 1 season.

Hack has not practiced in team reps, but is working on his mechanics. This is not recent, I've known this since pre season. I'll continue looking for a direct link, but I heard it on the radio show.

I don't think you blame the coaches tasked with developing a QB to have certain things you want them to grasp from one year to the next. You can definitely blame them for not accomplishing those goals.

One thing I have noticed while watching, and I don't know if this is Fitz, Geno or Petty for that matter, but has anyone else noticed when we have a receiver deep the Q's try to stick the ball "on them" as a opposed to getting it to an open spot with enough air for them to run under it?

LOL, I guess it's piling on to a miserable season, but man we just don't get those type of plays. They appear to be there with Anderson especially, but we're just trying to get it to perfectly.

Leading the receiver open deep, requires a capable qb, chemistry between the qb and wr, and no safety over the top. That's why you see a lot of back shoulder throws, incase the safety is baiting you, only your guy can get it.

My information comes from direct quotes from Gailey and/or Patullo in an article by one of the beat writers. I don't know which writer, but my best guess would be Brian Costello in The Post. The article was a few weeks ago, maybe 2-3,which would coincide with the last time that the offensive geniuses spoke to the media. Not positive of the date or writer , but I am positive about the information concerning the plan for Hack that i posted in the thread starter.

When the drafted Hack, all we heard was that he had played in a pro-type offense and all he needed was experience in his reads against sophisticated pro defenses. They said nothing negative about his mechanics.
It was only during the season that we read that his mechanics had to be ... REBUILT???
If so, who were the people who scouted him and recommended that he be drafted highly? While we're in the axe-wielding mood, shouldn't their heads be on the chopping block too?

His mechanics were a known problem. They were better when he was a freshman, but then they were thrown to the wind for 2 years as he tried to survive. He was drafted because mac thinks the risk is worth the possible reward.

That's what bugs me. If his mechanics were fairly good when he was a freshman and ran a pro style offense well enough to be a "top 5 draft pick if he comes out", what happened his last 2 years at PSU?
What offenses were they running? The Wing-T? The Veer? The Wishbone? The Single Wing?(Ask your grandpa')
It was some version of the T, wasn't it? So, even if he was running for his life, he still had the skills in his freshman year.
It should have been necessary to only scrape the rust off.
Who misjudged his readiness so badly?
That's the person who should get the axe, IMO.

Isn't that exactly what whoever plays QB for the next few years will have to go through?

This was a national story on pen state.
Bill Obrien left for the Texans, there was no talent at the school. Hack should have transferred, he was loyal to his team and other players instead.

Bad mechanics are like bad habits, you don't just flip a switch. He need to re learn the right mechanics until it's in his muscle memory. Until then, under stress, any human reverts back to old/bad habits. That is why you don't practice a guy until his mechanics are right.
I believe he was sacked something like 100 times, sponge kind of record I believe.
