Annoyed Todd Bowles: 'Ryan is the starter, Bryce is the backup'

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Ignoring public outcry to make a quarterback switch, New York Jets coach Todd Bowles has remained steadfastly committed to the embattled Ryan Fitzpatrick.

On Thursday, Bowles bristled when asked repeated questions about why he won't give Bryce Petty a chance to start.

"For me to make a quarterback change, I'd have to have a quarterback controversy," Bowles said.

With his jaw clenched, he added, "Ryan is the starter, Bryce is the backup."

In other words, there's no controversy in his mind.

The Jets (3-6) are out of contention, and Fitzpatrick leads the NFL with 13 interceptions. Playing on a one-year contract, Fitzpatrick is considered a lame duck, so it seemingly makes sense to evaluate Petty, a fourth-round pick in 2015.

Much to the chagrin of the fan base, Bowles has maintained that Fitzpatrick still gives the Jets the best chance to win.

"Because Fitzpatrick is not the only one playing over there," said Bowles, explaining why he's sticking with him. "This is a team game. We lose games with more than just Fitzpatrick. ... So, when you look at the film and you see mistakes made, it's across the board. It's not just Fitz.

"If I felt there were enough mistakes where I could put somebody else in there right now, I would put them in there."

Bowles benched Fitzpatrick last month, but it was short-lived as Geno Smith suffered a season-ending knee injury. He underwent surgery this week to repair a torn ACL.

Fitzpatrick's status this week is somewhat uncertain because of a mild knee sprain, suffered last Sunday. He has practiced the last two days, albeit on a limited basis. He said he's "definitely optimistic" about his chances of starting Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams (3-5).

Bowles said Fitzpatrick is "getting better," but he stopped short of declaring him fit to start.

Let Bowles have his way while he thinks he is still JETS Head Coach. Thats about the range of his power telling Reporters Fitz is the QB. Way to go Bowles, you showed some guts there & motivated the reporters with your fierce pep talk! On your way out Bowles, dont forget to thank Wilkerson & Richardson-Revis for showing us fans that you cant motivate & command respect from Players to even play hard for more than 1 entire game a season (Bills). BYE & take Fitz with you & Gailey.

I am not shocked at all. The guy is Balls-less to make any changes whatsoever.
How he can place Fitz back in there last week when you know Fitz is injured and prefer him over giving Bryce an actual shot to ignite some sort of fire to a team that had a slight chance of turning this thing around and not stick with Petty?

F this dude. I hate it when a coach has no guts.

My only hesitation to all of this is that Bowles and Mac may have seen enough in practice and film to know that he either isn't ready or daresay not good enough in their estimation. If they feel as though he isn't ready and that by playing him now you risk screwing him up, then they are doing the right thing. If he isn't good enough, they are also doing the right thing. I think that they are in a tough spot, and there is no easy way out of it. I'd really like to see the kid play, but I don't want to see him destroyed out there either. Let Fitz play until he screws the season to a point of no hope, and then let the kids run the string. It'll happen soon enough, giving one or both QBs ample opportunity to learn on Sundays.

come this off season this team will be gutted... any players they feel would be a distraction (Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker) whom have been vocal on behalf of Ryan Fizzlesticks will either be gone or dealt with... they know if they make the switch to an unknown player they could lose the locker room which is already unstable... the only reason they went to Geno is they had the backing of certain team leaders... then Geno got injured and they were stuck into giving Fitzshyt another chance after he came in and didn't lose the game for us... since then he has not been the only cause we have lost games, special teams acting special again and defense not playing as a unit... whomever is at fault needs to be fixed...

A lot will depend on what happens with petty. If he comes in and stinks, who knows what happens. If he has a great connection with Marshall, he's not getting cut. I think Decker is here 2 more years at least. Marshall already has 1 foot in broadcasting so he's retiring whenever his production declines. I don't consider his numbers this year to represent his true talent.

cap casualties...

Marshall has no guarantees...
Decker not tied to this regime and he tied himself to Fitzpatrick... Macc & company could get draft compensation in moving him...

Mac won't be spiteful. Nobody forced mac to act,and he showed that by waiting so long. The fact is restructuring is possible for anyone, but 2 pro bowl veterans on a team of rookies is a good thing. Like I said, it depends on what happens from here.
