Another Jets second-rounder getting ripped, this time Devin Smith

Apparently if you’re a Jets second-round pick, not doing much on the field and then getting trashed by anonymous sources in the media is kind of a thing. It’s a weird rite of initiation, for sure, but it’s clearly a club at this point.

After 2016 second-rounder Christian Hackenberg had his turn in the barrel last week, we’ve now moved back a year to wide receiver Devin Smith.

Via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, there were concerns about whether Smith was truly involved after coming back from a torn ACL this season, with sources saying “team decision makers wanted him to be more engaged in his preparation in meetings once he was medically cleared to play.”

Smith was cleared prior to Week 10, but didn’t play until Week 14. He played 35 snaps in four games, and caught one pass this year. He’s played in 14 of a possible 32 games since they chose him 37th overall in 2015, mostly because of injuries. He suffered broken ribs and a partially punctured lung in training camp in 2015, then tore his ACL while playing special teams in Week 11 of his rookie season. He started this season on the physically unable to perform list, but it apparently wasn’t the physical they were worried about.

“A lot of times I felt that I was ready and my name wasn’t called,” Smith said. “I just told myself, ‘Just keep working hard.’ That’s been the whole thing this year. Just working on my body and making sure my body gets what it needs. So, I feel like going into this offseason is very important.”

The Jets used three rookie wide receivers this season, with undrafted Robby Anderson at the head of the class. And if there are questions about whether Smith is putting in the time necessary, seeing a guy with less of a pedigree getting his snaps probably puts that in stark relief.

“He started, . . . kind of regaining his old form late in the season,” General Manager Mike Maccagnan said of Smith. “Didn’t have a lot of opportunities. This will be a big offseason for him. We’ll see how he does, . . . It’ll be an important year for him. We like him in terms of a prospect. We do think he has potential. It’s a question of giving him an opportunity to get on the field and actually show what he can do.”

There will certainly be some offensive retooling for the Jets, and Smith’s draft status likely buys him at least one more year. But with veterans Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker (for now) along with a crop of rookies who took advantage of Smith’s absence, it might be hard for him to work his way back into the rotation.

flgreen (a great poster/founding member of JFU) made an excellent point about smith after he ripped up his knee..

the jets needed to approach '16 like he wasn't even on the team..

seems like the jets wisely agreed..

That's an interesting way to put it, and to a large degree it is a buffet of varying talents. We have potential vertical threats in Anderson and Smith, possession guys in Decker and Marshallx2, and all-around in Peake and Enunwa. I believe that the elder Marshall will be traded or cut, but the remaining corps of WRs is very promising. Add another young TE prospect to the mix and we are in very good shape in my humble opinion. If Smith comes around and fulfills his 2nd round investment, we are golden.

I am Ok with the numbers game. Have enough speed guys & regular guys & there sure must be some talent in there.....

I get the feeling he's too brittle and really not that talented?

He got lost behind Anderson, J. Marshall and Peake... Lots of young talent.... He needs to earn his playing time next year...

maccagnan 1st $ 2nd round picks to date..

williams; (6th pick in round 1) very good player who essentially fell into our laps..

smith; (37th pick in round 2) often injured one trick pony..

lee; (20th pick in round 1) undersized LB who tends to disappear for long stretches..

hackenberg; (51st pick in round 2) yet to take a regular season snap..

i've given bowles all kinds of grief here.. but aside from hackenberg showing real signs in '17 of becoming our 10+ year starter, maccagnan shouldn't be allowed to continue to keep swinging & missing in the top of the draft past april..

But this is also the guy that Signed UDFA's WR Robby Anderson and Jalin marshall... Drafted 3 guys 1 in the 5th RD in the 7th RD that have not only made the team but have flashed the ability to play in the NFL in their small sample size in OT Brandon Shell , DT Deon Simon and WR Charone Peake. As well as drafting 2 guys who late in the year showed a lot of development and look like they could be good finds as well in LB j. Jenkins and CB J. Burris.

I think as far as overall drafting goes Mac is doing just fine and believe me if the light goes on and either Hack or Petty develop up to their talent. He will look like a genius..

i legitimately agree with almost all of this post.. i even said as much as far as hackenberg potentially making my point moot..

but you can't be a successful GM by only hitting "RBI fielder's choice ground balls" with mid to late round picks, while consistently "striking out" on kids at the top of the draft..

at this very moment, good, bad, right or wrong.. maccagnan has only gotten one out of four picks right in rounds one & two..

Devin Smith was to be what Robby Anderson is a home run threat... Smith has some tools to maybe develop but he needs a full off season to do so, so far in his limited NFL experience he is yet to be healthy to have a full off season body of work...

If he can stay healthy this off season with his athleticism maybe he can become a vital part of the offense... Only offense should be his goal as a returner he doesn't have the short area quickness to make decisive change of direction moves to get free and then use his speed to separate... If we had blockers doing their jobs he would be the optimal returner because he has wheels that can go...

i think you also described very succinctly why smith has a lower WR ceiling than anderson..

anderson's "suddenness" helps create space out of breaks & in space..

basically, smith is a extremely poor man's laveranues coles, without the heart, toughness & hands..

You mean to tell me a 2nd rounder couldn't earn playing time over a 7th round draft choice and two UDFA's?? This is the very example of why Mac is an incompetent dingbat.

Or you could look at like he is a genius in finding late round gems.

optimism is a good thing.. i'm a fan of it..

still, do you have any thoughts on the 11th post in this thread??

In theory you are correct, you will be unsuccessful if your premium picks don't pan out. However, one or even years is too quick make a judgment on many draftees. Some hit right away, others/most take time. If I'm not mistaken Lee was leading the team in tackles when he injured his ankle, so to say he is a bust is wrong in my opinion. Besides, he is a 22 year old kid who was learning the ropes on a dysfunctional/under-performing defense last year. Hackenburg is a boom or bust pick, who we may not know about until his 3rd or 4th year. To say he was the wrong pick is correct, but only if you base that on the production we got last year for a premium pick. If he pans out, and its a big if obviously, it'd be the best 2nd round pick in our history and Mac is a genius. The Smith pick at #2 actually made sense, at least to me because we needed a speed guy to compliment Decker and Marshall. However, like most rookie WRs Smith needed refinement in his route running and general WR skills. He is a guy who also had no injury history, and his development has been non-existent because of a string of injuries. As far as QBs go, Mac is in a bind because we haven't been in a position to pick a sure-fire franchise guy. Unfortunately, he has to take swings at guys like Petty and Hack in the hope that he hits on one. He may have to do the same thing this year, while neglecting other obvious needs like OT, Edge, CB and S at the top of the first round. I think it is easy to second guess draft picks, particularly when you have the luxury of hindsight.
