i didn't say lee's a bust.. at least not yet.. i did think he was underwhelming though.. if maccagnan picked him with 3rd or a 4th?? great pick.. but let's be honest.. the jets thought they could make this kid an "x factor" in what they thought would be one of the top defensive units in the league.. yes the defense was horribly disappointing but lee just doesn't look like a star in the making to me..In theory you are correct, you will be unsuccessful if your premium picks don't pan out. However, one or even years is too quick make a judgment on many draftees. Some hit right away, others/most take time. If I'm not mistaken Lee was leading the team in tackles when he injured his ankle, so to say he is a bust is wrong in my opinion. Besides, he is a 22 year old kid who was learning the ropes on a dysfunctional/under-performing defense last year. Hackenburg is a boom or bust pick, who we may not know about until his 3rd or 4th year. To say he was the wrong pick is correct, but only if you base that on the production we got last year for a premium pick. If he pans out, and its a big if obviously, it'd be the best 2nd round pick in our history and Mac is a genius. The Smith pick at #2 actually made sense, at least to me because we needed a speed guy to compliment Decker and Marshall. However, like most rookie WRs Smith needed refinement in his route running and general WR skills. He is a guy who also had no injury history, and his development has been non-existent because of a string of injuries. As far as QBs go, Mac is in a bind because we haven't been in a position to pick a sure-fire franchise guy. Unfortunately, he has to take swings at guys like Petty and Hack in the hope that he hits on one. He may have to do the same thing this year, while neglecting other obvious needs like OT, Edge, CB and S at the top of the first round. I think it is easy to second guess draft picks, particularly when you have the luxury of hindsight.
maccagnan, seemed to reached on hackenberg in the 2nd round & even with all of our issues at QB, he wasn't even in uniform until week 17.. that's damning.. damning enough that maccagnan doesn't deserve 3 to 4 years to see what the kid becomes.. in my eyes anyway.. i also believe maccagnan shouldn't be allowed to draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd round in april.. i get the "keep drafting one til you find one" theory.. but not letting the same guy keep picking kids high in the draft that can't play..
simply put, smith couldn't have been any more disappointing as a 2nd rounder to this point..
i believe not being able to know what you have in a GM until year 4 or so is a tired cliche.. is that completely fair?? probably not.. but neither is watching a guy consistently bring in kids that don't work out or look like career JAGs..
