Another Jets second-rounder getting ripped, this time Devin Smith

In theory you are correct, you will be unsuccessful if your premium picks don't pan out. However, one or even years is too quick make a judgment on many draftees. Some hit right away, others/most take time. If I'm not mistaken Lee was leading the team in tackles when he injured his ankle, so to say he is a bust is wrong in my opinion. Besides, he is a 22 year old kid who was learning the ropes on a dysfunctional/under-performing defense last year. Hackenburg is a boom or bust pick, who we may not know about until his 3rd or 4th year. To say he was the wrong pick is correct, but only if you base that on the production we got last year for a premium pick. If he pans out, and its a big if obviously, it'd be the best 2nd round pick in our history and Mac is a genius. The Smith pick at #2 actually made sense, at least to me because we needed a speed guy to compliment Decker and Marshall. However, like most rookie WRs Smith needed refinement in his route running and general WR skills. He is a guy who also had no injury history, and his development has been non-existent because of a string of injuries. As far as QBs go, Mac is in a bind because we haven't been in a position to pick a sure-fire franchise guy. Unfortunately, he has to take swings at guys like Petty and Hack in the hope that he hits on one. He may have to do the same thing this year, while neglecting other obvious needs like OT, Edge, CB and S at the top of the first round. I think it is easy to second guess draft picks, particularly when you have the luxury of hindsight.
i didn't say lee's a bust.. at least not yet.. i did think he was underwhelming though.. if maccagnan picked him with 3rd or a 4th?? great pick.. but let's be honest.. the jets thought they could make this kid an "x factor" in what they thought would be one of the top defensive units in the league.. yes the defense was horribly disappointing but lee just doesn't look like a star in the making to me..

maccagnan, seemed to reached on hackenberg in the 2nd round & even with all of our issues at QB, he wasn't even in uniform until week 17.. that's damning.. damning enough that maccagnan doesn't deserve 3 to 4 years to see what the kid becomes.. in my eyes anyway.. i also believe maccagnan shouldn't be allowed to draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd round in april.. i get the "keep drafting one til you find one" theory.. but not letting the same guy keep picking kids high in the draft that can't play..

simply put, smith couldn't have been any more disappointing as a 2nd rounder to this point..

i believe not being able to know what you have in a GM until year 4 or so is a tired cliche.. is that completely fair?? probably not.. but neither is watching a guy consistently bring in kids that don't work out or look like career JAGs..

You mean to tell me a 2nd rounder couldn't earn playing time over a 7th round draft choice and two UDFA's?? This is the very example of why Mac is an incompetent dingbat.

Really? Come on.. There are a laundry list of players that get drafted later or are UDFA that beat out higer draft picks.... and as Old#15 said maybe Mac is a genius.... What paradigm do you want to look at this from.... It's easy to be negative and look at the negative and continue the negative narrative for the Jets.... maybe that's part of the problem... The culture of this team is not solely bourne from the FO/CS/Players the fans have a big part in it... Maybe it's time we start changing the culture...

never really understood this point of view..

in my view we, the fans have almost no part in the success or lack thereof..

in your eyes, what as fans can we do to change a teams culture..

My personal opinion... The fans create the atmosphere in which the players feed off of. ANY professional sports player will tell you the fans can fuel their fire to perform or completely suck the life out of them. That emotion for professional players carries over from the day of the game, to practices, to offseason workouts up to and including how they speak of playing in said city to otehr players around the league; all of that creates a winning, i want to be part of attitude, or a losing get me the hell out of here attitude.... If you disagree that's your opinion... I have mine...

I think there is more evidence for my case than yours. great comebacks with the fans sparking the team on to victory.... Home field advantage where some teams are just impossible to beat at home....but .500 on the road.. etc....

home field advantage is definitely real.. so much so, i was almost looking at it as a given.. teams that have loud, passionate fans do give their team, well an advantage..

but in today's era of sports, playing in front of loud, passionate fans is abandoned by players for money.. in some cases, not very much more money.. relatively speaking..

albert pujois might have been the most beloved ball player in the country at the height of popularity while he was playing in saint louis.. who loves the cardinals more than that fan base??

non of that stopped pujois for chasing a few more bucks in anaheim.. it's when i truly i realized todays atheletes are essentially independent contractors regardless of how beloved they are with their current fan base..

in today's professional sports world, rivalries exists almost exclusively with fan bases..

but like you said, if you disagree that's your opinion.. i have mine..

fans do make a difference & growing up going to Giants games taught me that Giant fans were helping the giants more than jet fans.........

Some of the best fans are Giants, GB, Pitts etc. Not always the case but winning fans win & losing fans lose LOL

sounds like you described fans that root for historically the best run franchises in the NFL..

it not for revenue sharing in the NFL, the jets would have gone out of business long ago..

fans notwithstanding, IMO..

safe bet, theo epstein was by far the biggest reason the cubs "culture" has changed from lovable losers to world champions..

& yes, cub fans are arguably the best fans in the country..

It's like a formula or a statistics equation... Part Owner/Part GM/ Part HC/ Part Players / Part Fans... Some parts are more important than others in getting the formula just right

well, the cubs ownership hired epstein, epstein hired joe maddon & certainly had some influence on the talent on the field..

his influence on the fan base is debatable..

Packed stadium, fans going wild for the home team.
Take away Eli, Rodgers, Ben and those "winning" fans will be watching a lot of losing.

Just a reminder that there are exceptions to every rule: The Yankees are winners. :)
