Antonio Cromartie Signs with Jets

We really need some LB's who can cover and rush. Our front line is completely dominant but we are missing speed edge rushers

I agree on the rush part 100%for LB's but Bowles use of LB's in coverage is very small... He likes bringing in DB's to Cover.... I think this will make Harris and Davis much more effective this year.

now that the Fitzpatrick watch is over let's see where Cromartie lands. If he comes to NYJ its going to be very difficult to not consider Jets the early winners in FA so far.

Good article on Cro from last year when he wanted to show the world he still has something left. The link has the video of him running the 40 referenced in the article.

Antonio Cromartie calls out critics, flashes 40 speed

In the Nicholas Dawidoff book Collision Low Crossers, which chronicled the New York Jets' turbulent 2011 season, Jets coaches would marvel at the natural athleticism of Antonio Cromartie, who could run and change directions like a gazelle despite his lanky 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame.

The same staff was also driven crazy by the inconsistencies in Cromartie's play, despite his obvious physical gifts. This might explain how Cromartie came to sign with the Arizona Cardinals this offseason after Gang Green showed little interest in retaining the 30-year-old cornerback in free agency.

You can imagine this snub serves as significant motivation for Cromartie, who put his uncommon athleticism on display via Instagram on Friday.

The accompanying caption reads: "And (people) say I've lost a step. Only thing I can do laugh at you all. Ran 4.34 and 4.36 in the 40 today after a workout and I'm only getting faster."

For comparative purposes, the fastest cornerback time in the 40 at the 2014 NFL Combine came from Justin Gilbert, who ran a 4.37. If Cromartie's 4.34 time was official -- and, just to be clear, it is not -- he would've tied for the third-fastest time of any Combine player in Indianapolis.

But let's not quibble over tenths of a second. Cromartie remains an extremely nimble NFL player, with much to prove. Come the regular season, that speed might leave the Jets feeling the sharp pang of regret.

I'm not that familiar with how Bowles runs his defenses but this will definitely be interesting to see. He seems to be getting the guys he wants, so I'm expecting to have a very competitive and exciting defense next year.

LBs arent as valuable since 63% of defensive snaps in 2014 were in nickel package...that means 2 LBs on the field 63% of the time for bowles...

And a lot of money for Harris being a 2-down player.

I guess that will be determined by how they plan on playing him. If he is used as the thumper in the middle of the field and rushed in blitzes he may actually be more effective in Bowles defense. His short comings are when you ask him to cover anything.

He actually runs a very similar defense to Rex, base 3-4, uses a lot of man to man press coverage, and blitz's from all angles.

The main differences are he uses what became the "Big Nickel" He takes a LB'er off the field and puts a big hard hitting S up in the box, who does a variety of things. He is the guy the offense has to worry about. He even uses it a lot on running downs. I'm looking for Pryor (who I didn't like at all in the draft) to be the break out player next season. he has all the traits that Bowells loves in the Big Nickel.

Yeah. I like Harris, and I'm glad he's back, but your right, he is being paid an awful lot for a 2 down player. I think a part of it is they wanted to keep him away from Rex who is a division rival, and probably a major competitor for a play off spot.

Hyatt, if you're out there, I've gotta give credit where credit's due: you said we need three CB's, and I said two. In other words, you appear to have been right. This negotiation with Cromartie makes it three CB's we are bringing in.

Well done.

We know Harris is limited to that role. My question is why was a thumper even needed? For 7.5M per year? Our rush defense has been very strong especially since Richardson and Harrison arrived to form a strong front line. How important is having a David Harris when our line is strong and he is such a liability in space? I don't find it coincidental that the Jets have continually given up huge chunks of yardage with Pace and Harris lagging far behind in pursuit the past 3 years. I really wanted someone quicker and with better coverage ability there. I saw Bruce Carter was just signed for 5M per year. He had 8 passes defensed and 5 INT's as an ILB last year. He has suddenness and quickness and would have been a great weapon as a blitzer up the middle for Bowles. I had Carter as one of my top FA's for this team. I'm very surprised they went with Harris who has had exactly 2 passes defensed in 2 years. But I trust the Jets know far better than I do on such matters.

I do believe teams will attack the soft middle once they face our stout DLine that brings pressure up the middle on top of a revamped secondary. LB coverage will be the obvious glaring defensive weakness. Pryor will need to step up his game to give help there.

I also wasn't a big fan of re-signing Harris, especially with Pace, Coples and to some extent Pryor being on the field at the same time. Speed and coverage skills at linebackers and safety are paramount in today's passing NFL. The Pats kill us with the dink and dunk and beating them has to be job 1 for this organization.

This is Cromartie we're talking about. You have to expect a pregnant pause before he signs.

Antonio Cromartie - DB - Free Agent
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports says there's a "strong sense" around the league that free agent Antonio Cromartie will sign with the Jets.

As bad as I would like Cromartie back, I would have trouble paying him the 6M he is asking for. When he was on Sports Center two mornings ago, he basically said that his home is still in Jersey and his family likes it there. I'm not sure if it's 6M or the multiple year deal he wants, that's holding things up. I say, let's sit a wait and let Cro & his agent come back to us.

I'm thinking its # of years, like a few other posters suggested. He's entering age 31 year. He knows this will probably be it, in terms of a multiple year deal. I don't see the point in giving him more than a 3 year deal (2 years ideal for the Jets). If he's looking for 4-5, he'll probably have to go back to the Cards or somewhere else.

My thoughts on Cromartie:

The only way I'm signing him is if the intention is to start him at FS and Bowles feels like he can make the transition. IMO another CB is simply a luxury we can't afford at this point with the money we're putting aside for Wilkerson and the draft.

I think the Jets need to be looking to fill that FS spot as the last piece to the secondary, and if thats Crow I'm fine with it, Cy suggested that yesterday and I think he's right, I always viewed Crow as a guy who can slide over to FS as he gets older like Rod Woodson did, but thats the only way I'm signing him, not to pay another CB who would be a luxury we can no longer afford. Jason updated the cap and its not as much as I thought if you account for the draft and Wilkerson.
