Are the Jets definitely taking Zach Wilson?

At least one team in the NFL is not fully convinced the Jets are selecting Zach Wilson with the second overall pick. And, perhaps, a few more.

It's a thought worth considering, at the very least. And an option worth entertaining, at the very least, for a football franchise that has done such a horrible job of developing a first-rate passer. What if the Jets chose Justin Fields? Is that really out of the question? Is that somehow crazy?

Anything goes this time of year in the NFL, with the draft less than two weeks away and silly season in maximum overdrive. And at a time when there has suddenly been at least a little more wiggle room in Mock Draft Nation – and in Vegas – when it comes to San Francisco taking Fields and not Mac Jones with the third overall pick (readers of this space already knew that was coming), well, why is it not worth examining the possibilities that the Jets don't grab Wilson?

Consider the fact that the narrative that the Jets were absolutely, positively going to take Wilson began well before the quarterback evaluation process was complete. In fact, it started to take shape before all of the quarterbacks had even completed their workouts. Now, count me among those who heard from proven, trusted sources, weeks ago, that Wilson was the Jets' guy at that time and they had an eye on him all along … But that doesn't mean they had to make the decision then, and they still don't have to make it now.

Fields looked like a stud last week in his final opportunity to wow teams, he did his work against far tougher competition than the kid from BYU, and as much as there are oh so many people out there trying to tear him down, there are no shortage of teams that totally love the kid and believe he would be the first overall selection in many drafts (just not this one, because of Trevor Lawrence and all). So, again, let's just keep in mind that the Jets are not contractually bound to take Wilson.

"Are we all sure that Wilson is going second?" one longtime AFC executive said. "Is that written in stone somewhere? Seriously, have they come out and said it? Maybe Wilson is the pick, but you can't tell me he is absolutely a better prospect than Fields. We would take Fields there at 2. What if they do take Fields? Then San Francisco takes Wilson. Then New England comes up to 4 and gets Jones. There's no way that could happen?"

Um, doesn't seem totally crazy to me. Not in the least.

Teams have done the unexpected and surprised us before, just when we thought we had them all figured out. It's one of the many things that makes this event so great. And while I get that one could make the case that the Jets have nothing to gain by pulling the okey doke and coming up with an elaborate ruse, well, I would counter by saying what exactly have the Jets done? Are we truly certain of all the things we believe we are certain of?

I'm as guilty as falling into that trap as anyone. And I may have already done it in this case. But I'm definitely going to keep sniffing and snooping around on the quarterback roulette, because that wheel is definitely still spinning and it might not stop on all of the spots we think it will.

sorry @Bigmoe

We have to ask the question, but won't know the answer for another 10 days.
If the Jets feel there is no difference between Wilson and Fields, and they heard the Niners had a hard-on for one of them, JD might consider trading the #2 for the #3 plus another high round pick.
We'll find out.

I going to trust in Joe D and Salah and do my best to just leave it at that. I want them to draft Fields but then again, I wanted them to draft Darnold and we all see how that turned out. If and we all know their going to draft Wilson and when they do, I won't be happy about it but I'll live with it and hope for the best.

Everyone expected us to take Marino, but we fooled them and took O'Brien.
Yeah, silly them!

your very welcome,my job to inform and frustrate you!

I have to hang my hat in this :

Some “Twitter detectives” took a look at Wilson’s Instagram and found that he recently started following All In One Stop Shop – a vinyl car shop in Lodi, New Jersey. Incidentally, that shop just so happens to be a 30-minute drive from Florham Park – home of the New York Jets.

Chris Simms has a really good track record of rating the QBs in each draft, probably the best of anyone. He says that Zach Wilson is QB1 and it is not close. I also saw on one draft site that 23 out of 23 front offices they surveyed through their contacts rate Wilson as QB2 behind Lawrence. The big knock on Fields is that he locks onto his first read and has a problem coming off of it... where have I heard that before?

I am rooting for the pick to be ZW.

Fields also has a bad tendency to wait to see his reciever get open before throwing the ball. Same as the last guy.

I also like the DraftKings odds:
Trevor lay $10,000 to win $100 as #1 pick (lock)
Zach lay $5000 to win $100 as 2nd pick. ( lock)
Its Zach
LetsGo!!!!!!

If you think it's Justin as 2nd pick you can make some cash
Lay $100 to win $1600
not happening

Trevor being #1 gets the same odds as brady winning any of the superbowls in the rest of my lifetime. if only I had an extra 10k every year I could win a sure $100

That must be what he did against Clemson in the semi-final game . These talking heads took 2 games and used it to tear down this kid . Funny, but if i remember correctly Ohio State won both of those games and Fields played the entire game both times . If you #1 option is always open, what should you do, sit around and wait for someone else to get open to prove you can read a defense ? That kid made NFL throws against Clemson and Bama but all everyone talks about is Northwestern and Indiana because he struggles . One game without Olave and the other when Olave was not 100%.

I really hope for all our sakes that Zack Wilson is what he's said to be .

He has the exact shortcomings as our last "Franchise QB". They were obvious when we drafted him. Same as Fields

And you know this how, because someone say so on TV or because you saw it yourself on game tape . I find it hilarious how this kid is criticized for throwing to his 1st read only and struggles if that read is covered . His 1st read must be opened a ton because he seems to hit it at an awfully high clip .
I never liked Darnold coming out of USC and said so back then when everyone and their mother was sucking for Sam . I'm not a big fan of Wilson now either but it is what it is . 2 Games were used by the critics to denigrate Fields but i dare anyone to show me the teams the Wilson played that compared to Northwestern or Indiana . Wilson played a game against Costal Carolina a team with much smaller players but speedier and the pressure he was under made a huge difference in his play .

Justin Fields and Ohio State won the games against Indiana and Northwestern . Refresh my memory about how Zack Wilson and the BYU Cougars did against Costal Carolina ?
