Are the Jets willing to draft & stash arguably the best linebacker in the draft?

Jaylon Smith is a top 10 talent, when healthy. Even before the medical report, there was still some thought that he could fall to the Jets at No. 20. They could use an outside linebacker. Other mock drafts projected Smith to go higher than No. 20.

The Giants, who pick at No. 10, also could've been a destination for Smith, as they attempt to upgrade their defense.

Now, could Smith fall out of Round 1 entirely?

It is difficult to envision the Jets using their first-round pick on him, presuming he's available at No. 20, since it looks like there's no way he plays in 2016. The Jets need outside linebacker help immediately.

Might Smith be available when the Jets select in Round 2, at No. 51 overall? If so, would they take a shot at him then? Should they? (The Giants pick 40th overall in the second round.)

Either way, this is pretty awful news for Smith.

All along, it seemed unlikely that Smith would play in 2016, but the report of nerve "issues" is troubling for him.

Here's what Smith said Friday at the Combine about his situation:

"The AFO [brace] is to help me walk and help everything heal. It's helping the nerve heal. The nerve isn't stretched at all. It's just the healing game. That's all. It's a process. I'll be back 100 percent. We just don't know when.

"It's the matter of the recovery process. I don't know when the nerve and everything will heal, but it's just a matter of me taking it day by day and controlling what I can control. It'll be a long-term decision for whoever drafts me. I'm a guy who's going to be around for a while."

With the signing of CFL star Freddie Bishop and second year Lorenzo Mauldin coupled with David Harris and possibly Erin Henderson could the Jets afford to draft and stash a player with this type of potential especially if his medical clears him from having lingering long term nerve issues?

Thoughts???

Unless the reports are total BS I would not touch him @ 20.Maybe in the 3rd, if the scouts think that much of him, I would stash him but otherwise we have played this game enough.

if multiple surgeons were in agreement the kid should make a full recovery i'd be cool with taking a shot on smith at 20..

There is no way any team uses a first round pick on a player whose going to miss the whole 2016 season. Who knows if he will ever be the same player he once was.( that's scary stuff nerves issues). There is no doctor out there that can guarantee he's going to make a full recovery. ( even a third round pick is risky)

There aren't going to be multiple surgeons who are in agreement that he should make a full recovery. This isn't just an Acl injury ( medical science has proven players can come back successfully from this type of injury). We are talking about nerve damage- no doctor can say what is going to happen there( it's basically in higher power hands). You're talking uncharted territory. could go either way.

Three teams supposedly took him off there draft boards already. ( should be many more by the time we get to the draft). Lucky the kid had an insurance policy. Gets something, but isn't going to get what he could have gotten if he didn't get injured. ( have to feel sorry for him)

Combine doctor(s) never gave a full analysis on whether he has nerve damage that would cause long term damage to his playing career. No one will really knows anything until individual team doctors evaluate him. And for all we know someone in the media misconstrued the report of why Jaylon is wearing a AFO brace and stated incorrectly what he/she thought what an AFO brace is meant to do or is for.

Any team that feels comfortable and has short termed contract players for said position maybe willing to draft this kid to stash for an entire season banking he will me make a full recovery. Until we get further medical information in the next coming days will we get a clearer picture on where Jaylon Smith's medical future will look like.

ligaments can be fixed good as new, that's a given.. nerve damage i don't have any real knowledge of but i would believe surgeons would..

I don't think they should. The Jets need help everywhere and they are not coming off a SB win. Therefore, I do not condone drafting with the hopes in a year or two down the road he MIGHT be a great player. They are in no position to be wasting 1st day picks on projects. They did that with Vlad Ducasse and it set the organization back years in regards to talent. If you want to develop a player, utilize your late round picks therefore nobody is expecting much from them any way.

Just did a quick Google search. Click Here

Just remember as fans we can want to take a chance on risky players( due to health) , but owners are going to hold their Gm accountable if he can never play again.

The Jets have only six picks( right now) in the draft, can they really afford to throw away a pick on a player that most likely missing the whole 2016 season.( might never play again).

Jmo I think it's more like the 6th or seventh round because how many of those players are going to make the team.( worth taking the chance at that point , and have everything to gain at that point.

I concur, you work all your life to be in position he was in. Boom and now you will be lucky if you even get drafted. Sometimes life isn't fair.

The man still has a degree from Notre Dame that he didn't have to pay for. That in itself a lot more than most people in life get. Plus i think i heard on the NFL network that he has an insurance policy for injury. I know it's not the same as being a top five pick and cashing in on a million dollar contract that he worked so hard for but the mans life shouldn't be ruined either. Plus i feel he will get drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round with a chance to get healthy. If he's there when the Jets pick in the 2nd and they select him i won't be mad, they're taking a calculated risk.
If it doesn't pan out then he goes into the books with recent 2nd rounders like from '01 laMont Jordan, '02 J. McGraw, '03 V. Hobson, '04 Trade J. McCariens( i believe), '05 Mike Nugent J.Miller, '06 K. Clemens, '07 D. Harris, '10 V. DuCasse, '12 S.Hill, '13 G. Smith, '14 J. Amaro, '15 D. Smith. The Jets might have something still with Amaro and Smith and we all know Harris.

No way do I waste a 1st round pick on this guy. We need a lot of talent and need them to contribute.

If he is still around in round 2, I would be willing to explore the possibilities of trading up for the opportunity to pick Smith.

& if the rumors from this thread are accurate, some teams have taken him off their boards entirely..

until we get much more detailed intel on how severe/debilitating the nerve damage he suffered (in both his knee & ankle) i can't begin to guess what round smith gets picked or if he gets picked at all..

does jaylon smith have nerve damage in his knee?

Only thing I have read on that is the fact that he was wearing a brace, might mean they are trying to protect him from having nerve damage.
