Belichick Was Named NYJ Head Coach On This Day

On February 3, 1997 the NY Jets hired Belichick as head coach when Parcells was first hired as the team's consultant. Belichick later stepped aside for the Big Tuna to take the job.

February 3, Two-Fer
The Jets hired longtime Bill Parcells assistant Bill Belichick as their head coach, naming Parcells as a consultant, all of which spurred an official complaint from New England, which claimed Parcells was still under contract to the Patriots.

February 10, Sorting It Out
Leon Hess and Patriots owner Bob Kraft met with NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue in New York over the Parcells matter. After hours of negotiations, Tagliabue ruled Parcells could take over the Jets' football operations immediately. In return, the Jets would compensate the Patriots with four high draft picks over the next three years - third- and fourth-round picks in 1997, their second-rounder in '98 and their first-rounder in '99.

February 11, Tuna Time
Parcells became the 11th full-time head coach in club history when he was introduced at a news conference at Weeb Ewbank Hall. Belichick was named assistant head coach/defensive coordinator.

Belichick holds a bizarre distinction in NFL history when it comes to his tenures with the Jets: He was twice named the team’s head coach but never coached a game.

Belichick initially took the head job in 1997, when Parcells had been hired as a consultant after leaving New England. But Belichick stepped aside when Parcells took the head coaching job himself a month later.

When Parcells left the Jets after the 1999 season, he lobbied for Belichick to succeed him as head coach. But the day after he was hired, Belichick abruptly quit, scratching out a hand-written resignation letter on a piece of scrap paper that read “I resign as HC of the NYJ,” then announcing his resignation at what was supposed to be his introductory news conference.
