Berrios will hit free agency with return 2 New York possible

Braxton Berrios and the Jets have started discussions on a new contract, he revealed during his Wednesday interview with Pardon My Take.

"We've talked," Berrios said.

The 26-year-old wide receiver, who is set to become a free agent, added that he is "indifferent" about where he plays in 2022.

"I don't look at it as, like, 'Oh, I want to go to this division or this conference,'" Berrios said. "That's not where my head's at, at least."

A fourth-year pro during the 2021 campaign, Berrios caught 46 passes for 431 yards (9.4 average) and two touchdowns in 16 games (one start). He rounded out his production with seven rushes for 40 yards (5.7 average) and two touchdowns.

Berrios earned first-team All-Pro status as a kick returner after turning 28 attempts into 852 yards (30.4 average) and one touchdown. The 5-foot-9, 190-pounder spent the past two seasons (2019-20) with Gang Green but produced a breakout 2021 campaign under first-year head coach Robert Saleh's staff.

"Truly, truly, I think they're heading in a very good direction," Berrios said. "I love the coaching staff there. Most of 'em, they're young, they know what they're doing, communicate well and Saleh is a phenomenal coach."

Berrios has stated before that he loves being a Jet. At the same time, his upcoming decision amounts to more than comfortability.

"Well, it's two sides," Berrios said. "We'll see what happens. We'll see what happens."

Funny but reading his statement he seems like he won’t be back . What’s more important to me though is he doesn’t seem like he wants to be here . His attitude if I read it correctly makes me not want him back . I get the money angle but I don’t feel the love for the franchise or the team.

I feel he feels under appreciated by the low ball offer but he has done nothing to deserve more, yes he came in spot started during injuries but he never earned the starting role he was thrusted into it... Good return specialist but there are better options out there for us if that is what the team chooses to go...

I think Keelan Cole is a FA and imo was a disappointing 2021 FA I wouldn't bring him back.

Because with Denzel Mims length + blazing speed (4.3 something) I think he'd flourish and could also give him more confidence as a WR (due to having a bigger role @ KR).

Mims needs to concentrate on his game and what the coaching staff wants from him. He might be off the roster if he doesn’t show marked improvement.

I would give Mims a look at returner - but tall long striders dont fit what I think is the image of the player you want there - am I wrong?

and you dont want mistakes at that spot - Mims can run and may be able to make one or two guys miss - but if he screws up in this role it is way worse than a bad decision as a WR running an option route

My favorite RB is without question Breece Hall, but how good is this James Cook kid?

He’s 5’ 11”, 200 lbs, so he’s taller and heavier then Braxton, he’s a RB but with exceptional hands and route running. I think he could fill Braxtons role on offense, with the Jet sweeps and all, with a bonus of putting him in the back field. Not sure about KR, but I’m sure than can groom him for that. KR is more about the blocking, I believe, but you have to see/vision the hole and the speed to get through it
I like Braxton, want him back, he knows the system and has a rapport with Zach, just can’t take up too much cap space for a 4th WR/KR.
Unless the Jets envision him as the new slot WR w/Davis, Moore on the outside.
I think the Jets will draft a WR with one of their 4 top picks.

There's talk about the large amount of cap space on the Jets. But there's a lot of people to sign and it'll be used up quickly. Rehiring Berrios would consume an extra 5 million of cap space.

he knows Jamison Crowder is likely gone in free agency and Keelan Cole can go either way but he started this season at receiver, knowing the slot position is open he will try to maximize his dollars knowing he was successful as a receiver while dominant as a return specialist...

to me $8 M a year is high shelf money and he is a gadget type player that has upside in this offense BUT too much for us to give him, his market value is $5.9 M... $ 7 M annual with team type written out after 3 with no guarantees in the 4th would make this type of deal acceptable...

This is actually a good sign because it means he wants to stay here. (14+32)/2=23 The Jets are looking at 24-25 mil for 4 seasons.
