Since we are going there I want to find the universe with the group that has a rhythm section of Jaco and bonzo, Hendrix and Rhodes as the guitarists and Janis up front on the mic. (And for my own personal satisfaction, Jerry Bear helpin out with the rhythms on vocals and guitar.)
Not sure my brain could handle so much awesome on one stage.

There's the old joke about a musician dying and going to what he thought was heaven. He was told that there was a jam going on that night and he was invited. One by one, great players (like the guys you mentioned) step up on the stage and plug in. The guy was beside himself with joy while they waited for the drummer. Then Karen Carpenter walks up, sits at the kit and picks up the sticks and says, OK boys, "Close to You" on four ...

I haven't seen much mention of any Black Crowes. Any list without Rich Robinson, Marc Ford (guitarists), and Steve Gorman (drums) is incomplete. Eddie Harsch is one of the best keyboardist's I've ever heard.

You guys sound like mostly metal and classic rock dudes, and that's cool. I like me some old school rock myself. But there's also a "bloke" from England by the name of Noel Gallagher (formerly Oasis) who is vastly underrated both as a guitarist and a songwriter. Most people in America have very little exposure to modern British music, especially from the 90's.

Jeff Beck and Freddie King are the 2 best guitarists I've heard with my own ears

Also like Adam Jones (Tool), Dimebag (Pantera), Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Sheppard, Jack White, and Gary Clark Jr

My all star band:
Guitar, David Gilmour
Bass, Tony Levin
Drums, Neal Peart
Keyboard, Rick Wakeman
Male Vocal, Eddie Vedder
Female Vocal, Annie Wilson

They'd probably sound like a cacophony of awfulness together, but my favorite at each position.

Fud, you mention "how about Gary Moore' s Les Paul blues style ".
But what about Les Paul himself.
Led was the inventor, and master, of the electric guitar.
Without his contributions, many of the folks mentioned on all those lists might not have been so memorable.

Now that sir, is an excellent point !

Without Les Paul and Leo Fender, this list may not even exist.

Ok in my book there are only four the rest you can toss out the window LOL

Anthony Phillips

Steve Hackett

Mike Rutherford

Daryl Streumer

Now why Rutherford because the 12 string guitar is what he is amazing at besides the 6 string & bass

Sounds like you go back to Genesis when they were putting out art and before "there were three". Earns my respect :)

Poor Anthony Phillips. Story goes that his therapist's solution to his stage freight was to quit the band.

People should be turned on to Daryl Struemer. His solo albums rage from very good to amazing (Ying Yang Boogie anyone?). He also did some fine work with Jean-Luc Ponty, even holding his own opposite Allan Holdsworth on Enigmatic Ocean. No easy task there.

Back to Genesis though, have you seen the tribute band Musical Box?
