Better team, tougher schedule

IMO this is a better team than the one that won 10 Games last year, but it will be hard to match last years wins total because we have a much tougher schedule.

I say its a better team because I get the idea that some of you are underrating this team.

DEFENSE

1. Its year two for this regime and there are no changes to the system, same HC and DC, so less thinking.

2. By all accounts Leonard Williams looks primed for a big year now that his growing pains are behind him, could be a monster year for the Big Cat and this D-line.

3. Sheldon Richardson might be our most talented player on defense and last year he missed four games, whereas this year its only one game barring injuries.

4. We're weaker at NT, but its so much of a passing league that the NT is no longer vital, more of a two down player.

5. I believe the biggest upgrade this year will be in the LB core. We've gotten younger, faster and more athletic. Some see it as a question mark, I see it as an upgrade.

6. Ditto the CB spot opposite Revis. I was against bringing back Cromartie last year because his play had slipped badly the year before he left, and he was equally as bad last year. We have some quality youth at CB and I'm looking forward to an upgrade at this position as well, whether its more Marcus Williams or a healthy Dee Milliner.

7. Lastly, last year Pryor played like a first round pick and I believe the arrow is still pointing up on his ceiling.

So overall I expect this defense to be significantly better than it was a year ago, not a little better, but markedly better, and last years unit was TOP 5 I believe?

==

OFFENSE

1. Again, another year in Gailey's system for Fitz, Marshall, Decker and Co. should allow them to play faster, less thinking.

2. The sky is the limit for Enunwa as a #3 WR with a terrific size/speed ratio. Fitz, Marshall and Decker are all bragging about how good he looks, even Bowles commented on it.

3. IMO Ivory was a bit overrated by Jets fans, a one dimensional runner who offered little as a receiver and wore down as the season progressed, which was a pattern for him. If Forte has anything left in the tank, I think the Forte/Powell duo will be an upgrade and a lot harder to defend, because both are dual threat RB's. Khiery is a better 3rd SY/GL RB than Zac Stacy, so its an upgrade at RB across the board in my view.

4. When we lost Amaro last year, we lost any chance of the TE position being any kind of factor in these games. I know the jury is out on Amaro, but a healthy Amaro at least gives us a chance to have a receiving TE who can make plays when defenses overload to cover Marshall, Decker, Enunwa, and Forte/Powell out of the backfield.

5. I know its early, but the early returns on Jalin Marshall are encouraging, could give us another playmaker out of the slot, or at least compete with Devin Smith when he gets healthy, and he also has a big upside as a punter returner, a position we pretty much got nothing out of last year with Jeremy "fair catch" Kerley.

6. Obviously the O-line is the biggest question mark. Mangold is slipping a little bit and Clady has a long history of injuries, so you really have to cross your fingers there. Carpenter is a beast at one OG spot, but who knows what to expect from the other, and if Qvale or Shell doesn't beat out Breno at RT, expect another year of awful play from that position too. Lets be honest, if there's a unit that can really undermine the teams success this year, its this one. We need Clady to stay healthy and a couple of young guys to emerge this year at OG and RT.

7. Lastly, I know most of you are not crazy about Fitz, truth be told, neither am I, but he has a lot of talent around him and its not impossible that he can repeat last years performance if the O-line holds up. I know that was a career year for the beard, but that had a lot to do with the talent at the skill positions and IMO its only gotten better.

SPECIAL TEAMS

1. Folk is Folk, you expect him to be rock solid, but I see a massive upgrade at Punter with this kid Lachlan Edwards. This dude has a bazooka!

2. Whoever winds up returning punts this year, and my money is on Jalin Marshall, I think its going to be a huge upgrade there as well.

==

So in closing, I think this is a better football team than the one that won ten games last year, but its gonna be much harder to win ten games due to a ridiculous schedule. Not impossible, this team is talented enough to make the playoffs in my view, but its going to be a lot harder.

We have a good team regardless of our schedule especially the first 6 games. I like that our schedule is tougher. It will show the character of the team early.

I think if we can get out of those first six games (brutal) at 3-3, we can easily go 7-3 or even 8-2 the rest of the way.

Anything better than 3-3 and we should win double digit games, but we can't settle for less than 3-3, thats the minimum if we want to be in contention down the stretch.

I agree. Schedule is tough, but teams change year to year so everyone is just basing it off last year. None of the teams we play won the SB so all of them have plenty of flaws.

I agree with almost every single point you made. I am quietly super-excited about the potential of the LB corp. Mauldin was good last year for a rookie, and by all accounts is poised to take a major step forward. I don't think everyone realized how well Henderson was playing by the end of last season. With the speed and instincts of Lee, and the motor, size, and instincts of Jenkins, that unit could be getting a massive shot in the arm, plus we know that the Jets were really excited about Catapano last year and he certainly flashed well before the injury, and if Bishop turns out to be something, that will be a bonus. The LB unit could be a tremendous plus this season, especially playing behind that D-line. If the secondary comes together, the defense could be good enough to give us a shot at winning any game we play. You have to cross your fingers about Milliner staying healthy, but it is encouraging that he was proactive and changed his diet and took up yoga to improve his flexibility and overall physical condition in an attempt to stay healthier. The reports on him so far have been really good, and I still remember how the last five weeks of his rookie season he gave us cb play that verged on being Revis-good. Yes, I am waxing a bit hyperbolic, but it is the pre-season, where all things are possible! :)

Thanks Ham for a well thought out post. I agree with you completely. This is a very solid team. In terms of talent on both sides of the ball, we are probably a top ten team.

Now, although I think our LBers are very talented and will eventually be an upgrade, they will face some growing pains. Maudlin was good as a situational pass rusher, now he will need to take a greater role. Time will tell if he can do it. The other rookies will also have an adjustment period. NFL is a different monster than College. Players are bigger, faster and tougher.

I see your concern about the Oline but the best thing we have going for them is that Fitz gets rid of the ball very quickly. If Clady can stay healthy, we'll be fine.

All AFC East Teams Have a Tough Schedule

All AFC East Teams Have a Tough Schedule

The "tough schedule" only effects the wild card race not the race for the division as the Pats, Bills and Dolphins all play the same teams as the Jets. Those three teams are who they need to beat out because to get anywhere in the playoffs, you really do need to play home games. the exceptions to that are/were long shots including the '09-10 Jets getting to the CC games.

The only differences are the AFC-W road game and the AFC-S home game each one gets. These are:

Jets: @KC, IND
Patriots: @Denv, HOUS
Bills: @Oak, JAX
Dolphins: @SD, TENN

So to properly handicap the schedule, you need to take into consideration those 8 games and divisional head to head only. I like the Jets chances vs the divisional foes this year and each one seems to have issues with the two extra games

This should prove to be an interesting season

Well, the Patriots get to play Denver with Sanchize probably QBing. The Texans in week 3, with J.J. Watt hurt, right now Deandre Hopkins is holding out and their RT was carted off the field yesterday.
Plus, Brady suspension is the first four weeks, ironically enough the Pats are playing three straight home games weeks 2 to 4. Thank you NFL schedule makers.

The jets defense was ranked 9th as far as I'm concerned. They were ranked 9th in scoring against. I could give a shit about total yards.

Mac did nothing for the offense near as I can tell, this unit I see plummeting.

ST should me much better. All in all, I see a slightly better team mostly in ST's. But the scheule will eat us up and spit us out. I say 6-10 at BEST and a top 10 pick. Honestly, I think we suck. Bowles is a BAD HC and I figure we'll lose a lot of games we should win because Bowles is so inferior. The Buffalo game was a gigantic pussy embarrassment for our HC.

I see slight improvement...11-5 based on LBs playing faster and better CB/DB play

Agree with most of what you said Ham.

Just an observation on today's practice. At least from the tweets. Enunwa has been dropping some balls. Today the Jets moved Jalin Marshall to the #2 WR spot, and Decker back in the slot.

Marshall continued to shine as the #2. I know it's only the 4th practice , but Marshall has put 4 good ones together. That's more then a flash.

Fitz said yesterday that "the kid from Ohio state is running routes like a vet" If that continues,it will be very interesting.

Are you sure you're not confusing Enunwa with Kenbrell Thompkins?

Reason I ask, I have been reading all of your reports and I've seen a number of tweets regarding KT's drops, quite a few of them, too many, but I haven't seen any of those for Enunwa that I can recall. Maybe I missed them?

Tremendously Great post @GreenJets&Ham!!!

Many view this schedule as an insurmountable task that just cannot be had. I just dont see it that way. The continuity we have on both sides of the ball and the upgrade we will have on special teams speaks volumes on how opponents will be working that much harder staying up trying to figure this team out.

Bowles is an all out ball coach. No none sense and will have our boys ready every single time. This team will play with a huge chip on their shoulders come game time.
I havent been this excited for a Jets season since 2010. Gonna be fun fellaz!

BTW this is already shaping up to be an incredible turn of events.

He's a rookie UDFA, for goodness sake ... A ROOKIE UDFA!!! ... and a week into camp he's getting reps with the 1's

That alone tells you how off the charts impressive he has been.

No problem brother, I'm glad we cleared it up, cause I heard Marshall, Decker and Bowles all speak complimentary of Enunwa. Incidentally and for whatever its worth, I DID NOT have Thompkins making this team in my pre camp roster projections, too much talent and upside at the position this year in my view (see below).

This kid reminds me of an exact replica of Percy Harvin. without the migraines.

These are his freshman highlights so you can tell, he hits the ground running no matter what:

I hate getting excited early in camp about UFDA players who flash, it often goes badly in the end, but 4 straight days is more then a flash.

The funny part about this is one of the reasons he was un-drafted is Devin Smith, who he played behind.

I am getting excited about this kid. Think the CS is to. Hope the Jets stay under the radar, and an under dog the first 7 weeks. Might surprise a few teams, and be in the thick of it when the schedule lightens up
