The Bills have fired defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, Kimberly Martin of Newsday in New York reported Sunday.
Dunbar was hired in Jan. 2014. The Bills went from a league-best 54 sacks in 2014 in his first year to 31st last year with 21 sacks.
Dunbar also worked under Bills head coach Rex Ryan for three years with the Jets. He has 12 years of NFL coaching experience.

I thought a very good coach who was instrumental in developing Mo, Damon and Sheldon. I can only figure that there wasn't enough space at the table with brother Rob on the scene. Or perhaps Rex needed someone to blame for last year's defensive issues.

so rex fires the best coach he took along with him from the jets???

too bad we don't have room on the staff to add him. mike cladwell already has the assistant head coach title and pepper johnson is a solid d-line coach.

dunbar is a good man and a good coach. he'll find work elsewhere soon

I don't take many ops to beat up on Rex, but this makes no sense. Dunbar is a very good DL coach. I have to assume there is some kind of conflict between Rob and Dunbar.

IMO not a smart move by Rex. if the jets could find room for him I'd take him back quickly.

I agree. He was great hear on the Jets and was instrumental developing our young players. If we can bring him back, I would do it in a heart beat.

Karl Dunbar “completely surprised and disappointed” by termination

Karl Dunbar “completely surprised and disappointed” by termination

On Sunday, the Bills suddenly parted ways with defensive line coach Karl Dunbar. The formal announcement shed no light on why he was “relieved of his duties.”

On Monday, Dunbar issued a statement regarding the move. The statement also sheds no light on the situation.

“While I am completely surprised and disappointed in being relieved of my duties by the Buffalo Bills, I would like to thank the Bills organization, Terry and Kim Pegula, Coach Ryan, the other Bills coaches, all of the Bills players and all of the staff in Buffalo,” Dunbar said. “I am especially grateful to the numerous players and coaches who reached out and shared their support of me. I wish them success in the future as I seek my next coaching opportunity.”

There has to be more to the story; coaches don’t simply get run out the door in the middle of March. If it’s going to happen, it happens not long after the season ends.

This seems like a mistake to me. It seems like he's the fall guy for the lack of production, or something else is going on behind the scenes that we don't know about yet. I'm thankful Rex never tried to bring his brother aboard the Jets staff.

Fall guys don't get fired in March. This was a very unprofessional move. Dunbar was very loyal and talented, why fire him now?

Coughlin was a fall guy. Then Reese, that a hole filled the team with the talent he failed on with Tom.

The Bills have hired John Blake to replace Karl Dunbar, fired Sunday, as their defensive line coach. Blake, who was hired last month at Lamar University, resigned from North Carolina amid an NCAA investigation into his financial relationship with then-NFL agent Gary Wichard. "He endured a difficult time in his coaching career a few years back, but has moved forward with his life and put that behind him," Rex Ryan said of Blake in a statement. "Since that time he has worked with a number of NFL players and earned their respect with his ability to hone their skills and techniques." Ryan coached under Blake at Oklahoma in 1998.
