When Rex Ryan took over the Jets in 2009, he came armed with a new motto: "Play like a Jet."
What, exactly, did that mean?
“It’s going to mean that we care about each [other],” Ryan said in 2009, per the New York Post. “It’s going to mean that we’re going to give everything we’ve got, and they’re not doing it for selfish reasons. They’re doing it to take care of each other. When you play us you’re playing against a football team and not a bunch of individuals.”
It seemed like the perfect rallying cry when New York appeared in back-to-back AFC Championship Games in 2009 and 2010. Then everything went downhill, bottoming out with a 4-12 record in 2014 that led to Ryan's firing.
The new staff has apparently washed the walls of the "Play like a Jet" slogan and replaced it with the simple if less creative "Teamwork," according to the New York Post's Brian Costello.
This is yet another mark of the new Jets regime. The franchise replaced Ryan with first-time head coach Todd Bowles and fired general manager John Idzik in favor of Mike Maccagnan. They want to put their own label on the organization, and that can include something as literal as a motto painted on a wall.
